Just finished watching Geelong v Collingwood…have now watched each of the finals.

It’s dispiriting tbh….don’t even know where to start. We need leadership, endurance runners, power around the ball….you name it, we need it.

I’m tempted to say out first priority should be a captain. Zac ‘ain’t the guy and we don’t even have a Harley/Maxell type to call on.

The midfield is the other obvious starting point - we are so undersized and so lacking running power compared to these teams. I would be open to trading whomever of Shiel, Parish or Merrett gets us the best haul.

I don’t think we would have been vaguely competitive in any of those games other than Brisbane/Richmond which was a level below the others in terms of pressure/physical intensity.

Where we are at as a side, its best to forget about trades and free agency. Go to the draft and build on what we already have. Establish a leadership group that are real leaders, and turn these players into the fittest players in the country. With a new coach build an environment that will attract these stars in the future. Right now I feel we will be paying too much to entice someone over. Not what we need right now.

Just my 2 cents

AFL 2022: Jake Stringer is Essendon envoy to entice Jordan De Goey to The Hangar

Jordan De Goey and Jake Stringer roaming the forward line together is a salivating prospect for Essendon fans and might still happen if a behind-the-scenes recruitment drive comes off.

Jon Anderson, Jon Ralph, Jay Clark, Glenn McFarlane and Marc McGowan

The lack of a coach hasn’t deterred Essendon’s bold recruiting drive, one that includes the prized signature of Jordan De Goey.
While De Goey’s future has largely been identified as remaining at Collingwood or accepting a lucrative offer from St Kilda, the Bombers have been quietly chipping away in the background.

Their presentation to De Goey is said to have included a delegate of senior players, including Jake Stringer who plays a similar forward/midfield role, a pairing that would prove highly exciting to Bomber fans and highly difficult for rival coaches to combat.

The only way De Goey works is with a strong leadership group. Dustin Martin had some troubles early, but strong leaders ensured he was kept in check for the most part. Our current “leaders” can’t even prepare themselves and the team for the first half of the season opener so how are they going to keep De Goey focused, fit, committed to team defence and away from making dumb decisions? Collingwood have unsuccessfully tried his whole career. I’m not confident in Essendon being the right team.

If we’re chasing De Goey, I’d like to hear how they plan to ensure he doesn’t get himself in trouble. He’s on thin ice as it is.

You put the blame on our crap starts on our leaders? As if getting a Dunkley or Pendlebury would change that. Lol. How about on our incompetent coaching staff that botched another pre-season?

Signing JDG would be almost as stupid as bringing Hird back.

I'm all for getting JDG, what's he even done that's so bad anyway??

(few minutes later after a quick internet search)..... Oh ok, never mind.

I put it on the coaches, senior players and fitness staff. A coach is there to guide, but coaches are not the only people that teach and drive the standards. Teaching and motivation very often comes from peers, especially experienced peers. Football is no different. Having basically another coach play besides you on every line of the ground will get the best out of the playing group.

The Pies won't be letting De Goey leave. All we are doing is driving up his price again.

Probably lost some value mid year.

Um, not exactly their choice
Yes it is.

He says pay me this amount of $ and I'll stay, they say ok no worries. That's how simple it will be. You just don't let guys that can score in big games go to save some dollars.

Flanders was very impressive in the VFL today, absolutely everywhere. He’s not massive but we need the consistent spread as much as we need the size, I reckon that’s worth a look.

Harry Cunningham as well is the complete opposite of sexy and high profile but again, run, spread, neat ball use. We need all of it. He could be a good stop gap until we find a stronger option on a wing.
