Thanks Lach, Freodoc for the training reports.

First time I couldn't make it cause of work duties. Damm, not going to see anymore from now on, back at it after 6 and a half weeks off.

I've noticed Spurr hasn't been out training for the past few weeks. Maybe he is doing a weights program or something.

Great news about Neale, I can't wait to see these new guys in the NAB cup.

Interesting with Suban. It makes sense, although I am struggling to recall what he is like with short passes. All I can remember are thumping left foot bombs. Short kicking is just as important for the designated kicker, which is why Duffield was good at it. Have the drills with Suban involved both short and long kicks?

With Suban kicking in, he will more than likely have to be playing as a defender. So who is going to be playing as smalls down there? Suban, Ibbotson, Broughton, Duffield, I'll throw Spurr in ... a couple of them are going to have to move up the ground (or play WAFL).

I was really hoping Suban would develop more as a midfielder this year. He's shown some good signs in there before when not injured and in form. Hopefully is role can be more comparable to Brett Delidio's rather than a back pocket who takes kick-outs.

I was too hoping he would develop into a mid as I think he is a good running player. I wouldn't want him to be a shut down player, thou he may do a good job at it. Who really knows what his role is going to be down back. Not long till NAB cup.

On the other his kicking most of the time has been good out of defence. I'm sure Ross will have a couple of options at DK and he will be one of them. I think Duff will still kick in a fair bit too.

What are people's thoughts on Mellington? He doesn't get talked about much. I saw him a bit last year in the WAFL and he looked like a pretty dangerous goal sneak.

Hi Underdog, I watched him in a couple of games last year for WP and he played really well. In one game against Peel I would have given him equal best with Andrew Strijk.

Mello kicked 5 goals and assisted in some good passages of play. Apparently he went quiet in a number of games as reported by Loyd in Feo's WAFL watch.

IMO he has trained really well and looks solid this year and woud be handy for Freo if he could step up as we need to strengthen our forward line. I'm sure if he could perform in the NAB cup or string a number of good games in he might get a gig.:thumbsu:

Did he at St Kilda? I think if you have someone really good at kick-ins then mostly stick to it.

Freo has been weak from kick-ins for a long time, definitely needs improvement. The price of one mistake is very high and having one good option is not enough. When Duff hasn't kicked in it has been a bit of a lottery as to who will kick and how it will turn out.

Full agree, and the other problem we have had is a pretty easily identified strategy of kicking it to Sandilands most of the time. Got to have a few decent options, and somebody smart enough to make the decision, and skillful enough to execute it.

The other big problem we have had is that in the past, the second preferred kick-in options for us (notably MJ and Parker) have killed us with errors. With Suban and Duff I would feel much more confident.

I agree with both of these comments. Also Suban as a DK is unknown untill we have played a few games. I hope he is a great fit.

I was reading in the 'Which young docker will have a breakout year' thread that alot of people were nominating Pitt. It was a bit surprising considering his name didn't pop up much in the pre-season thread, if it did it was a simple 'slick' or 'good'. Any more in depth analysis on how he's tracking?

I rate him highly. Very hard at it for a goal sneak.

Slightly off topic here (by a fair margin actually), but it's free entry to the cricket tomorrow, so I fully expect to see pics of Chris and Braedy in their Freo gear letting the Indians know about the 4-0 whitewash.

Im glad Suban is taking over. Anyone but Ibbo how painful is it to watch makes me feel so nervous the same feeling i get with mcphee 30m out directly in front of goal.........

I actually think Mcphee has been fairly accurate infront of goal, at least more so than some of our other players.

Well he's a high draft pick with a good pedigree. was projected as a possible top 10 based on his skill set and his upside which is perceived to be high. Came into the draft with the body of a boy which perhaps resulted in him dropping a bit. We took him ahead of Darling who was ready to go. Bond said at the time he thought we had enough ready to go players and hence could afford to take someone like Pitty who needs developing. His clean skills on show in last years pre-season and his obvious football intelligence saw him debut in Round 1 and he perhaps was a little overawed at times in the big show where his biggest asset of clean precise kicking deserted him at times.
After a full pre-season and putting on some much needed muscle there are those of us that believe he will start to show some of that pedigree on the big stage. His obvious assets are his ball handling, which is clean, his foot skills (he is almost completely dual sided and highly accurate) and perhaps most of all his football brain. He projects as a thoughtful intelligent young man and has similar attributes to Mundy in appearing to play the game in a different time zone to a lot of others. By that I mean he appears always to have time with the ball and seems to think faster than others resulting in good decisions being made under pressure.
While he doesn't necessarily stand out at training he fits in well and just does his bit when it's his turn. My belief is he'll end up a sort of Andrew Mackie type that can take a mark overhead, zone off and use his intelligence to beat an opponent with better positioning and game sense. His superior foot skills will see him set up attacking play from half back. He's not going to be a star in the Fyfe / Hill mode but he will be reliable & play a role.
That's my take on it.

Yeah agreed. I'd rather Mcphee take a set shot than Ibbo take the kick in.

Put Ibbo on the wing or HB (if available) and get McPhee upfront crashing packs and kicking goals.

That's pretty generous based on what he actually produced last year IMO. I don't see the Mundy comparison yet at all, but that's just based on his actual games, in which I would say he was particularly average.
I'm hoping the 10kg he's put on and a proper preseason means we see your version of Pitt start to emerge.

he showed against one of the adelaide teams, port i think, that he can be better than average. did very well but faded in the 4th quarter IIRC. sure it was port, but he was a stick insect. if he's added 10 kegs, then he'll impose himself in more games.

Yeah it's mostly based on what I've seen at training and what he showed in pre-season last year in the lesser tempo of those games. I think he can do it in the real thing when he's up to weight and speed.

The Mundy projection is just hope. He'll be closer to Ibbotson.
