Obviously a few picks will change hands on draft night due to live trading and picks will move down depending where bids come.

Who should your club target with its first pick/early picks

Part 2

Gold Coast: The suns probably will only take 1 live pick at the draft, as they have the ability to pre list Davies and Jeffery. Do they use 27 and 37 to try and trade up higher, or trade back and potentially grab a future pick from the team trying to get high up the order. If they retain pick 5 they'll go best available mid imo and that will most likely mean either Phillips or Bruhn who will add to their impressive young midfield.

GWS: With 4 lateish 1st round picks the giants will be trying to trade up to grab a stud in the top 10. This is an important draft for the giants, who have drafted poorly in recent years, wasting 1st round picks on midfielders when they are already stacked in that area of the ground. With their early picks this year they should be looking to add talent in other areas of the ground with guys that play specialist roles and can add something to their team almost immediately. Henry is one guy that should be looking at, he can play at either end of the ground as a medium marking tall and would slot nicely into their 22. Ginnivan is another guy they could target with one of their later 1st round picks, a goal kicking small forward who can play midfield with high football iq and would bring something different in the giants forward 50. The giants main aim will be trying to trade up, where i feel theyll be targetting either Reid or Cox. Davis is ageing and doesnt have long left and Corr is gone, they need to get some young key defenders coming through to accompany Sam Taylor .

Hawthorn: Its the first time the hawks have a top 10 pick in over a decade, a few clubs will be looking to try and trade up with the hawks, but they'd be better served keeping the pick because they'll be landing a gun. The hawks most likely take who ever slips through to 4 out of Thilthorpe, Mcdonald, DGB and Hollands, at the moment those 4 could go in any order inside the top 4, i wouldnt be surprised if it ends up being Hollands. He'll be a great fit at hawthorn adding something different as a dynamic big bodied midfielder, who can also go forward and be a threat inside 50. Clarko loves players who can kick and Hollands ticks that box, he could almost be considered ambidextrous as he can kick 60m on his right and 50 on his left.

North Melbourne: It all depends on what Adelaide does with pick 1. If the crows pick Thilthorpe, theyll be quick to call out Mcdonald's name. If the crows pick Mcdonald, do north take Thilthorpe? Im not so sure they will, i think its highly likely they could select Hollands if that happens. North are crying out for a key forward and after moving ben brown out of the club, taking Mcdonald makes sense. Larkey needs some support and bringing in Mcdonald would give them two targets to build their future around.

Melbourne: Some clever trading during trade week allowed melbourne to re enter the 1st round of the draft after trading out their future 1st for 18 & 19. Pace, kicking ability and x-factor will be on their shopping list. Dont be surprised if they place a bid on B.Walker (fremantle NGA), the dees need someone with line breaking ability from back half, who also uses the ball well. Walker is exactly that and there isnt many in this draft who offer that (go and watch performance for australia as a 17yo). Theyll also be looking to add some more goal scoring power in their forward line, theyll be looking at Cook but he might be already off the board at their selection. Poulter is another one they could take, someone who can go forward and kick goals but is also very versatile in the roles he can play. He is also a lovely user of the ball and thats something melbourne currently lack - especially kicking into the forward 50.

Port Adelaide: This is a pretty simple selection, theyll be matching any bid on their NGA member Jones. Theyll hope the bid comes later in the first round, but dont be surprised if essendon bid on him with one of their top 10 selections. His body is made for senior footy and he'll be ready to play round 1 next year. Once he builds his tank think he ends up as a bid body midfielder, as he has the athletic profile to do so.

Who should your club target with its first pick/ early picks

Part 3

Geelong: After landing Jeremy Cameron and giving up their 3 first round draft picks, their first pick is currently at 51. That will push into the 40s after matched academy selections, but theyll also look to use the 2nd rounders part the cameron deal to land a player in the higher up in the draft. Unfortunately theyll miss out on the highly rate Falcon boys, but a midfielder such as Zavier Maher would be high on their radar. He likes to get in and under at the contest and has great burst speed from the stoppage. Theyll also be looking at landing a ruckman to develop, Neale would be a great selection but he could be gone by their selection. A player like Heath would be great for Geelong, a physical ruckman who isnt afraid throw his weight around and be the leader of the midfield brigade.

Richmond: Its hard to assess what the tigers really need at their first pick with their list in such a great position, with depth on every line. With Cotchin closer to the end than the start, they could use another contested ball winner inside. A player like Berry could be seen as a replacement. He's a tough nut, but also possesses great agility and endurance - which is needed in the Richmond system.

St Kilda: The busy players of the last 2 trade periods have seen the saints and a lot of pieces to their side. They are probably short 1 key defender, but unfortunately for them DGB, Cox, Reid and Chapman will be off the board by their first pick. They could look to add some x-factor to their forward half/ midfield, a player like Ford could be that guy. Dangerous around stoppages, a threat in the air and lovely hands in close. Ford is a great size and if he develops in a dynamic midfielder who rests forward, he could be a great addition to the saints team and add a point of difference to their midfield.

