First impressions are the standard is not up on last year ....30% I read earlier is rubbish. I think it will be 5 years before a reasonable standard is reached. The grounds appear to big for the women. Not much penetration in the kicking..mmm long way to go but I am happy to say they will get better but paying them more is NOT the answer.
Skill level wont improve if they introduce more teams and dilute any potential improvement through better players coming through

Lol how much they get paid has approximately four fifths of **** all to do with the quality of skills

Absolute crap. Larger participation and exposure means that more young women will start playing, simple numbers say that there will be good players in there.

Perhaps the overall standard will not be as high as if there were less players, but it will not be a marked difference.

Over the next 3-5 years the skill level wont improve with the addition of another 2-4 teams which will happen. They should keep the same number of teams and improve the standard with the influx of higher skilled players over the next 3-5 years. All that will happens is these higher skilled players will be spread thinner and the skill level and therefor entertainment with plateau at best

Of course pay impacts skill if they get to the point where they can become fully professional and don't have to work other jobs any more.

Like a lot of people, I realistically just watch for virtue signalling points.. but geez, 2 hours for such little scoring is hard yards.

Unfortunately the depth isnt there and wont be until its a mainstream female sport. Makes perfect sense for the AFL pushing it and fully expect them to keep at it. AFLX with smaller field and teams may have worked better for the women's game... atleast they would score.

Not interested in watching them play a hybrid game really. Has to be the real thing to be successful.

Tonight was a bit of a bore but i mean its 1 match into the season... there were plenty of decent matches last season after a poor game 1.

The fumbling was probably the biggest frustration for me more so than the lack of scoring

Can't knock their effort (harder than some of the men's players) and woman should be encouraged to play AFL but the games are awful to watch especially the scoring. The league shouldn't expand the number of senior teams and should focus on improving their quality and growing the women's game at the lower levels and juniors. More teams is just going to lower the skills even further.

I have always taken estimations of the value of the broadcast rights with a grain of salt. For a start, people keep saying they are free currently, but they are not free, putting the broadcasts on costs a fair bit. Secondly, and more significantly, the A league was talking those sort of numbers for about 3 times as many games, and eventually had to give the free to air rights away. Fox is paying that sort of money for the pay rights, but again, its for a lot more content.
The article didn't specify why the AFLW Rights (FTA & Fox) might be worth $30,000,000 in 2019 -but, obviously, there will be 2 more teams in 2019 (& more in 2020), so there will be more games. Also, when the AFLW is played in the evenings & stand alone, & before the AFL pre-season starts, it obtains good ratings -then drops away after the AFL starts. AFLW evening matches rated much better than the A League.

The skills will increase each year. The 2018 practice games had good scoring. Last year, there were many entertaining games, with good skills on display from many players.

I attended the game, the first half of Carlton v. Coll. was good to watch, & had a good atmosphere. Perfect AF conditions. The less said about the second half, the better -great intensity, but very disappointing.

The 2nd half should be considered an aberration -it was a very poor spectacle, no goals, players weren't holding their marks, big nos. around the ball/constant congestion created too much pressure (actual or inferred) for the women to overcome.
Coaches are to blame for the flooding, which was unrelenting throughout the whole game. Should the AFLW go to 2 on the bench only (leaving more skilled players on the field)? Fatigue is normal in sport, & the game will open up in the 3rd/4th qtr. -with more goals being kicked.

We cant jump to any conclusions re skill standards after just 1 game. Many experts had been saying skills had significantly increased since 2017; & practice games appeared to vindicate this view. I am very confident the remaining games will be much better than the turgid 2nd half of this game.

I am not sure further increasing fatigue opens up the game. Fatigued players are more likely to make the sort of errors that cause congestion, and you get less spread from stoppages, so fast play breaks down.

Huge improvement in skill in one offseason is pretty unlikely. If that were possible, you’d be getting AFL teams going from missing the finals one year, to premiers the next!

Grounds are to big. Happens in the local league men's especially in vafa lower divisions

Play on small grounds all year and send you to vfl or large grounds come finals time. Scores are generally low.

16 a side is idiotic imo as well.

fatigue seemed to contribute to fumbling, and I think that the players were aware of how they were fumbling which could have put extra pressure on them and leading to more fumbling.

Token rubbish. Cant believe it gets so much hype and money being pumped into it when there are other elite female sports which is so much better being starved of development. Thought this year might have been an improvement on last year but 5 goals for a match and none in the second half, what a farce, its like watching paint dry. Had to turn it off.

I coach elite level womens basketball and our game is losing players to this garbage. At least the only difference between mens and womens basketball is that the men dunk it.

Im assuming it was free entry again to Ikon park last night? anyone confirm? i wouldn't be paying to watch a game that is just fumble, fumble, drop mark, pile up, pile up, pile up. No one can kick the ball any more than 30m - with a smaller ball mind you. Lets be honest it is atrocious skills.

And how on earth was Mo Hope a marquee player? Did nothing last year and nothing last night. She reminds me of a certain big male forward we used to have.

Maybe you should get these other elite female sports to put more money into development. Unless you expect the AFL to fund that too?

The WNBL has been around for a lot longer, and with the Opals has had considerable exposure during Olympics and world champiobships and such. If it hasnt made headway in that time, its never going to.

All matches are free for AFLW except for the game at Optus Stadium.

Signed as elite goal kicker from the VWFL. Hasnt really transitoned well to AFLW at this stage....8 games in.
