Alex Condon (Future Cat B Candidate?)

By mid-2024 when available to sign, he will be just turning 20yo. I don’t understand how he will have been out of the game long enough for Cat B, but I’m not good to argue!
Because you have to be out of the system for 3 years, and he stopped playing footy in 2021

Thanks, it just seems there’s a lot of projection involved in saying Condon was a potential top-five pick at the (end of) 2022 draft if he hadn’t played for nearly 18 months at the time of that draft. Odd set of circumstances.

I wouldn't be getting our hopes up as he will likely get picked up in the NBA by a minnow club.
At his size and talent they will not overlook this kid.
Mark my words.
could be right, but there are dozens of 7 foot kids coming out of Europe atm. Has he dominated junior basketball as well...??

guess he was highly rated as a 17 year old. Apparantely dominated the ruck at the U17 champs and in WAFL

NBA has a similar draft to ours. I think if he shows just a little athleticism he will get picked late in the draft.
I was reading about some 22 year old dude over there playing in a lower league. Owns a Lamborghini, BMW, Mercedes and lives in a penthouse. He is also treated like a celebrity. Alex will get drawn to this lifestyle.
The money they earn is insane.

or he realises he has no hope in a couple years.
Many soccer players do the same. They don't make it until they realise huge money is offered in countries that are minnows in the sport. See Japan, Saudis and many other countries. Even Ronaldo playing in this sort of league now.
Basketball is the same.

Alex would have to be a complete dud at Basketball to be overlooked.
$ is the drawcard once offered

Not at 6'11 and a half he wont. If he were like 7'3 or something, probably. He's nowhere near athletic enough to standout amongst all the other 6'11 prospects in both America and Europe. You can tell he runs like a big man. The level of athleticism is a completely different level. Ben Simmons is basically an inch shorter, but he runs like a guard. You also need to be able to shoot as a big in today's NBA. If he can shoot 3's at a high clip then maybe, but he'd have to be able to hold his own defensively. Andrew Bogut was one of our more athletic players as a junior, but was one of the slowest players in the NBA even pre injury, and only made his mark due to basically elite level defensive smarts which is rare.

Not sure what you mean about someone playing a "lower league". There are no lower league opportunities that makes lots of money unless you are on an NBA contract like someone designated to the G League. Players not attached to an NBA team purely on a G League contract however only make like 40k a year. The G League designated NBA player is typically still uber talented though, and if they aren't playing NBA 2-3 seasons in, they are gone, and probably playing in Europe. But even that type of player is someone who would absolutely dominate the NBL. He would basically have to have way more going for him skillset wise than simply being 6'11 and athletic for Australian standards.

Given he is aready thinking about the chance it wont happen by nominating us, there must be a real chance in his mind he wont be good enough to be drafted. Otherwise he could have considered a cat b spot after he may or may not get drafted.

Smith says: “A 202cm ruckman with elite endurance who also shows the ability to push forward and take contested marks inside 50.”

#40 Alex Condon (Claremont)
The highly touted tall prospect will have a tough decision to make within the next 12 months, representing WA at Under 18’s Basketball and winning a gold medal earlier in the year. Much like Luke Jackson before him, Condon will have options in both sports, and football fans will be hoping he chooses the Australian code. Condon was untouchable in the ruck throughout the game, using his reach, athleticism and body work to keep his opponents away from the ball. Condon’s leap is the most impressive part of his athletic profile, easily getting above his opponent and putting his knee in their chest, tapping the ball well every time to his teammates advantage, or putting it straight onto their chest. Condon did well to have an impact aerially through the game as well, taking a few marks overhead or intercept handballs to stop the SA side moving the ball easily.

#40 Alex Condon (Claremont) 201cm/78kg | 25/07/2004 | Ruck
The talented ruckman from Claremont who is also a talented basketballer, Condon showcased his great leap and deft touch in the ruck in a great contest with highly regarded SA ruckman, Will Verrall. Condon’s clear athletic traits were on display, showing that leap not only in ruck contests, but also around the ground as he flew for a nice mark to prove he could be a handy forward prospect as well. Condon has plenty of upside and with those athletic traits and with 12 disposals and 23 hitouts, he has shown to be one of the leading ruck prospects for the 2022 draft.
That’s cool and all, but those projections also had Lemmey at 4 and Keeler at 12 😬

Not sure he’s as confident of that as you are given he’s already hedging his bets.

He’s not uber-athletic, but he is co-ordinated and moves well for his size. Appears “in-proportion” at his size rather than pure beanpole.

Me likey!

He could go to Japan and make 10 x that of an AFL player.
Just saying I'm not getting my hopes up of getting him to us.

Sure, it would be great.

Agree but don't compare him with first round draft picks.

Compare him to Mason as he will cost the same if he gets picked up as a Cat B.

Say 2014 Cox vs 2024 Condon:
Age:
24yo vs 20yo
Weight: 110kg (243 lb) vs 104kg (230 lb) Todd Golden comments on Alex Condon signing with Florida Gators
Height: 211cm vs 211cm (Basketball measures with shoes on so this may be a cm or two out)
Aussie Rules History: None vs highly rated U17 player
First Game: Coxy took 2 years (2016)

I would take a 20yo Coxy with football history on our list for nothing but Cat B payment.
