AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

That's when you respond with 'yeah similar to the NFL, a domestic sport that is the biggest sport in the country'.
Funnily enough the soccer numpties in the U.S are the same, whingeing about the NFL saying it should be called 'hand egg' and it isn't international.

Calling American Football "handegg" is totally disrespectful.
Amercan Football is played around the world and at a reasonable level in the American diaspora.
American Football has many more registered players than registered rugby players around the world.
American's couldn't care less though, a section of Australian's seem to really suffer with having to be internationally relevant,

That's the difference.

typically people that have barely ever been outside of Australia themselves I've noticed.

Yeah, on reflection, then I'd go with that.

So, thought this was interesting.....the google trends indicator of interest in tonight's finals has the AFL final peaking at 20% higher than the NRL in Queensland (no Queensland team in either match)

4 of the top 5 cities are known for having a significant portion of Aussie rules supporters - Gold Coast, Sunny Coast, Cairns and Port Douglas - and the ratios prove that with more interest in the AFL than the NRL in those cities. Brisbane sits in 6th position on that list but the ratio is in the NRL's favour in the state capital.

Yep, Brisbane 53 - 47 in favour of the NRL tonight

Put in any longer period and NRL is consistently two to three times higher.

For the last 7 days its 22 to 12. So less than 2 times higher

....but the point is, Australian football is now a significant second football code in Queensland and a serious strategic competitor to the NRL

meanwhile, the Melbourne TV ratings for the Storm final will be less than the Sydney audience for tonight's AFL final

All we need now is for ch7 to stop treating the game like a second class citizen in the northern states. It's actually disgraceful the afl let them shove big finals off to the secondary channel.

Not bad considering the NRL also has twice as many teams in Queensland.

It just doesn’t rate if a non NSW/QLD team is playing. Bris vs Power was on the main channel? That’s more than fair since most Australian football fans in QLD will naturally be more interested in the Brisbane based team.

Edit - It looks like tonight’s game is on the main channel in QLD. There is no NRL match tonight.

It doesn't stop channel 9 putting every nrl final on the main channel into the southern states, despite them rating even lower and there only being 1 team in their competition across all 4 states. This of course is compared to 4 afl teams in NSW and QLD.

Need a clause with this in the next AFL tv rights agreement. Channel 10 were great back in the day showing the AFL live in the main channels in the northern state. Circa 2000s. That was great for the game.

To be fair, this might be related to the the extra contra from channel 9 in the current NRL deal. The cash component went backwards in real terms but the contra double in $s

Lions Prelim is at 5.15pm next Saturday. The last 5 or so minute will overlap with the Broncos game down the road. Why wouldn’t you start it a little earlier. Even 5pm.

People aren't going to watch it because of the last 5 minute overlap? More likely they'll hold off on flicking over to the NRL if the AFL is close

7.50pm start for the Broncos. It'll be close but should be done unless theres a goal kicking feast and quarters blow out past 30m

The AFL is a long way off overtaking the NRL in Queensland. They are arguably ahead of the NRL in some Queensland markets.

Queensland is the most decentralised population in Australia and every major regional town provides a pathway to the NRL via the Queensland Cup.

While Aussie Rules only gives you a clear talent pathway in the south east corner.
