The question for Szybkowski in making it at the next level is whether he can develop his running ability to be able to defend the spread once it leaves the contest.

We have enough mids that can use speed on the outside with ball in hand (Merrett, Shiel, Tsatas), so that's not what his role will be. All he really needs to do is become a good enough (AFL standard) runner to match the work rate he already has, so that he isnt a total liability in full ground spread defence and when the ball leaves defensive side of the stoppage.

If he can do that he has enough other tricks (contested ball winning, clean hands, footy smarts etc) to be a handy role player in a functional midfield. Easier said than done obviously.

I feel as though you can get away with being slow, as long as your footy IQ is high, and you have great skills. Didn't happen to see what his disposal was like?

Ben Cunnington would struggle to get drafted today, Hope Mitch takes his chance and we sign him, there is still a spot for his type, especially on our list.

quick reaction time & smart positioning can counteract a lack of pace.
Reckon he'd be a handy piece of the puzzle - potential back up for Setterfield project not paying off.

Draper Perkins Caldwell
Martin Szybkowski Tsatas
+ Hobbs, Davey, Durham

not too shabby for 4-5 years down the track.

Nah he’d definitely still get drafted. He was drafted in 09 and that was the era when they started going for kids with athletic traits over football talent, yet he still went top 10. Crippa was considered slow in 2013 and still went first round.

Sam Mitchell made me realise you can be slow and agile.

There's slow in athletic testing and slow on-field, Mitchell had a very, very high level football brain and spatial awareness which offset any athletic leg speed he lacked.

He was also reasonably quick over 2-3 steps in any direction which gave him the ability to find space as he both out-thought the opposition and moved quickly enough to use that time to advantage.

Still, **** that guy.

Pendles and Mitchell have been 2 of my faves in the AFL this century, and this is largely why.
Hird-like in their ability to move in and out of traffic and have the game slow down for them.

good thing with players like Mitch (if we pick him up) - he did enough to at least catch the eye of many an observer, and he'll know he needs to work hard to make it.
I like these guys coming into our list.

Now wash your mouth out!

But yes, if Szybkowski can work hard similar to a guy like Dylan Clarke he's get enough good bits to see a potential AFL player in there.

Clarke just couldn't get his kicking up to AFL standard, but aside from that he was a great late selection.

if you guys haven't banned me for not hating Carlton or hawthorn yet, you're never gonna :p

I don't mind Szybkowksi and was a little surprised he went undrafted. Does a lot of team orientated stuff, links up nicely in the play, work rate is excellent.
I'm gonna be disappointed if we don't put him on the list now. This is the sort of project we should be chasing.
another mid-sized flanker or project ruck is not going to help.

Is Szybkowski completely ambidextrous by hand and foot?
Umm probably not 🤣

I was only speaking in the context of legspeed. I doubt even pick 1 has a career as good as Sam Mitchell though.

Ben McKay, free agent 2023.

Move heaven and earth to get the deal done. Chips, all in.

He is a fascination to me. A couple of the games I watched live I was not super impressed. He looked slow and I was looking for his physical game but outside center bounce it was not really there. I did miss a few of his early NAB games which where good. So after the last Champ game I watched a few replays and you can see his work rate is pretty good and he does link in pretty well. He actually reads the game very well. I think he really should have been picked up as a rookie. He is the exact rookie type. Several question marks but also a few good points.

The more I read (and little I see) I think of Daniel Cross. Not explosive, not overly athletic but just gets the job done.

Cross played 200+ games did he not? the consummate team player and we desperately need someone like that

I think we commented at the time of that 360 interview about his frame and how in a few years he would be a very big man, hope he impresses enough we sign him up.

Watson's career should've shown us that you don't need to be explosive or athletic if you can be a big unit who dishes the ball out of congestion.

Similar for Priddis
Lets not re write history. Jobe's career almost ended before it began before 2006 because he couldn't run. It took his dad to tell him to take his fitness seriously or just give it away.
He came back one of the fittest at the club in 2006 and never looked back.

Priddis and Jobe weren't explosive, but they were strong endurance runners that had enough speed to get from contest to contest and not get caught out in transition.
The trope that they were plodders that couldn't run is not based in reality. They weren't quick but they were strong power runners.

given it's SSP and "needs" isn't Brad's thing at the moment, I'm hoping we go for him as a highly touted option (read best available) and dodge the project
Worst case - he plays a lot of VFL but can come in when needed
Best case - we have a strong leader who does the team stuff at AFL level and provides an element of physical support in what is shaping up as a decent competitive midfield.
