Thinking about it, we could easily accomodate ROK needs and fit him in our cap.

  • By the time Juddy's contract runs out, he will almost be considered a veteran and his contracts from then on won't be too hefty.
  • Fevola will be a veteran in a couple years which means a lot of his salary will be out of the cap which will free up a lot of room.
  • Stevens too will also be considered a veteran in 3 or so years time.
  • Ackland who is on 300k a year will be gone for good next year which will save us a lot.
  • Murphy Gibbs and Kreuzer who all have recently signed 2 -4 year deals won't be asking for too much more for a while and these are players that I know as a fact will not walk out of the club to seek more money.
  • Because our list is so young, there are plenty of players who aren't being payed that much in comparison to other clubs.
Besides Judd, Fevola, Stevens and now Warnock, I can't think of anyone else on heavy salary's? :thumbsu:

WELCOME TO CARLTON RYAN O'KEEFE

No you must play for 10 years AT THE SAME CLUB and be at least 30 years of age before seasons end to qualify for the veterans list. It doesn't matter how many years judd and stevens played at other clubs that doesn't count.

Judd would have to play for 9 more years at carlton to qualify for the veterans list under the current rules. Stevens would have to play another 5 seasons.

Fev will be eligible in 2011.

Wrong. You can have as many as you like but the % not counted under the cap decreases for each one.

For example - Veteran 1 50%, Veteran 2 40% and so on.
No. 1 veteran = 50%

2 veterans = 50% (each)

3 veterans = 33%

4 veterans = 25%

I might add that the veteran's list is undergoing review over this offseason. Two motions are being put forward:

1. Make it ten years service without having to be 30 years old.
2. 30 years old regardless of what club. Encourages veterans to get picked up and stay in the game longer.

One of these is expected to be implemented.

If it is the first one, then Fev is eligible for the veteran's list immediately. If it is the second one, Fev, Stevens and Scotland are eligible in a couple of years and Judd will be on the list in his late 20s.

Juddy is still quite young so if anything it'll be Fev and Stevo for the veterans list it'll still be only 2 in a season.

Judds contract was heavily front loaded, which means quite a portion of his overall contract was paid to him in 2008. Carlton have been very smart in the way they have done this - they have also heavily backended Marc Murphy's contract as well, so we can get the maximum benefit for having as many good players on our list at any one time.

If O'Keefe nominates for the PSD, it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Would Freo or Weagleland seriously consider picking him up on a large contract if he didn't want to play for them? In theory they could, but it wouldn't make sense. Essendon seem to be the frontrunners, and if they can convince him to play for them, they should get across the line. A lot will depend on how badly he wants to play for the Blues, or whether his priority is to just play for a larger Vic Club, in which case the Dons would be OK. But if he is insistent on the Blues and tells the Dons he doesn't want to play for them, would they still pick him up in the PSD on a large contract against his wishes? Not sure. :)

Yes, as it stands right now, Fevola will be the only veteran on our list in a few years

He wants to play for a team pushing for a premiership

If he thinks or Essendon can convince him that they are in this position then I'm sure he will be happy to go there

If we get O'Keefe and draft Hurley, we could make the top 8.

FB: Carrazzo Thornton Hurley

HB: Jamison Waite Scotland

C: Gibbs Stevens Simpson

HF: Walker Krezuer O'Keefe

FF: Fisher Fevola Betts

RR: Warnock Judd Murphy

Bench: Cloke, Bower, Hadley, Grigg

The thing is no-one has to convinve him of anything.

If he wants to play for a club other than Sydney next year, he goes to the first one to take him.

We will not get him.

Melbourne can't afford him
Eagles and Freo won't take a player who is leaving to go home to victoria given they have just lost important players for the same reason
Port want Carr

Sydney, Essendon and Carlton are the only realistic chances

forgive me, but i didnt understand what you meant here...

Right.

So why would Essendon pass on him?

We won't get him.;)

This is the key hypothetical situation. Lets assume O'Keefe nominates for the PSD, and tells Essendon he only wants to play for the Blues. Assuming the Dons can fit him in their salary cap, what would Essendon do? Would they take him against his wishes, and pay his large contract? I'm just not sure on this one. :)

A lot of "ifs" there.

