I’m glad someone bought this up, there is certainly some player development, strength and conditioning and I would also say utilisation stuff at play there because there were certainly players in that cohort that could have made it and made it well with a bit of TLC, but having said that if our record with picks in that bracket is so bad there’s very little practical downside in trading that selection for a known commodity.

Getting a readymade key position player in and getting Francis to his desired destination with a minimum of fuss is a win.

I don't think our trading has been particularly bad at least with these late round picks. Doesn't mean Setterfield and Weidman will work out but at least we've been okay at recycling other teams talent on the cheap.

2021: R3 for Jake Kelly ✅
2020: F4 for Peter Wright ✅, Nick Hind (late round pick swaps) ✅
2019: F3 for Tom Cutler, Andrew Phillips (late round pick swaps) ✅
2018: N/A
2017: N/A
2016: R5 for Tom Stewart ✅
2015: N/A

Kelly was a free agent. And yeah, James Stewart not Tom

would anyone trade back now given Brisbane look to have set themselves up for Ashcroft and Fletcher. Not sure how many more picks they can legitimately take to the draft.
Why wouldn't they? They're essentially gaining a top 25 pick for an 8 pick downgrade, in a draft that looks to be very even after pick 12 or so. Especially if next year's has as strong depth as everyone is suggesting.

I work directly with a Blues supporter & a Demons supporter. When I walked into the office this morning they were both pissing themselves that we'd take Setterfield & Weideman. The Blues fan particularly scathing of Setterfield.

Happy days:p

tell the blues fan i said EAD and **** carlton.

Ask him how it feels to have won a Brownlow, Coleman and miss out on finals?

if memory serves, dodo was a part of a small group of recruiters who asked for a special look at Weid draft year because he missed the combine through injury?

Hes like an elephant
Yeah rings a bell, and Dodo also had Setterfield in contention with McClug for the McGrath pick. So they’re two of his favourites from bygone years.

I like Dees fans, but I'd retort with how Benny Brown undermined their premiership defence and chance for a flag in Vic.

Carlton - well, how did top 4 go :p
Also, when did they draft Setterfield again? oh, they didn't.

we've been linked to a lot in those sharp rounds

2015 - Francis, Oliver, Curnow, Parish, Weideman, Milera.
2016 - McClug, McGrath, Setterfield, Brodie.

I wonder if he’s looking at Brodie and Wright and thinking geez there would be others out there not getting a crack that could flourish

I dont mind it.
Reckon Setterfield is a role player, but in a position of need. so why not
Weideman is a roll of the dice. Give him the games, new environment, etc and see what happens. Carbon copy of Sydney with Francis (and likely the same pick)

I was super keen on Bowes for both player and pick reasons. Bowes was legitimately top 5 in that draft...and probably in the middle of it. Good size, tidy skills.
They're shake the tree and see what falls type deals whilst we continue to draft and ideally develop

Feel like Narkle would be worth a go. Has definitely shown flashes
VFL midfield needs depth that can legitimately step up
Hence Stocker, Bytel and Narkle would be good options

I view Setterfield more as an AFL option. He should start for us.

Well last year a suns fan I work with was laughing at us for taking Wright and look how that turned out!

LOL jk I've never met a suns fan

If the Bowes deal gets done for a future 3rd, then I can't see the rules for cap dumps remaining the same for next year.

The Bowes deal is a 1 of 1, clubs don't normally have a top 10 pick to throw away like the Suns seem to want to do. For the record, I dont have a problem with Geelong, if the Suns are dumb enough to do the deal then good for them. I wish it was us.
But I doubt this is what the AFL had in mind when it changed the rules for salary dumps. They couldn't change the rules mid trade period after giving the Suns the green light

However if the AFL vetoes a trade cause Port can't pay their F1 and F2 for a guy that was the freaking number 1 pick last year, because they want to protect clubs from themselves, then surely you have to stop idiot list managers at clubs like the Suns from throwing away assets like they have here.

I cannot see how the AFL green light 7 in that deal.

Brodie was a dump but with a swap of 2nds (admittedly GCS' was 19 and Freo's was in the mid 20s)
but its a damn sight more equitable than the premier getting pick 7 for a pick in the 50s
