AFL LIVE PASS - WHAT A JOKE!

Well if the Nrl app is anything to go by, I've just hooked my iPad up to the telly with a lightning to hdmi adapter and all I'm getting is audio. Not looking good.
That sounds concerning... Does everything else mirror correctly (ie just that app)?

I used to have that for the AFL pass in 2012 and it went to black as you said in 2013. Streaming it to the Apple TV/Chromecast is the only way to get around the block.

The lightning to hdmi cable adapter has always worked for the AFL live pass for me. It's what I am relying on again this year so hope it hasn't been blocked!

Really dont understand why the afl live pass cannot simply be copied to the model of nba leaguepass and nfl gamepass. I have both and they a far, far superior service

The NFL and NBA passes aren't available in the local markets though as it interferes with the FTA/cable broadcasts.

If you are only buying the Live Pass on the expectation that you can throw it up on your TV you're setting yourself up for potential disappointment. While it may work, the general principle in the broadcast deal is that if you want to watch on TV you should have Fox or free to air. As a result, be prepared to watch it on Ipad/Tablet/Phone if they do update it to restrict mirroring.

Jailbreak the IOS device.

And to that, the Dodgers IN LA can't be watched either. Same for the Lakers. Both have signed BILLION dollar TV deals with TWC - Time Warner Cable - and TWC is not on selling the rights to other cable providers at an agreeable price. The result, millions of Dodger and LAker fans in THEIR HOME TOWM MARKET can't watch them at all.

There are a select number of games that ESPN carries and they are viewed but that is it.

All im saying is that whilst I myself am no great supporter of the AFL and its BS moves at times, it could be much worse.

And yes, blocking the AFL Liv pass is crap. If you pay, you should get to watch it however you want.

Incorrect. I streamed most of the 2015 season to my TV from an Android phone using an appropriate phone to HDMI cable and the domestic AFL app. No need for Chromecast or Apple TV.

As far as I know, on Android app developers can block mirroring (on non-rooted devices) but they can't block physical video output via USB/MHL/HDMI. Nor should they be able to.

Another alternative for the truly keen would be to set up a PC with an Android emulator on it, then install the AFL app on that, then hook that up to the TV.

Or of course, you can get the international pass and use a VPN or an IP blocking service. The issue with the international pass is that the video quality has problems (specifically, problems with some sort of awful transcoding of the video between two different frame rates, resulting in a nasty juddering effect which makes it borderline unwatchable on a big screen).

I am convinced that the main strategy employed by the AFL in relation to streaming is to keep the video quality shite compared to FTA and especially Fox HD.

Maybe not, but the US does at least have some competition for pay TV which affects pricing. A major problem here is that there is literally zero competition, so Foxtel charges uncompetitive prices - this is borne out by the innumerable stories of people beating them down by 50% or more by threatening to cancel, which gives an indication of what the true price point should be in a competitive market. At least they have dropped somewhat in recent times.

I used the AFL Live Pass all throughout 2015 with a lightning bolt cable from my iPhone to my TV. Worked a charm! Do recommend, unless they've blocked it... Will test out during NAB.

I did this last year on ADSL2 and the quality was decent enough. Just about to get NBN in March so unless the AFL somehow prevents mirroring I'll be doing the same again.

In 2013 when I last used HDMI to iPad, the AFL app went to black and showed only audio. Every other app worked fine. So it had to have been the AFL blocking it through their app.

In 2015 it 100% worked, I have heard that it used to block but not last year. Hopefully not in 2016, I've already got it so I'll test it in the NAB cup and report back

This was what I tried last year during the NAB Cup free trial period and the jittering/ghosting drove me mad. For a dedicated footy fan who will watch multiple games each week it would drive me nuts - however I assumed this would still be better quality than hooking up the ipad to the TV via hdmi as the picture quality for the ipad is designed for the smaller screen and blowing it up to a HDTV would make it look near unwatchable. Is this the case? Have you tried both and which one do you think provides the better picture on a big screen?

Just to clarify my earlier post. Vysor is a Beta Chrome app, that allows you to mirror whatever is on your android phone onto a computer screen, via your usb charging cable. So far, I've found that it DOES indeed bring up the AFL apps matches (including AFL.TV, which is usually blocked for this kind of thing). The only problem is that it's laggy, and is about 10 seconds off - and since it only does the VIDEO, not the AUDIO, that creates issues for watching.

Still very promising. It's only in Beta at the moment, so once it goes full version, it may have the lag problems rectified.

For $300 a year you can watch every AFL game on Foxtel and on your apple/android device plus all the pre match and post match analysis and AFL 360.

1. It's $360 for 6 months if you want HD

2. Per year it's minimum $450 including the 6 months where you drop down to the basic package

3. Cancelling/resubscribing may incur additional connection/IQ fees etc

4. Some people don't want to line Murdoch's pockets

5. This is a thread about the AFL Live app so obviously people are looking at alternatives to Foxtel

Sure, it's only $300... except you have to buy a ton of extras that I don't need, and don't want. If I want a thousand channels that don't matter, then I'll buy Foxtel. But I just want to watch footy. Thanks.

1. No. Well I manage to get it for free through negotiation.

2. No. You can cancel/suspend your Foxtel and keep the box for 3 months paying only $10 a month during that time and $25 per month for the additional 3 months. So its about ~$400 if you are savvy and on a budget.

3. Canceling no.

4. Couldnt really care, I just want to watch AFL in HD.

5. True, but I think the Fox Footy package has a lot to offer with additional worthwhile footy shows.

There are other modalities to paying to watch AFL. One of which is going to a pub. There are others....;)