The only thing we can hope is that of the clubs ahead of us (including Port, who WOULD take him against his wishes IMO), that none of them think the investmenbt is worthwhile, and that they won't be pushing for finals in the next 4 years.

IMO, the Dons will believe that they have two years left of Lloyd, Lucas, maybe Flecther.....and that ROK may present good value.

They might just take him so that we don't.

Add ROK to our lineup and things may change quite significantly in the next two years.

Right.

So why would Essendon pass on him?

That will be the question that will determine where he goes

If ROK says to Essendon I don't want to go to you guys......can you pass on me in the PSD then we will get him

But if Ess say no we want you and will pay you what you want then ROK has a decision to make

Sydney or Essendon

Simple as that

Yeah seems ROK will be having discussions with a few clubs in the next few days to decide his future,I for one hope it's a BLUE future.
If he wants to clome to the Blues and other teams will hinder his choice i think he'll remain a Swan.
I read somewhere today he was going to decide by Wednesday so time will tell i guess.

FWIW I reckon Port Adelaide would have to 'balls' to draft him VIA the PSD ...
And you doubt they have them?

Chocco could do it IMO.

Unlikely, but possible.

Right.

So why would Essendon pass on him?

We won't get him.;)

I can't see Essendon taking him....

It is totally against their new youth policy under Knights as they have moved on most of their old players except for Lloyd, Lucas (who only got a 1 year contract) and Fletcher. And those three will probably be gone in 1-2 years.

I just can't see why Essendon would take him, they are further away from a premiership then us, considering the recent retirements and the players that will go in the next 1-2 years and O'Keefe wants to go to a team in Victoria that is going to be challenging in the next 2-3 years, which we will. Essendon would be about 4-5 years away as their key position players are a couple years behind ours.

I've said this numerous times on this thread, a team will not pick a player that doesn't want to go to their club.

The clubs in front of us:
- Melb: building through the draft so wouldn't want O'Keefe and it seems no one actually wants to go there (eg. Warnock and Prismall)
- WCE: Similar to Melbourne and O'Keefe would prefer to stay in Sydney then go to Perth
- Freo: Again building through the draft and who know if they actually have room in their cap, and in Perth
- Port: taking Josh Carr, hence can't take O'Keefe
- Ess: See above, would have to go against everything they have been doing for the last 12-18 months under Knights which would be a massive step backwards in their development. I would be very suprised if he ended up at Essendon, considering they had no interest him in trade week.
- Car: take him in straight away

Overall, I can only see him being at Sydney or Carlton next year. Essendon haven't traded in any big guns recently and I have said it is against their youth policy and he has only expressed interest in Hawthorn and Carlton. Also remember everyone that Carlton has said they are going after we have got, Chris Judd has amazing pulling powers.......

Lets just hope Sydney doesn't convince him to stay:)

Essendon's youth policy?

That was quick. I thought KNights was appointed because he believed that current list was in good order and not that far away from a flag.

I think you could be surprised.

Right.

Bear, with all due respect, I'm starting to notice a recurring pattern of 'expect nothing and never be disappointed' sentiment in your opinion.

I sincerely hope that this is only symptomatic of the our recent history and look forward to your developing the arrogance side of your game and really cutting down on being reasonable, it's very unCarlton-like (and hence bad for football).

I'll give you an example:

That will be the question that will determine where he goes

If ROK says to Essendon I don't want to go to you guys......can you pass on me in the PSD then we will get him

But if Ess say no we want you and will pay you what you want then ROK has a decision to make

So his 2 most likely outcomes entail him having to play with a team he doesn't want to be at and all his teammates know it (and in the Sydney scenario they also resent him wanting out to begin with).

The sacrifices that the genuine stars of our game make even just for a remote chance to have the honour of donning the covetted Navy Blue never amazes me, as it is the natural order, but I it should still be highlighted so that yet again, those other 15 clubs making up the numbers in the competition can be reminded what this game is all about:

Carlton!
