Aker, Richo, Hall say Ablett should take the cash

I can't really see the club forcing Ablett to retire. He is the kind of bloke that will retire on his own terms, when still playing great football.

The club (Gary Ayres) shafted his old man. I'm sure Jnr gets reminded of that.

I think he might be waiting out in the hopes they win another flag and goes with their blessing.

To say Ablett's only earning avenue is as an AFL player... pftt, really. Ablett already has interests in property, a brewery etc. His status suggests that when he retires, any club would pay him substantially just to show his face around the place. He is a proven leader(Cats leadership group) so coaching wouldn't be beyond him at some level either. Even at Geelong he could earn up to 1mil for the next 5-7 years... how much do you think he needs? Living a modest lifestyle on the coast?

His dad is the better player - and what's he done post football? how many clubs are paying him for his face? Or Tony Lockett?

He may or may not stay - but your argument there is flawed

I hate to break this to u guys the geelong players know he is leaving they have already been informed .
3 years 5.1 million deal is done i will not reveal my source other than to say
its a close association with his manager

It would appear from the comments made by Ling, Mooney etc - that if he goes - there would be no hard feelings - and they are making that clear to him publicly.

Personally I think that is great - he will always be a Geelong great (regardless of his decision) - and should be celebrated when they have their flag re-unions.

As stefoid rightly points out, the reality of Ablett going to GC17 is that they will have less cap room to chase after a Cooney, or Griffen, or Harbrow. Scott Clayton drafted all these players and would no doubt love to have another crack at them. Should Ablett chose to stay, these 3 Dogs players will all move up the GC17 pecking order. I don't think these comments from Hall or Aker will have much of an impact on Ablett's ultimatre decision but they are certainly being said with the best intentions of trying to keep the Bulldog list together.

Can you really see a future where Ablett doesn't fit into a best 22?

Geelong has shown that they love to give players options in retirement over the past few years, don't see why that would change.
Your just speculating on your deluded emotions. You can't predict what the club or Ablett would do regarding retirement. As for Hird well he was never offered that much money. At the end of the day it don't matter what hall richo aka hird or others say. It's what Ablett will do and I think he will go for the money. He's already won flags, brownlow now it's only money. Sad but if I was Geelong I'd learn to deal with it.

Perhaps if the Eagles did something about the drug issues before Judd walked then perhaps he would have hung around.

One ex-player died, a current player flat-lined, the captain running away from police, the next best player jumping up and down on a taxi god knows what he was on. Connection with crime lords, drug runners at the club, etc. Do you really blame him for wanting to leave if he was clean and he saw the club in denial and out of control.

Even the police and legal system that let Eagles players get away with murder over there and an administration thinking it could keep sweeping the mountain under the rug was probably more of an issue for him than chasing money. Nobody over there was living in reality.

If he was going to go then why wouldn't he look for the best deal he could get? I don't see how you can blame Judd for the sea of problems that were brewing over there. It is a weak cop-out to blame him for having enough.
It's not that he left westcoast to join a group of righteous saints. And of all the things westcoast may have done they were never accused of banging another player's wife.

Was being somewhat sarcastic:
i.e for the next 2 years, there's going to be the XXX should go to the GC/GWS, and the team supporters are going to say "No, he's a one team man, he loves the club too much, dog act to go" while the opposition are going to say "should go, he's done enough, more chance of success".

I don't want these teams to start up. I don't want ANY of my team's players leaving. The way this is setup, there is going to be too much distraction from on-field issues, and it's been handled terribly by the AFL.

I seriously doubt that.

I would like to see young Gaz stay at Geelong but that aside, what do you think he can do for money once his football career is finished? Does he have a trade? Or ability with share trading? Or real estate development? Obviously the media doesn't interest him and presumably the speakers' circuit is also beyond him. And I don't know if coaching will be his bag either.

Certainly he will make a terrific living at Geelong for another 5 years, and hopefully he invests wisely enough to never have to work. But if you have serious doubts about the assertion that his earning capacity is limited, perhaps you can enlighten us as to what he might do for a crust, should he feel the need.

You're kidding yeah? Ablett Jnr is a hall of fame player in the making, many suggesting he may retire the best player in the modern era. It is certainly hard to recall 1 player dominating 3 seasons like Ablett has in '07,'08,'09.

So... on the topic of the 3 players mentioned.
Aker - Wouldn't know what the word honour means, let alone the concept of identifying your team mates as 'mates'. Always an individual, played for himself and disliked by nearly all who has played along side him... no surprises here.

Richo - Another individual who busted a gut, yes... but trashed rookie team mates on-field than any player I've ever seen. I really don't think he gave a toss about the club to be honest. Richo never tasted anything remotely close to success, his opinion doesn't hold any weight.. any player would leave Richmond for 1.9mil if they could. The place is a farce. :D

Hall - Yet another individual. Obviously his mentallity doesn't stretch past his emotions, which break team rules over and over and over again. Really, this guy is a blight on the game more than anything, of course he'd take the dangled carrot.

All 3 of these player while respected, primarily played for themselves before their team. James Hird busted a gut for his team time and time again, Captained a premiership and would never have left the club he loved. Hird says Ablett should stay. I know which player I'd rather put Ablett in the bracket of.

So how do we view Ablett if he packs up to roll in the cash at Gold Coast given what you have said in your post?

ablett is an awesome player. i remember a few years ago against dockers at subi when he was still playing mostly as a half forward being in awe of him and just knowing he was special. the only question that might (and a big might) hang over his head is whether the rise of geelong has contributed to the rise of gary. whether at the gold coast through tough times or geelong (if it occurs) this will be the test of whether he sits at the top of his peers and those 10 or so years either side of him. he is that good. i'd like to see him go to a losing team and continue to be awesome and prove that he is what i think he is.

the guy doesnt need money its not like he is on $50k a year, i dont see how money is relevent to people who have $1mil+, what he will make at geelong is enough to live comfortably 5 times over. Does he need to live in a $5mil house instead of a $2mil house? makes no difference

he definately has earning potential if he retires a geelong legend, multiple premiership player and son of the great gary senior (moreso than a guy who played for GC, however long that club lasts for)

Personally I'd rather retire as a 1 club legend and be respected throughout the football community over being a money grabber.

you aren't a professional footballer.

he would be extremely stupid not to take the money on offer. unless you can guarantee him an income stream post football, he needs as much money as he can get to make his post football life as comfortable as possible.

The players have to look after themselves, because the clubs and the AFL won't. the players are only at their club at the leisure of the clubs. as soon as the club thinks the player is of no further use, they're gone. very very few get to go on their own timetable. and while the players are there, if someone offers the right deal, the player is gone.

the AFL is a professional sport now, the clubs do what is best for them and the players would be well advised to do the same for themselves.

This isn't the normal situation where guys might get 150k extra over 3 or 4 years by changing teams. After tax it's not much.

This is major dollars, and a one time offer. No club will be able to pay him this again. He should take it. If it was cooney, I'd be gutted, but know deep down what I'd do personally.

He isn't out of contract till the end of the season, so need to hurry the process. I doubt Geelong has even made a serious offer yet, so he might be waiting to see what Geelong can get together and offer.

Its a distraction for Geelong, on that basis I don't know how you could say Geelong haven't tried to sign him.

I think he should leave. I'll still enjoy watching him play no matter which club. He has already done a lot for the club and I think its wrong any true fan to ask him to put our interests above his own.
