Will we be better than WCE next season?

Given they will again have access to priority at the draft which will be the third time. Or is it the fourth?

Fremantle best and fairest Ange Stannett leads a changing of the guard as Dockers premiership ambitions intensify

Ange Stannett believes Freo’s maiden AFLW flag is within reach – and she is not afraid to tell the world, writes ELIZA REILLY.

There’s a changing of the guard unfolding at Fremantle and it could prolong the club’s premiership window.
The Dockers’ best and fairest was won by utility Ange Stannett on Friday night at Crown Perth. In the tightest count possible, Stannett prevailed by one vote over All-Australian defender Emma O’Driscoll, the pair finishing on 154 and 153 respectively.
Ruck Mim Strom, 22, finished third with 123 votes. Irishwoman Aine Tighe wasn’t too far behind on 115. Tighe was originally recruited to support Strom in the ruck but a series of serious knee injuries left Strom as Fremantle’s number one ruck, a role she has played for 49 games since debuting in 2020.

Next in the count was defender Laura Pugh (113) and captain Hayley Miller (109). The pair are both members of Fremantle’s AFLW leadership group. As are Tighe and Stannett. The only leader missing from the top 10 was Gabby O’Sullivan, who suffered an injury-affected season.
The bottom half of the top four is where Fremantle’s future lies.
Orlagh Lally, another Irishwoman, has just completed her second season of AFLW football and is yet to complete a full pre-season, flying in late both years. Still only 22, her athleticism on the wing and going forward gave the Dockers power and grunt.
Dana East emerged as the future of Fremantle’s midfield in just her second year and third season of AFLW. At 21, East has been likened to league best and fairest and fellow Docker Kiara Bowers. And it’s not hard to see why given her appetite for contested ball and clearances.
Megan Kauffman is 26 but a football infant. After a promising college tennis career, Kauffman decided to play amateur football for Wembley last year and skipped the WAFLW when she was drafted by Fremantle. Her forward craft is improving and she can also chop out in the midfield.

Rounding out the top 10 is Madi Scanlon. Another mature age draft pick, the 22-year-old was cruelled by injury in her debut season but played every game in 2023, emerging as a reliable intercept defender.
That puts the average age of the top 10 at 25. And Miller is the only past recipient to feature.
There was no Bowers, a four-time winner of the award who mind you was still exceptional in the few games she played as she battled a knee issue. There was also no Ebony Antonio, fairest and best back in 2018.
Instead, the Dockers’ next generation has taken hold of the baton and, if their trajectory continues, Fremantle could suddenly find itself back in premiership contention with a chance to reward the Bowers and Antonios of the world, who have bled purple since the beginning.
“It’s going to be so important for us to keep those young players at our club, especially the girls that are going to be around a lot longer than I am,” Stannett said.
“I’ve said I’ve probably only got a few years left at the club, if that, because of the talent that’s coming through now.

“We had a number of young players step up when they’ve needed to this year. It’s exciting.
“For them to both (fellow top three finishers Strom and O’Driscoll) be as young as they are is ridiculous. It shows that it doesn’t matter what age you are, how many years of experience you have, if you bring intent and attitude, you’re going to be able to lift and inspire your teammates.”
Stannett believes Fremantle’s maiden AFLW premiership is within reach – and she is not afraid to tell the world.
“Confidence or belief. That’s why we play,” she said. “That’s what we’re here to do. If we’re not talking about that, I don’t think we should be here, we shouldn’t be at this level.
“We’re going to continue to talk about finals because that’s what we’re striving for. We’re going to own that because if you don’t, you’re probably never going to get there.
“It might look like we finished 13th but you look at the ladder and we were so close to so many of the big teams. We need that consistency and to click more often than not to get there.
“Flags are on the horizon.”

Watching a bit of TV this afternoon and saw Aine Tighe and Hayley Miller teaching English comedian Bill Bailey how to kick and handball.

Program was about his trip around the South West of WA. Not sure when it was recorded but the vision was from Fremantle Oval.

When does trade actually start? Hopefully we get something good for Roxy to help us bring in the ones that we’ve been linked with.

Looks like a few of the West Aussies have nommed for the national draft

Means our exclusive pool is even worse

Not sure if this is due to list spaces of each club or whether the girls just want to go elsewhere
Probably just want to improve chances of getting drafted now that the salaries are a bit better

Fremantle forward Roxy Roux is weighing up interest from opposition clubs in a bid to reinvigorate her career during the AFLW sign and trade period.
While Roux is still considering her options, it’s understood that the 22-year-old is open to a move after playing just five games this year. It’s believed that three clubs have expressed interest, including preliminary finalist Adelaide and cross-town rivals West Coast.
A walking highlights reel early on in her career with her incredible vertical leap and ability to hit the scoreboard, Roux was sent into defence this season. She had just one disposal in Fremantle’s loss to North Melbourne in round six after returning to the side following a shin injury early in the year.

Roux made an instant impact in her debut season, kicking four goals in her first three games after she was drafted by the Dockers with pick 12 in 2019. She received a Rising Star nomination and was named in the AFLPA 22under22 in the same year.
Roux has played 37 games for the Dockers, kicking 16 goals.

It’s set to be a busy off-season for Fremantle, with the Dockers hopeful of landing several experienced players via the trade period in a bid to climb back into finals contention.

Western Bulldogs number one pick Gabby Newton is Fremantle’s primary target but the Dockers are also chasing deals for Collingwood defender Ash Brazill and Eagles midfielder Aisling McCarthy.

As revealed by CODE Sports last month, West Coast was the favourite to land retired West Coast Fever netballer Verity Simmons despite interest from both clubs, with an Eagles contract set to be finalised in the coming weeks.

So Maria Rioli, daughter of Maurice Snr, has nominated for the national draft. She's eligible as a father-daughter selection for Richmond but apparently not for us. Does anyone know if the WAFL eligibility clause applies for AFLW?

Pretty sure it isn't

AFLW rules only require 1 AFL game
