I think they would’ve let him go if we gave them 2 top 10s. Would’ve been huge overs and they’d likely develop those 2 picks into gun players and we’d end up looking silly anyway.
Yep, they asked for 2 of our top 10 picks. It looked like well overs at the time. Hindsight

So in hindsight, it's one of Perkins, Cox, Reid and Hobbs for Dunkley.
Essendon offered one of the three and 2021 2nd (which they traded out I think) for Dunkley. Dogs said no.

Hmm. I was in favour of doing the deal back then and in hindsight, I would 100% do it.

One thing Dunkley brings is strength to the midfield, consistency, defensive running and very very valuable leadership. I believe it was a mistake not to offer the two top 10 picks even if it was overs.

Yeh right now, very dangerous to judge undeveloped picks and say you’d do that deal. 12 months on could be a very different story.

I think he brings value beyond just talent though. He brings leadership, consistency and discipline, arguably Essendon's biggest deficiency. Changing the culture is just as important as bringing in talent.

It’s still funny that he wanted to leave dogs because of bad culture to come to essendon which has an even worse culture

Not off field though. Heaps of stuff happened with their boys that didn't make the papers.

At least their players gave a s**t about their performance though even if they were all party boys

Our guys care, they just lack the right skill set to be effective footballers. Can't blame the individual for the unbalanced state of the list.

Not on what my inside info was. They where making a Daniher stance.

They actually did not even get to formal negotiation with us.

Just looking at the list of OOC players:

Probable extensions: McGrath, Perkins, Caldwell, Menzie, Hayes, Guelfi, Cox, Durham
Wait and see: Jones, Stringer, J Davey, Baldwin, Hind, Visentini, Goldstein, Setterfield
Probable delistings/retirements: Heppell, Hunter, Kelly, Weideman, Wanganeen

Top list is pretty self explanatory. All bar Hayes (who is a young KPP who's shown a lot of signs) are relatively young players in and around the best 22 without many injury issues.
Middle group have various potential issues surrounding them. Jones, Baldwin, Davey and Setterfield mostly surrounding their injury issues. Hind through being very much on the fringe of the side and turning 30 in August. Visentini through being an untried ruck, Stringer is an awkward size and role and being nearly 30 himself too, could be a trade at the end of the year. Goldstein through age as well.
Bottom group pretty self explanatory too. I have a soft spot for Wanganeen but he and Hunter seem too injury prone unfortunately.

I’d say guelfi will be moved on

Based on what? He's more than handy depth at 27 by the end of the year at a minimum, good injury history (generally plays 60%+ AFL games year on year) and seems like a popular member of the side. Unless he requests a trade home or a really bad injury (ala Snelling) I can't see him being moved on.

Aren't they all instances where the team didn't want to pay up for the trade cost though? (Maybe apart from Ablett, can't remember that one).

If a team doesn't want to trade a player and asks for an amount far over and above the value of that player - Dogs wanted the highest trade value paid for any player in the history of the AFL - then it's not really 'team didn't want to pay up'.

Depending our injury list this year I can see a few going past him and guelfi spending a bit of time in the 2s

Maybe, but he's shown to be AFL quality depth at a minimum

Gotta make space on the list for more players to develop somehow

Weideman has another year on his contract, he'll still be here.

He doesn't:

Things can move fast in the trade period. They did for Weideman. In the space of a few days, his workplace moved from Cranbourne to Tullamarine, although his travel time reduced by only a minute from his home in Camberwell. Now his future is sorted at Essendon for the next two years.
