AFLW AFLW/VFLW 2024 - General Discussion

We seem to be quiet, no announcements of losing any players, or delisting.

No news is good news (I really hope I haven't jinxed it), as per the draft rules this year we don't have to delist or draft anybody. We can theoretically take the same 30 players from the 2022B season into season 2023. I don't think we will, we usually hold our delisting/signing announcements until late in the piece.

2pm tomorrow (Wednesday) is the cutoff time for when we can lose players (maximum of 2) to the ******** PSP. For what its worth, Berry, Blackburn, E. Brown, Fitzgerald, Grant, Hunt, Lagioia, Lamb, Lynch, and Newton have all been spotted at training recently, so safe to say they are staying.

I feel that Nell wasn't developing as well as we'd have liked especially with Newton and Moody playing as key forwards. It's a shame to see her go but Collingwood just lost Molloy so she's at least got an opportunity there.

Her 2022A season was very good and I thought that the only way was up for her going into the 2022B season but as you say with Newton and Moody immediately making an impact it was always going to be tough for Nell to fit into that forward line.

There certainly isn't any bad blood, it's purely opportunity.

Two delistings in Amanda Ling and Annabel Strahan, and Brooke Vernon is retiring. Rest of the squad signed on.

Apart from not bringing in another experienced mid I think this has been our best off-season, we retained essentially every player that we need moving forward.

I have been told that clubs came knocking for several of our players with of all them turning them down, it just shows that the environment at the club has certainly changed for the better in recent years.

Vernon retiring young at 21, didn't end up playing a game for us and managed just the three at Carlton. Ling only managed two games and Strahan only 1. Glad that we kept the vast majority of the team together, building experience and cohesion is extremely important at this point in the team.

Interesting we haven't signed a mids, forward and defender coaches yet

Thought with vflw starting next week we would see a dual role

Interesting that we had both Pick 11 and Pick 15, but chose to pass on Pick and end the draft on one pick. Did we only have one list spot open?

Apparently we're keen to headhunt some players who nominated for other states and went undrafted

Interesting. We must have someone very specific in mind. Otherwise it seems like an odd move passing on the 15th best player for those who go undrafted.

Couple of NSW nominees that went undrafted in Maggie Gorham and Jemima Wrigley are mentioned in this article, after the bit saying the Dogs would take 1 player and look to free agents.

Dominique Carruthers (pick No.11)
Two passes

The Dogs haven't quite yet finalised their list, set to take two players in the post-draft signing period which runs from Wednesday to Thursday. They have been heavily linked with ex-Lion Brianna McFarlane and former Giant Maggie Gorham.

In Carruthers, they have landed themselves a hard-running midfielder who covers the ground well. The 27-year-old previously played at North Shore Bombers in the AFL Sydney competition, and has been most recently lining up for the Bulldogs' VFLW team. The 177cm Carruthers is a former soccer player.

The Western Bulldogs have signed Brianna McFarlane as an unrestricted free agent for AFLW Season Eight.

McFarlane is a strong marking forward with great athleticism, and has the ability to pinch-hit in the ruck.

Hailing from Yamba in northern NSW, she spent the early parts of her youth playing soccer and picked up Aussie Rules later than most.

But within six months of switching codes, McFarlane played for Coolangatta Tweed in the QAFLW, represented NSW/ACT and was selected for the Eastern Allies.

This experience saw her signed as a rookie at Brisbane for AFLW seasons 2018 and 2019, but a shoulder injury hindered her chances at debuting.

After undergoing a dual shoulder reconstruction, McFarlane returned to footy with Southport in the QAFLW and then signed with the Bulldogs’ VFLW team for 2023.

The 22-year-old has averaged seven disposals and three marks across the VFLW opening two rounds.

The Western Bulldogs have completed their AFLW list for season eight, signing unrestricted free agent Maggie Gorham.

Gorham is a former number four pick, who was initially drafted to GWS in the 2019 NAB AFLW National Draft.

The Canberran retired herself at the end of the 2020, after deciding football was not what she wanted to pursue at that point in her life.

Since then, she has featured for Ainslie in the AFL Canberra competition.

The 21-year-old is speedy when moving the ball by foot, effective in front of goals and has lightening quick hands.

Gorham also claimed the Bainrot Medal in 2019 as AFL Canberra’s Best and Fairest player.

Exactly who we need.

Liking the sound of all of our recruits. A bit more fire power, skills and pace in the middle to forward half of the field. Whilst getting some help in the centre, with ruck relief. And Carruthers, who sounds like a good clearance player. Cannot wait to see her and Blackburn working together.
