Ah right.. he'll go then.

While I agree on Sandi, we should pick a second ruckman each and every week, and it has nothing to do with Sandilands. Ottens should not ruck alone, so if you're going to drop Hawkins, which is warranted, you must bring in a ruckman, and in any case we shouldn't use hawkins in that possie we should use a ruckman. This has nothing to do with anything Sandi does or doesn't do. As jester says, we have 5 ruckmen on the list, bloody well play 2.

Blake is a no go, it's either or with him and Ottens and Ottens played well. One of West/Simpson/Vardy is the only option with the new rule.

I think it's one of Otto,Simpson or Blake and one of West or my boy:DVardy,I've claimed him, photo comes up great as a desk top. He'd be on the plane if I had my way.

I think we'll make the following changes for this week:

In: Chapman Ling Brown West
Out: Selwood (rested) Scarlett (suspended - I don't think he should be but we know how the media like to highlight incidents involving Geelong players to such an extent the MRP has no option but to suspend them), Menzel, Hawkins (omitted)

Which leaves the team to look like this:

B: J.Hunt Lonergan Wojcinski
HB: Enright Taylor Mackie
C: Varcoe Corey Chapman
HF: Duncan West Brown
F: Johnson Mooney Stokes
Foll: Ottens Bartel Kelly
Int: Ling Guthrie T.Hunt
Sub: Milburn

Not sure it will happen but I agree completely. Only change would be pods if fit for brown.

I think we will play a much better game than last week.

The good news is that I dont think we can play much worse than we did...no run, poor skills and decisions etc....

Granted... the Saints are a top 4 team that enjoy the python-esq strangle of their opponent... which they did....

Here's hoping the delivery to the forwards gets better, Lingy and Chappy make their return.... Scarlo doesnt get rubbed, Selwood passes his tests by wednesday.... and Tomahawk can get his hands free to mark the pill out in front of him in a few one on ones instead of 3 on one....

And I think that Sandi will need a big conditioned body against him ALL game and I think Otto and Blake may be the best option.... ( let the stoning begin..LOL)

Dont know that Vardy, West, Simpson will match up well....

Simpson has size but is he fit enough?...

(LA isnt the best place to get too much vision of the magoos!)

GO Catters

Team selections will be very telling indeed and I expect a few surprises.

Scott knows our weaknesses that the dockers have exploited in our past couple of games at subi.

No Ablett and probably no Selwood, the two players that have dragged us back into the game against them over there recently.

Not sure who the tag will go to. Pav and Hill are dangermen but Mundy is the best match up for Ling.

What I would like to do is not concede 35 scoring shots as we did against Fremantle last year. Yes it was a free flowing game but it was the first time in a very long time we did that. Not acceptable really.

I think you'll find Sandilands absolutely took Dawson to the cleaners and he was dropped the following week. There's no disgrace in that as the man mountain was arguably the best ruckman going around last year. Just having the height is by no means enough.

I certainly agree we need a back-up ruckman over there. I'm not sure who is best suited to that role though. Maybe if they decide to go with Pods they'll persevere with Hawkins in that role.

From memory I thought Simpson was ok last year on debut. Does that mean we never play any young ruckman any Sandilands because he's so big and powerful and everything?

Nonsense. Simpson needs more games, not less, and he might as well measure himself against top quality opposition. What will be extremely important is that he covers the ground well. How about we play a ruckman who has the mobility to exploit Sandilands, rather than being in total fear of him?

Correct. And it's been totally forgotten that we were 20 points up late in the third quarter also. That was a really, really bad loss.

I think this might be a wise game to leave Ling out.

Chapman for Selwood only?

As much as we need Dawson to get game time we need to see if Ottens is not quite fit enough yet or just old.
Only game time will prove that.

Is Byrnes fit? Would be a good inclusion at Subi. Has a good record in recent games there.

Last week Scott seemed to suggest Byrnes was further back than Pods-at least this was what I interpreted from him saying Byrnes had a tricky injury that was sometimes at the back of his leg and sometimes at the front.

Would be a good inclusion but I don't want to take too many underdone players in anyway on the big ground.

Bynres won't be back for sometime and will do so through VFL. Although a fit and firing Byrnes would be handy admittedly.

Still no idea about the ruck, but you just have to back Otto' in, he needs games under his belt, and although he does lumber, he is actually quite good at covering ground.

Scarlett definitely out, and Selwood very unlikely. Easy - Chapman and Ling both in....Play Milburn as a back pocket, Lonergan as Full Back and Taylor at CHB. Chapman and Ling straight into midfield along with Trav, Duncan, Menzel and keep the very dangerous Taylor Hunt and Wojack as both half back and half forward attacking options - they are absolute keys at Subi!

I wouldn't be upset to see Brown get a guernsey....however, trying to reduce changes is paramount. Not many teams win with 4/5 changes from week to week.

Dawson was dropped the following week. No disgrace in being cleaned-up by the big unit.

There are two ways of looking at playing a rookie ruckman against a much superior ruckman. One is he gains valuable experience from it. The other is it knocks his confidence and sets him back. It all depends on Dawson's make-up and only the inner circle know that.

Sandilands is reasonably agile for a big unit. But he's slow. So anyone of those mentioned - Hawkins, West, Simpson, Vardy - could take advantage of that.

Thing is Sandilands has footy smarts and knows where to run to put himself in dangerous spots so manning-up on him will be the primary instruction given to his opponents I'd guess.

Ottens, Mooney and Milburn are at the end and are really only depth players.

Even though Ottens is our No1 ruck he should probably only play around 15 out of 22 games.

Dawson will need to replace him next year so giving him a few games throughout the season is very important.

Let him and West have a crack at Sandilands and have a go playing forward against freos undermanned backline.

Dont see why Ottens and Mooney would play, just seems silly to make older guys travel all that way to play in the heat on a big ground.

Also wouldn't worry about making a large amount of changes, especially when you are bringing back 200 game players.

Why all this crap about Vardy as if he's a proven senior ruckman or whatever, this extreme optomizing about a totally inexperienced youngster is nonsense.
If and when he gets a game it'd be at Skilled as a tall forward and probably off the bench after the first quarter.
Same with Brown. These two are very valuable assets.
I'd prefer them both to play VFL for the first 3-5 games before we roll the dice with either of them, let them proove themselves with consistent good form.
Dawson, Blake or West are a different proposition, each are genuine rucks with experience enough to play Freo.

Re: Just 2 changes this week?

Pods should play. Doesn't matter who he replaces.

Spoken for and on behalf of P.O. :D

Good call!

Nah seriously, despite our forward line woes, he should only play if he's medically and otherwise fit, and he should only replace someone who deserves to be replaced on form, which based on friday is Hawkins and to a lesser extent Mooney.

Just because I love JPOD in the side doesn't mean I want someone to go that doesn't deserve to go.

It's shaping very much like Selwood and Scarlett for Chappy and Ling. The difficult calls may be delayed by a week.

That said, I will throw a cat among the pigeons and say Blake might come into calculations this week against Sandi. :D

Ottens will have a problem running out the game - no doubt about that. I would have Hawkins as the sub - half a lesson in where he will be if he doesn't man up. Quite a few of Stokes chances were from Mooney kicking to him when he may have had other options. I think stokes goes and Scarlett (of course) is out (that's another story - he needs to curb his mongrel). We keep the youthful legs that worked well (Menzel/Hunt/Guthrie).
