Lol, russell coight on the FB page..

"Russell Coight : The best AFL game made for consoles to date is this one. It has bugs here and there., the marking system is frustrating etc etc. BUT the core of the game is solid and enjoyable. Good stuff, considering this is done without the budget of a EA or 2k Sports budget."
Dude this game is terrible.

Jealous of the youtube clips, might have to get it on ps4 so I can make clips too :D. Will likely just use a capture program when the pc version comes out.

In the finals, QF against Adelaide. Finished on top a few games clear of second (64 points).Belted the Bulldogs by 47 points (they finished 15th.. lol), that said I lost to Carlton the round before.

Posted this in the bug fix thread but I thought I'd post it here too, just to get more people's opinion on my idea to fix marking:

I think there's a really simple solution for marking: Make the circles turn green when you're supposed to hit Y. How does that sound to everyone? A nice, clear visual aid.

Other fixes:

Free kicks. You always get pinged for HTB/throw, the AI rarely does. This feels like a cheap way to increase difficulty but it just makes it frustrating.
The advantage rule. It's completely broken. If it's too hard to implement properly, drop it entirely.
The dinky little marks that get paid to the AI when the ball clearly hasn't travelled 15m.

I think these issues cause the most frustration for me. Fix them (and the silly little ones like Gov Jnr being 32 etc) and this game will be great. And from what I can see, they should be rather simple fixes. Even if one of them might be ditching the advantage rule completely.

I am enjoying the game. A few things that need to be looked at for me are:

AI goal kicking is very poor,
Either it's me or the game but marking needs to be looked at,
Holding the ball is never paid for me but I am regularly penalised for a throw,
Players names: Roughy gets called Rioli / Rioli gets called poppy...not good.

But I am enjoying the challenge and there has been some positives. Just enjoying having a AFL game on my ps4 pro and my 4k tv...looks great!

I've played it for the past few days but sorry to say I've just returned it. For the price it is not worth it. Marking has completely ruined the game. Probably would of been ok if it wasn't for that. Play on medium and you get beaten every time in a marking contest. Should of just kept the same marking as previous versions. If they fix it down the track then I'll consider getting it but right now it's has horrible controls and not worth $79.

Started a new competition on hard, played a belter of a round 1 match against GWS. Uploaded the last 2 quarters if anyone wants to watch. I find 10 minute quarters to be best to play on really get a feel for the flows and waves of momentum shifting throughout the match.

is wind really the only way to miss a set shot? seems too easy, kicking stats should affect it i reckon

I've missed some easy shots by misjudging the wind and over compensating the angle. And have also fluffed up many shots at goal by either doing the power meter too soft, or trying to get it bang on and OVER powering it instead.

Each to their own but if you've given this game away because of the marking then that seems a bit ridiculous

I started to get the hang of marking in my second match and now I love the marking/spoiling system in the game, it feels realistic and challenging as it should (and feels great when the tall forwards and defenders are all in a contest for the mark and you send your small forward flying in front of the pack to mark it)

I love the diving mark animation........... when you're marking the ball on your own with no other player in sight :D.

I went back over some of the Live 1
Threads this morning just to remind myself of the gripes people had with that seeing as its seen quite favourably by most. Had a memory marking was a big gripe in that too.
Sure was.
There were threads dedicated to it and easily one of the biggest early gripes. That, jostling/bumping and spoiling.
People saying it's impossible aren't doing it right. I've got it worked out, quite a few here have and several YouTube/twitch streams show people doing it fine.

So I agree IF people are returning it solely on the marking then it is silly.
Having said all that, the marking system is still counterintuitive and could be so much easier and explained better.

I have played it but not to any great extent since I bought it on Friday. There are lots of little flaws that detract from my enjoyment of the game. It is best played as a local multiplayer game so each player is similarly disadvantaged.

I get the feeling I paid $79 for an advance beta. Lots of things that could do with fixing. If they are fixed then that's great. If they are not I will feel slightly ripped off.

Does anyone else have a problem with the interchange not working at all?
I have it set on full auto and there's literally not one change in a game unless there's an injury ?

Yep. Same issue for me. I made it 10 minute quarters to try to get interchanges happening but they only happen if I pause the game and make them manually.

I can confirm, once you figure out marking the game opens up so much more. My tip is you have to begin holding triangle as soon as the ball is in the air from a kick, then release as the two circles meet up. What I think people don't like is the fact that even if you do time it well, you're not guaranteed to mark it - this depends on your positioning, the attributes of your opponent etc. I personally enjoy the fact that marking the ball isn't a given.

Marking advice that has worked for me very, very consistently. Haven't lost an online game for atleast about 15-20 games now.

First, in the camera options change the marking to 'look at ball' I find that is much easier to follow in terms of the timing with the circles.

Second, and you have to trust this will work because visually it really shouldnt. When the ball is in the air hold triangle and always release when the bigger transparent circle constricts to become the solid white circle. If you release it at that point, even when the ball still has some ways to drop towards you, you will mark the ball 90% of the time. The 10% will only be either you being horribly out of position or your opponent has timed it just that bit better.

The above is actually the same advice in the manual actually. And it does work, try it.

Got beaten twice in a row last night vs Collingwood on Medium. Got quite frustrated. But I tried your advice this morning and what a difference it made! I'm still not perfect by any means, but I took 14 marks against Freo on Medium, including at least 8 contested (to complete one of the match objectives. I completed all three to earn the Achievement). Before I'd only be able to take 4-6 marks per game

Beat them too thanks to a third quarter burst. And their inaccuracy.

So thanks for the advice!

Im going to edit a couple of teams centre square mids on a speed scale of 50 to reduce that ping pong feeling in the middle. So fast mids will be 40+ and the Ziebell types will be 25. Ideally there would be a global slider effecting player speed. Ill post video results later tonight.

Im also going to test to see what the difference between speed/acceleration/agility is to see if their is a solution to the players' weightless feel and ability to turn on a dime.

And the lock on to a target is a game changer.

Yep, agreed. I seriously wish people would give the game a bit of a crack. I completely agree with a lot of the problems people are bringing up, but I think people shitting on the game because "the marking is impossible" is entirely unfair. AFL Live 1's marking is completely impossible - certainly more difficult than Evolution's - but people seem to herald it as the best AFL game of all time. I was one of those people, until now. I think Evolution, when played well and with a bit of a footy brain, is the best representation of the sport in video game format.
