mcgrath - gone 4 weeks

maguire - gone 2-4 weeks

Have to play Merrett now if he makes it through training. We have no one else on the list really capable of doing a job on Hall.

If Merrett doesn't come up, I'd almost be inclined to play Mitch Clark or Patfull on him, and that's giving away a whole lot of strength amongst other things.

Fingers crossed the waterboy runs Hall over in his buggy this week, and Hall misses one week with a bruised toe.

Must say im worried about this game. With higgins and grant missing aswell now it's not going to help our cause. We really need to keep fev goalless for aslong as possible because whenever he kicks one against us he seems to kick a bag within minutes.

No need to be worried about this one as we have no backline whatsoever (No Merret, Maguire, Drummo, Adcock or Mcgrath) and no-one even close to being able to match it with big bad bustling....

Only way were going to do it is if we smash you guys in the midfield, and that would be extremely unlikely given that we're too slow and usually dont start playing until quarter time...

saw on the news tonight that Merret has got the OK to play against the bullies:thumbsu:

B Hawksley Merrett Staker
HB Raines Patfull Johnstone
C Rockliff Black Brennan
HF Acorn Brown Sherman
F Buchanan Fev Banfield

R Clark Rich Rischa

I/C Leuey Power Harwood Redden

Merrett is likely a little unfit- uber important Clark floats back (operation human shield :(). This backline is not our A grade but neither is it a complete embarrassment. There are still 3 'tall' defenders, so Patfull as a tagger for Cooney is still an option. Alternatively Rischa has performed adequately in this role in the past, and needs must when Fortune vomits on your eiderdown.
Harwood impressed in the preseason, and Chopperduck's suggestion in Roster Watch that we move Power back and bring him in is not without merit.
It's a shame Broc is injured, as a mid season elevation and moving Clark to CHB would be a half decent option.

All up out:- McGrath, Collier, Maguire, Sheldon
Ins- Harwood, Acorn, Merrett, Raines.

Voss tends to prefer minimal ins/outs and would rather positional changes, so this many unforced changes is unlikely. Injuries notwithstanding, 1 win from 7 may be enough reason to mix things up a little, and give some of the younger guys a crack.

So it is possible to downgrade a charge. Somewhere Matt Maguire just ran over a cat.

I'm kinda glad the kid gets to play, but I'm completely fed up with the MRP lottery. Goose has got to feel hard done by.

I don't think Sheldon can make it at AFL level and Collier looks like he will never be a good kick...but I would rather they stay in the team because they were both put in the team because someone thinks they can make it at that level.

In: Merrett, Raines
Out: Mcgrath, Maguire

Tipping the lions this year reminds me of trying to tip Freo games last year.

Our backline is struggling for kickouts and will struggle for match ups until we have Maguire and Mcgrath back. If we have Redden and Patfull playing like they did last week then our defenders will be worked over the whole game and there will be people calling for more players to be culled at the end of the year.

I can't imagine the midfielders would be so confident getting the ball and kicking it to Brown and Fev when they just about have to do a 3 point turn to change direction.

Pleaseeeeeeeeee be the week that they are close enough to 100%. Last game against the Dogs, Lake could hardly run after Brown in the 4th quarter.

If Team B turns up, ie the team that played last Saturday night, then we wouldn't beat the Tigers, let alone the Dogs.

However, if Team A turns up, ie the lot that played Collingwood, then there's no reason we can't give the Dogs a real test.

Re all the comment about Staker- I'm prepared to say that he has played much better down back than I at least expected. I actually had thought he was a bit gun shy, but now I don't think that this is the case. He just looks that way.

However, noone can honestly say he inspires confidence with the ball in hand- he is forever looking this way and that, and immediately turns left and/or right rather than focus on the straight ahead. I don't know where this kicking around the corner stuff came from, but maybe the coaches need to put the blinkers on. If only Staker could somehow learn to take on the opposition, he would be greatly more valuable, as he seems to get his hands on the pill ok.

And on the going to ground stuff, as I suggested several weeks ago, fine the bugger $100 for every avoidable instance and that might bring about a change in procedure.

I know there has been a lot of Staker love the last couple of weeks and I have kept quiet but I think a few things need to be said:

1. First the good. He has gotten quite a lot of the ball and has worked harder than he has done for most of his career.

however

2. When he gets the ball though he is on the same level as Merrett. He has no ability to read the play and his option taking is terrible.

3. His first half against Collingwood was terrible. He was a liability defensively and with the ball in hand and it was only because of a lack of options that he remained where he was. Admittedly his second half was pretty damn good especially defensively.

4. Staker had no idea what he was doing defensively on the weekend and was out of position time and again. The Lions only started to go in the right direction when he was moved out of defence and put at the other end of the field. I am surprised more didn't notice this.

So yes he has looked better and seems to be working hard (certainly harder than most of his teammates) but there are still major issues with his game and I am far from confident with him playing a key role on the weekend especially on Hall.

Short of discovering a genie there is no option to playing Staker in defence this week - actually Brennan or Clark could be used as CHB but won't be.

Merrett,Patfull and Staker on paper doesn't look too bad as a tall defender trio and players can fire first up from injury.

Unfortunately as one of the six remaining away games I have this as one we will not win.

I have noticed that every time Staker gets the ball he looks sideways and backwards for a chip pass. It is annoying. I think someone has told him to lay it off to allow others with better disposal to kick it forward.

The problem is if you do that you need to do it very quickly (which hasn't been the case), and sometimes you just need to back yourself and look / kick it forward.

From all reports I have seen, Merrett shouldnt be available until round 13?
Do you guys think that Voss will risk him? Seeing as he is a very important player for you guys defensively, I dont know if it would be worth it.

I'm curious to know what reports you've seen.

Everything I've read had him back in 2-3 weeks....3 weeks ago...

Voss had this to say about him this week:

“Daniel Merrett will potentially come back this week. He’s been ‘up and going’ this past week and has made some good progression. He did a little bit of training last week.”

“It was always really important for him to have a full week of training last week to be a realistic chance. That means he should get pretty much two full weeks of training under his belt which should give him a pretty good chance to come up.”

“But he’s got to get through the whole week before we can be categorical about that.”

On a couple of internet injury sites, as well as local news, it said that he suffered a recurrence in his rehab from his strain? If that is wrong im happy to withdraw what i said, as you guys will most definately know more than me :D Is he 100%? Or going to be playing with a bit of soreness?

He originally tweaked the hammy against Melbourne (Apr 24) and was considered out for just a week or two, but then he tweaked it again @ training for his return around May 12 prior to the Freo game and has been out for the month since. Given the history of it I imagine they're taking a cautious approach, but it is sounding promising for this week.

It's interesting reading the Bulldogs board and seeing many of the same complaints about their forward line injury woes as we have in our back line.
This may even out the contest somewhat.

This leads to the question- would you rather have your forwards or your backs filled with 'second tier' players?
