GIANTS forward Brodee Mowbray will make her long-awaited return from an ACL injury in Sunday’s Sydney Derby against the Swans.

Mowbray will return for her first AFLW game in 337 days after being sidelined with an ACL injury suffered in round eight last year. After a diligent rehab program, Mowbray returned through an organised scrimmage last week and has now been cleared of an AFLW return against the crosstown rival on Sunday. Selected with pick 55 in the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft, the crafty medium forward will be looking to utilise her strong hands and her ferocious attack on the opposition in Sunday’s Sydney Derby.

Joining Mowbray in the side is GIANTS newcomer Aliesha Newman who will make her GIANTS debut against her former side, as well as defender Izzy Huntington. Newman comes into the side for her first game since joining the club in the summer via a trade with the Swans, while Huntington returns after missing last week’s game as a late out with knee soreness.

Reliable defender Emily Pease has also kept her place in the side after successfully getting through training this week following a minor ankle injury sustained in last week’s draw with the Suns. Injured duo Cambridge McCormick and Nicola Barr exit from last week’s side, as well as Caitlin Miller who has been omitted after being the late inclusion for Huntington last week.

The GIANTS will take on the Swans for bragging rights at Henson Park at 3:05pm on Sunday in the third AFLW Sydney Derby.

Unfortunately our AFLW team lost to the Sydney team at Henson Park. We came within 3 points of the swans with a minute and a half left in the game, but the Sydney Swans AFLW team eventually beat us 43-40.

Our unfortunate record against Sydney this year is 0 win - 4 losses across both the AFL and AFLW competitions.

The girls should be proud of their efforts this year. They're not getting all the results but we're so close time and again and not getting embarrassed out there. It's small margins in the AFLW because almost being there and then hitting finals.

The Swans have held off a fast-finishing GIANTS side to reignite their season with a three-point victory in a thriller at Henson Park.

After returning GIANTS forward Brodee Mowbray goaled with a minute remaining to give her side a hint of hope, it took a critical tackle from the Swans' Cynthia Hamilton at the centre bounce to clinch the 6.7 (43) to 6.4 (40) win on Sunday afternoon.

The Swans had opened up a convincing lead until the contest turned into an arm wrestle after the main break as the GIANTS kept challenging without quite reclaiming the lead. Captain Bec Beeson led the way in the GIANTS midfield with 25 disposals and 10 clearances, often while going head-to-head in an enthralling duel with Swans gun Gardiner.

Mowbray returned in style in her first match for 337 days since sustaining a torn ACL last year, while Aliesha Newman impressed on her club debut against her former side.

Alicia Eva Turns Back The Clock

The GiIANTS' former skipper has settled into a forward role this season after having a taster last year, but was still able to turn back the clock against the Swans with her experience and persistence. Eva booted the opening goal of the game when she was the quickest to respond to a loose ball in the goalsquare as she pounced to gather cleanly then dribble through a deft kick. The 33-year-old added a second as her side surged in the third term while one of several GIANTS to swamp Swans defenders, setting the tone as the GIANTS pushed the Swans until the dying stages.

Round 5 New
Round 5 vs West Coast Eagles

The GIANTS have added four players to their extended squad for Sunday’s clash with the Eagles at Henson Park.

Caitlin Miller, Courtney Murphy, Fleur Davies and Annise Bradfield have all been named in the 24-player squad for the meeting with the Eagles.

A former small forward now being utilised in a new role off half-back, Miller is looking to play her second game of the season following her round three appearance against the Suns.

Murphy – a tall forward recruited from the Lions in the summer – is also pushing for her second game this year after debuting against the Tigers in round two.

Meanwhile, Davies is looking to break through for her first game of the year after the 185cm ruck played in nine of the GIANTS’ 10 games last season.

Also included in the extended squad for the second straight week, Bradfield will make her GIANTS debut if she is named in the final team of 21.

Coming out of last week’s side is Mikayla Pauga who will miss the next two games via suspension.

The GIANTS will name their final team of 21 to take on the Eagles on Friday at 5pm.

The GIANTS and the Eagles will face off at Henson Park for the first time on Sunday at 3:05pm.

A. Crowd for our home game at Henson Park against the Eagles was 938.

B. Our total home crowds for the 2024 AFLW season so far are:
1. 2,003 vs Bulldogs at Manuka
2. 1,507 vs Gold Coast at Manuka
3. 938 vs West Coast at Henson Park

Our next (penultimate) home game is against Adelaide at Henson Park on October 13 - when the Bathurst 1000 is on :-(

It doesn't seem like we've done anything to engage the inner west community.

That and the fact it was day after the grand final and rainy. Very disappointing.

Would hope a nice sunny day would double that number. Next we play the Crows and I'll be unable to make it as I'll be on holidays.

I think that might be our lowest ever crowd figure at Henson Park. Unfortunately I think the Swans have 'stolen' a lot of supporters from that area (I put stolen in quotes because really, a lot of inner west residents are much more in the Swans home turf and originally joined the Giants because they were the first team available - like myself). I haven't seen the club's efforts this year, being overseas, but always got the impression they're trying hard to engage people.

Definitely being cheap tickets, local and without cover means it's easy to decide not to turn up in poor weather, too.

The Swans win. At this point you can pencil in a win for the derby until things flip.

They win the mental game (I feel) and we lose.

And you can write the loss of confidence to the close losses everytime. We led last season and were brilliant for that game, after that loss we kept losing. We're doing the same this season too. Competitive until we have that heartbreak game.

That and I'm not sure when we'll win. Our staunchest supporters turn up but as a foundation club in the AFLW I have grave concerns we're not at the pointy end more often.
Yeah, when I realise that every time I bring my dad to a game I usually warn him we’re going to lose… it’s a tough thing for a club without the big supporter base like some of the Melbourne clubs.

A (tiny) measure of progress is that when this West Coast match was played in 2023 at Blacktown, we got a crowd of 927. So we got 11 more people yesterday!

Our club presumably did the sums, which is why we don’t play a couple of these Henson Park games at Blacktown? This year all 3 Sydney AFLW games are at Henson Park.

Is anything happening with Tom Wills Oval? I think that would be the best location for AFLW games.

Henson Park is convenient for me personally -- a short stroll to Gadigal or Central Stations, 7 or 5 minutes to Sydenham Station, then an easy walk -- but is inconvenient for many out west. Conversely, Blacktown is inconvenient for people closer to the city but more convenient for supporters out west. Olympic Park is relatively straightforward to get to from both the city or the west.

Having said that, for a non-stadium, Henson Park does provide a good view of the game thanks to the large hill and is a pleasant experience.
