Vlad! Can you here me?

Reward the bottom sides with less than 18 points with a priority pick AFTER the first round, no matter how many years in a row they finish at the bottom of the ladder. That way they get a little extra hand but the incentive in the end is not strong enough to want to win a spoon or finish that low.

JUST DO IT NOW!

Dean Bailey looked like his was genuinely unhappy when he left his seat at the end. Why couldn't he wait another 20 seconds to see the end of the game, send one more directive to his players etc etc?

IT IS A BLIGHT ON THE GAME. DO IT NOW! EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY!

Everybody wants to see their side win. Some demon supporters were celebrating the loss! It's JUST NOT FOOTBALL!

There needs to be a lottery for the bottom sides. I honestly hope Melbourne get the 1st pick and the priority pick. I agree with you, it is a farcical situation but one which the AFL have created. I'm not sure if those supporters were celebrating the loss but probably celebrating that we are one step closer to getting some great picks. The AFL have made it clear that it is totally acceptable to tank. The problem will be fixed when AFL coaches and clubs come out and say we have tanked and this is how we did it. The AFL would have no choice but to fix it. At the moment no one involved in any clubs say that they do it when every man and their dog know they put a second rate team out on the field. Who the hell would want to give up a priority pick. You would have to be nuts.

Demetriou, pull your head out of the sand, its no good for the game, get rid of it. Listen to the supporters of this great game, instead of us talking about the great football we talking about this utter crap.

To be honest, the coach can do little when there are 20 seconds to go and the ball's locked up in the opposition forward line.

The system is terrible.

I'd prefer to just remove the PP completely but having it at the end of round 1 would be okay probably.

To be honest, I have no problem with the priority pick system. What I do have a problem with is requiring less than 20 points to qualify. It is too many.

I would reduce the qualification/cut off to 12 points (3 wins). If you can't win that many, then yes you should be entitled to it. Generally, at least the first half of the season, tanking/priority picks is a non-issue and clubs are doing everything to win. Clubs suffer too much if they can't win at least 3 games.

Up until this round we had 5 teams who still qualified and thanks to Richmond and West Coast, that has shrunk to 3. Under the system I suggested, no team would qualify this year as Melbourne has already won/accumulated 3 wins and looking at the last two years (07-08), no priority picks would have been awarded as Richmond 07 and Melbourne 08 both won 3 games for the year.

Because of the priority pick it turned the Richmond vs Melbourne game into a farce today. To put it simply I could not get excited about this win, it is hard to get excited about a win when the opposition is trying to lose the game. We were terrible today and if it wasn't for Bailey making obviuos tanking moves of playing players out of position Melbourne would have won by five goals due to us playing that badly.

I must admit that a part of me didn't want McMahon to kick that goal. Not for Richmond to tank, but because I don't want to celebrate a victory due to the opposition trying to lose the game and we didn't deserve to win with how we played.

I agree axe the pre draft priority pick. Gun key forwards are rare enough in the game, awarding a team with two at the start of a draft because they tanked a season is not fair on teams who work hard for success and coaches who coach to win.

Yeah let's ban the priority pick but just for fun, make the ban retroactive - all these players should be forced into the pre-season draft this year...

Matthew Kruezer, Marc Murphy, Dale Thomas, Xavier Ellis, Brett Deledio, Jarryd Roughead, Ryan Griffen, Adam Cooney, Andrew Walker, Colin Sylvia, Luke Hodge, Luke Ball, Chris Judd, Nick Riewoldt, Josh Fraser, Paul Hasleby.

technically the players taken with the clubs next pick following would be the one's up for grabs as they obviously would have still taken those players listed above if they only had one pick

;)

While we're on the topic of being fair let's ban father/son selections as well

the competition is now a joke.

the party line being trotted out by the AFL CEO is now embarrassingly out of touch with reality.

the CEO is appointed by the commission and the commission is appointed by the clubs. the telstra board made a mistake by appointing a CEO to pursue a combative strategy that was doomed from the start. they eventually removed the CEO and the chairman.

it appears that all the clubs and coaches are united in their opposition to the current bogus system. I can't recall a club official coming out in support of the PP this year. if demetriou won't budge on this, the clubs should demand that he is dismissed and if the commission won't do it, then the clubs should remove the commission.

I am all for this.

Interesting that Sylvia was dropped to top up the PP. Addictive isnt it.

All this crap for one player!!! I think alot of us a reading to much into this tanking rubbish, a win for a club is far more crucial than the prospect of a draftee than may become a failure.

West Coast proved that they aren't tanking, if it wasn't for a goal after the siren the issue would almost be dead and burried for season 2009.

It isn't the fact that Richmond won last week and West Coast won last week. To me its just the negative public perception that comes along with playing poorly. Whether tanking exists or not is besides the point. Its not a good image of the game when the public/people are talking about 'tanking'.

And it will still continue until the priority picks and draft is relooked again.

Shocking system and needs to be scrapped at years end.

However Dean Bailey is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Melbourne win 2 games, including beating a top 8 side in Port and all the media jump on the band wagon that we should not, can't, must not win anymore than 4 games.

We then lose to Richmond and the same people criticise the tactics used yesterday. It is a shocking system and the AFL need to have a good hard look at themselves.

It really was a horrible day yesterday. I got caught up in the emotion of young players like Grimes, Pettard etc dragging us back into the game and then was left not knowing what to feel when we lose after the siren. Was pissed off when it went in, but 3 minutes later thought well at least we will probably get a priority pick.

Not how it is supposed to be. Not sure if I will or can watch any more games this year to be honest. Just a horrible situation and completely avoidable

your avatar describes the AFL's approach on this, and just about any other issue in the game, quite appropriately Bails.

while people continue to be dumb enough to attend matches, click on the official websites, add to broadcast audience members, etc, thus helping the AFL to meet and beat budgets and forecasts, then there isnt a problem from their point of view.

the AFL is the most farcical elite sporting comp on the planet!
