Just finished watching Geelong v Collingwood…have now watched each of the finals.

It’s dispiriting tbh….don’t even know where to start. We need leadership, endurance runners, power around the ball….you name it, we need it.

I’m tempted to say out first priority should be a captain. Zac ‘ain’t the guy and we don’t even have a Harley/Maxell type to call on.

The midfield is the other obvious starting point - we are so undersized and so lacking running power compared to these teams. I would be open to trading whomever of Shiel, Parish or Merrett gets us the best haul.

I don’t think we would have been vaguely competitive in any of those games other than Brisbane/Richmond which was a level below the others in terms of pressure/physical intensity.
Dispiriting is about right.

Pick a game this weekend we'd have been in for more than a qtr.
Reckon even q1 freo takes a lead against us.

I dont see the same will and want to win in many of our guys that i saw in rich, bris, coll, geel and syd. Willingness to do 4 qtrs of hard stuff to keep the chance alive.

We need to find some experienced players to show our young blokes what that actually looks like.

I actually think Parish, Heppell and Merrett think they do it and try to do it…..but they don’t. Not at the level you see elsewhere.

We need a coach with the credibility to push back on senior players and some experienced pros to actually show the kids what real AFL footy is about. If we don’t do it then another generation of young kids will waste their AFL careers at a club that thinks it’s in the race but is actually being lapped by the front runners.

Been thinking about those types who seemingly exist on an AFL list and one wonders why, value leaders.

Looking at guys like Adam Kennedy (GWS), Liam Shiels (Haw - Retired) types.

Flanders was very impressive in the VFL today, absolutely everywhere. He’s not massive but we need the consistent spread as much as we need the size, I reckon that’s worth a look.

Harry Cunningham as well is the complete opposite of sexy and high profile but again, run, spread, neat ball use. We need all of it. He could be a good stop gap until we find a stronger option on a wing.

Flanders has pretty poor disposal.

I did see one article linking us to Dunkley today, can't remember the source - though Port are the front runners with a reported offer of 650k pa. I've no doubt we could surpass that but then its a question of his worth and if he would actually come. Plus we've been linked with McKay, Mitchell, De Goey etc so I wouldn't take anything as gospel.

I don't think we'd have as hard a time attracting players as some would think. Yes we are the most unsettled club in the league at present but Carlton, Collingwood and earlier Brisbane and the Dogs all went through periods of major late season upheaval and were able to bounce back reasonably well, particularly Collingwood and the Dogs.

There certainly may be some hesitancy from prospective targets at present but that will settle once we have appointed a new coach and CEO. Hopefully that will be prior to commencement of the trade period but we've left it a bit late. I don't think any player would be too worried about what is happening at board level.

Even if we can't attract any decent players this year, there is still a lot of optimism - in 12 months time we will have settled into the regime of a new coach and CEO (Both without any links to the 'saga' unless we foolishly appoint Hird), will have blooded Davey and at least one other elite draftee, have had 22 more games into our youth and will still have a ton of cash to play with.

I mean he’s nothing special obviously. And losing out on clarkson hearing after the fact was the just a pure Uncalculated arrogant attempt of thinking Essendon can get who they want.
But if blokes like this are choosing norfffff over us we’re cooked

De Goey is not worth the headache. As for the other stars mentioned, we're in rebuild mode and should hold off spending until we've established a solid core. I think our future is looking good with the likes of:

Archie, Hobbs (future captain), Jones, Martin, Draper, Durham

Bring in some vets (actual champions) to show them the ropes, like Brisbane did with Hodge.

Eventually look to convert the likes of Merrett and Parish into first rounders. Both are great players but victims of poor club culture and we're not winning anything with them.

Well what would you expect right now ? North have the gun coach that is attractive to players and we do not have a coach.

It's also easy for players to see how that team achieves success in the coming years. With LDU, McKay, Larkey, Dawson, JHF, Simpkin, Taylor, Powell, Curtis, Young, Thomas, Zurhaar; you can see the bones of a really good team when in their prime. Great leadership with Cunnington and Goldstein.

With us I couldn't tell you if half our senior players will be there in 3 years let alone see a window of success on the other side. We have no notion of whether Cox and Reid become capable KPP, there is no contested midfielder like LDU or potential star like JHF/Thomas to spark that excitement around. We might be better than them for another year or two but they could easily shoot past us in a blink of an eye if they get a few decisions right. They have a far better grounding in contested ball and just need to add the class.

First time I’ve seen us linked to him… so I searched and found this:

It sounds like we asked his manager about it as did a few other clubs. He is originally from Victoria and has been separated from family due to border restrictions, such that he nearly requested a trade last year. Doesn’t seem like a really serious pursuit? Did we even meet with him personally let alone make an offer at all?

And as ant said it’s not like we have much to offer football wise atm 😅 can’t even spin new coach warm and fuzzy vibes coz the knuckle heads on the board decided round 22 was the optimal moment to make that decision and then dragged the whole club backwards through a hedge just to do it.

AFL 2022: Jake Stringer is Essendon envoy to entice Jordan De Goey to The Hangar

Jordan De Goey and Jake Stringer roaming the forward line together is a salivating prospect for Essendon fans and might still happen if a behind-the-scenes recruitment drive comes off.

Jon Anderson, Jon Ralph, Jay Clark, Glenn McFarlane and Marc McGowan

The lack of a coach hasn’t deterred Essendon’s bold recruiting drive, one that includes the prized signature of Jordan De Goey.
While De Goey’s future has largely been identified as remaining at Collingwood or accepting a lucrative offer from St Kilda, the Bombers have been quietly chipping away in the background.

Their presentation to De Goey is said to have included a delegate of senior players, including Jake Stringer who plays a similar forward/midfield role, a pairing that would prove highly exciting to Bomber fans and highly difficult for rival coaches to combat.

it took FIVE to write this stuff!!

fwiw i think most are missing the real JDG reasoning,

Dodo was all over him like a rash in his draft year, its a classic dodo wanting to win the long game schtick, like always

Herald sun always combines their trade rumour reporting into one daily mega article and merges the bylines

I dont know why, but theres an inkling of me thinking maybe the nightmare scenarios arent so bad

Lyon as coach, hird in as assistant/development coach, JDG as a freebie, trade 4 and 22 for dunkley and 11.
Grab best at 11.

That's 2 quality, finals ready mids into the side, a ton of no-BS leadership via lyon, hird and dunkley, and a midfield that rotates dunkley, jdg, merrett, parish, shiel, caldwell and Hobbs.

Maybe it was just the weekend we had. I miss competing in finals....as opposed to participating

Yes, no, no, and looks unlikely.

In a lot of ways us not having a coach and therefore not really able to be in the game for all these players is saving us from ourselves. It forces us to the draft.

Having said that I do like that we’re consistent in having no interest in pieces that could massively benefit us and just letting them go to Carlton, first Hewett, now Acres. Very on brand.

Parish to the Saints
Dunkley to Essendon
#9 to the bulldogs
FWIW Jay Clark was saying on MMM last week that clubs will come hard for Parish early next season as a FA. And it makes sense, why trade for him now when you can pick him up for nothing in 12 months.

The only viable ones are the two clubs who need a good year next year for the coach to survive in St. Kilda and Port.

And a ripping top 10 in the draft to boot apparently. Could have another top 7 pick as compo.
