Just because we have cap space, doesn’t mean we need to spend it.

I would rather Essendon make long plays for players over a number of years when the team should be peaking. Which is why I really hope we hold onto Josh Mahoney. He did it at Melbourne extremely well.

For example, what are our main areas of worry? Small forward for one, big bodied midfielder for another, maybe a gun Full-Forward. That is a three year period of targeting.

The blessing in disguise for a new coach is that in that three year period, hopefully the system is embedded enough to target those areas.

So really, if no one comes to us during the off season, I would be happy. Our best case situation is if we are starting to hit our straps in a few years, we have cap space at the ready and we know exactly what players we want. Rather than throwing cash at random players just because we have it.

It's more commonly the manager trying to inflate the salary offer of the existing club, rather than a club chasing the player making it known, and then having egg on their face when it doesn't work out. There's nothing really to gain from doing that, other than pissing off the player's manager and possibly the player himself.

Remember when we got Shiel, and everyone thought he was going to Hawthorn or Carlton, until he announced Essendon?

Or when Dunkley nominated us, and no one even knew about it until trade week when the manager went on radio and confirmed it?

That's more our style. Don't announce anything until after the player has agreed in principle.

What happens after that is a bit of a s**t show and you don't always get the player, but you don't usually advertise who you're chasing or how hard you're chasing them until you've won the race. Unless you're Norf. 🤣
You make a good argument, but nothing surprises me anymore, least of all the club making moves that wind up with the club having egg on its face.

Latest from Edmund on us;

Cam Zurhaar - will stay, they’re negotiating at the moment at North Melbourne, this is a big re-signing for them because his head had been turned at some degree by Essendon at others, he had a contract on the table since June, he told SEN's Crunch Time.

Tom Mitchell - “There’s been sightings, there’s been St Kilda sightings, there’s been Essendon sightings, quite a few café sightings in recent times… “I think Essendon would have to ask the question, it makes sense given the sort of player they’ve been after.

Josh Dunkley - “The Brisbane offer is comparable, the Port Adelaide offer is the big one financially.

Tom Mitchell, I can't imagine why we'd be interested. Has he got any leadership credentials? We have enough one-way seagulls in the midfield as it is, we don't need an old one taking mid minutes off Hobbs etc unless he has something real to offer.

Josh Dunkley moving interstate seems unlikely. Close knit family > Money. I mean unless the money is double anything anyone local might have offered.

I believe Dunkley's girlfriend lives in Adelaide. A move to Port would make sense.

Mitchell - if he was cheap enough and we lost a Parish ie, then I'd consider it.

Anyone else mildly frustrated by us not even in the race for Taranto?
Yes but he is not going to look at us given where we are and where the Tigers are.

I’m not because we can’t afford to be paying two firsts. I’m more frustrated that we’re not in the conversation for Dunkley because we can blow away any offer other teams will make. He’ll also cost half of what Taranto costs on the trade table.

Tom Mitchell… If that’s true, I’m convinced this club is permanently screwed when it comes to building a midfield.
Glad Collingwood is the most likely destination given that Richmond is set to land Taranto.
I doubt he'd be anything more than a stop gap if we lost a player.

I’d prefer to look at the likes of XOH, Smith, Robertson and even Setterfield/Dow to build depth over Mitchell because Mitchell will take someone’s midfield minutes. A stopgap to me needs to be someone that balances the midfield.
I mean, we can do both - trade for best 22 talent and trade for depth. It's not one or the other. As I said, I'd only consider it if we lost a Parish. We need experienced bodies in there to protect our younger players.

Don’t understand the parish talk lmao. I mean I can understand of argument of it but it hasn’t been mentioned anywhere by any journo, by the anyone to with the club except people on big footy haha. I think you can categorically rule out talking about parish like he’s gonna get traded, it won’t happen.

I don't think it will happen, like 98% of things discussed on fan footy sites. But I'm happy to speculate.

If his on $800-850k a year I’d hope the hawks would pay a large chunk of the salary.

Me personally I’d rather we not pick up Mitchel and develop Hobbs/Perkins in that spot.
