AFL LIVE PASS - WHAT A JOKE!

Just have to vent this....

Went onto AFL website to get an AFL live pass. They have a free 4 week trial on for the NAB cup at the moment.

So I go through the steps, email confirmation, all good.

Then I have to put my credit card details in so that they can charge after the trial period - fine. Key in the numbers on 6 occasions and every time it comes out with a timed out error.

That is not what I am angry about. What really pissed me off is the 3 people in 3 different countries I spoke to in an attempt to resolve this.

Firstly I contacted the support that was listed on the AFL confirmation email. That sounded like India and the woman had no idea what I was talking about.

Step 2 - she transfers me to someone that can help me. This time it's an American, but I suspect it was in Singapore. She also had no idea but was adamant she would transfer me to someone that could help.

Next thing I get Trent from AFL membership. He's surprised to be receiving my call and says he can't help. He must have been on his way to the pub because he was super keen to try and transfer me to reception even after I told what a joke this was.

What a shambles that is, I don't think I'll bother with the Live pass - I've heard the reception is often crap anyway.

Valid rant complete.

I got a digital membership through the Cats for mine, worked out much easier.

Rupert wouldn't. Will never happen.
Why should he? So he can lose billions of dollars? What a stupid business move that would be.

Talk about some blind hate.

So, Apple TV. What's it all about and how does it work in laymans terms? I've searched their site and it's one big ad.

I have the AFL international pass with apps on my iPhone and iPad. Last season I was connecting one of the MacBooks to the tv to watch live. Now for some reason the tv won't be detected by either mac( one is 2012 the other 2015), so trying to work out how I can get it on tv for this season.

Apple to HDMI connector ... depending on which device you have, make sure you get the right one. Should be around $50.

Just pumps whatever is playing on your device to your TV. Works well enough for AFL telecasts through the AFL Live app.

My 10 dollar mini display to hdmi cable used to work fine, but seems like an update has meant they generic ones can't be used anymore.

But thanks

Apple TV v3 is about $90. The new Apple TV v4 is over $200...but I believe the AFL has crippled things so that you cannot Airplay to Apple TV anyway.

Off topic Apple TV is great...I use it for Netflix, Stan, Youtube and other stuff.

I wonder if that applies to the INTL subscription, as Foxtel is a non issue with us.

Using mirroring on Apple TV worked last season.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but I've got the international stream via a VPN running on my Intel nuc into my TV. Used it last year and the 720p stream worked well.
The previous year I had foxtel play (foxtel isn't wired in my building) and the stream quality was absolutely pathetic and buffered frequently on my 100/40 connection

The international stream quality was garbage at the start of last year. Either appallingly low resolution, or higher res but with jerky motion due to them being too stupid to convert one video format to another properly. Did this improve as the year went on?

Picked up a 1 year free subscription in an offer for Telstra mobile customers under this deal. Will see me until Julyish.

if you keep an eye out there are always free passes. I use a samsung tab s tablet and the quality is excellent and I can screen mirror wirelessly (quality doesnt look as crash hot on a big screen tv but serviceable) Interesting comments re: apple devices. I dont think its the AFL crippling its app, I'd say its Foxtel pushing Telstra to block it so people dont cancel their fox footy subscriptions.