Sydney: The swans will get the very talented Campbell via their academy, but they are desperate to replenish their tall stocks at either end of the ground. They'd love either Thilthorpe or Mcdonald to fall into their laps at 3 as they need a successor to Buddy after Daniher chose to move to the lions instead. At the other end the ground they dont have much on the shelf either. Often Rampe is called upon to play on guys much bigger than himself and Aliir just left the club. A player like Grainger-barras would suit Sydney perfectly, he's an ultimate professional, extremely athletic, has great football iq and a great pair of hands. He would be high on the board for the swans and could the leader of the swans backline for the next decade and a worthy selection at 3.

Western Bulldogs: Well this one is simple, they will be matching a bid for Ugle-hagan where ever it comes. It's not everyday a club gets free access to a potential generational player. The bulldogs will just hope the bid comes at 2-3 so it doesnt wipe out their entire draft.

West Coast: With all their draft picks wiped out because of the Tim Kelly trade last season, their first selection stands at 62. Theyll look at trading into the draft earlier on draft night. They need some young midfield depth coming through and could look to a player like Trew if he slides on draft night. The eagles also love quality ball users coming out of defence, with Jetta gone and Sheppard/ Hurn almost at the end, they could find value in the classy half back out of Sturt, Carruthers. He rarely wastes a possession, is a lovely kick of the footy and would fit into their system perfectly.

Thanks for your assessments I've enjoyed reading them.

Just on Richmond, the midfield has probably the most depth of any line with RCD, Ross, Bolton, Dow, Martyn, Graham and maybe Cumberland all under 21. Where we are lacking is in the KPP stocks with only Garthwaite and Miller defensively and Coleman-Jones in attack who's more a ruck/forward.

With that in mind, do you see any prospects in KPP's that could be best 22 for the Tigers in a couple of years time? Someone like Balta would be awesome, do you see anyone with similar traits who might be available at our 1st selection?

Oh, with the Doggies, do they lose those picks used on matching a JUH bid or are they moved to the back of the draft?

Just finished watching the metro boys go through their paces up at high gate. A lot of boys have really filled out and look like senior footballers already.
- Cox is looking massive and moved really well.
- McMahon looked good clean hands, hardly missed a kick.
- Brand has put on a fair bit of size.
- Perkins just glided through the drills, skills were elite.
- Ford looked in ripping nick, so strong through the core with tree stump legs (went h2h with McMahon in the marking drill)
- Eyre just springs off the ground whenever he flys for a mark, impressive unit.
- McInnes looked in imposing shape and used the ball well.

Was a stock standard session, 4 groups rotating through 4 main drills. Country boys were to follow but I Couldn’t stay unfortunately, wanted to see JUH and Reid in action.

My final rankings will be out tomorrow night.

Thanks a bunch for that.

Not of Baltas similar traits, I rated balta top 15 in his draft year and was surprised he slid so far. It’s hard to know what Richmond will do, will they reach a bit on someone who they want in their system (like they did they dow) or will they take best available. Someone I wouldn’t discount for the tigers someone like Poulter and Richmond playing him on a wing.

Alright here it is!

My Final rankings of 2020, a year like no other.

A bit of movement after watching a heap of footage over the past couple of weeks. There were a few developing key position players that are stiff to miss out but i felt i didnt have enough confidence in them, due to their lack of runs on the board in 2019. Realistically, after 10 or so, kids could end up anywhere on draft night and i expect the order to be totally unexpected with a heap of shocks due to clubs having very different views on a lot of players.

My final Phantom draft will be out Monday night. Feel free to ask any questions on the rankings below, Enjoy.

Some have Finlay Macrae going earlier but I tend to agree with you and ED on what I saw last year. I think he'll no doubt be a best 22 type midfielder but apart from his kicking nothing has really stood out that sets him apart from some others. Do you think his name perhaps sees him rated higher by some?

I think his name gets him more hype in the media than others, but that doesn’t matter on recruiters eyes. I think he’s a solid player but doesn’t have any really outstanding qualities for me and needed to show his ability to play inside this year.

Twomey rates him higher than Jack at the same age and Jack went at pick 6 to the dogs

Twomey said he was more advanced at the same age as jack(who was a late bloomer) does not mean he’s got the same ceiling as jack. Also helps that Jack is 192cm
I dont really think Jack uses his height as much as a 191cm player would normally but Jack was 188cm when drafted and Fin is 185cm now so could also grow
dont think 3-4 cm makes that much difference. Its if he develops his game similar to his brother

You haven't got ? L.Kolar in your top 50. If the Saints want to go tall, reckon he's the one they may take with their 1st pick. But, would be great if he slid out to our 2nd pick. And I reckon B.Laurie will go earlier. And why have you got Alex Davies & Joel Jeffrey their, aren't they? pre-listed.

Kolar has athletic traits but in my opinion he didn’t show enough last year to be top 50 worthy, as I mentioned in my post their were a few tall forward prospects who didn’t make it due to the lack of runs on the board Rosman, Allison, Kolar etc. Davies and Jefferies are listed because those are my rankings it’s not a phantom draft. My phantom draft will come out tonight.

Eddie Ford is definitely the steal of the draft, if he finds consistency he’ll put bums on seats for norf
It feels like Curtis Taylor all over again.

Very happy with Curtis before he got injured. Hoping Ford shows something similar. Seems to be a more reliable and less injury prone version of Taylor Garner.
