Still think its a moot point. If he wants to go matching won't keep him it will just force a trade scenario.

To be fair, Smith wasn't drafted until the year he turned 22. By the time he was 23 he was a best 22 player in a team that won 18 games. At the same age Hartung played 13 in a team that finished 9th and was de-listed.

Who am I to say that Hartung won't play in the next 4 Grand Finals? He might...

It's funny, if you go back to the start of the thread people were arguing over whether or not he was worth $800k and offering picks in the 20s for a trade. A bit of hype around yet another silly North offer and now people are convinced he'll walk if we don't pay him $1.2m.

Now the salary cap has increased but it hasn't gone up 50% from 2017 to 2018. Gaff is a very good footballer but he's not the sort of guy you pay $1.2m a year to just to retain. That's the sort of money you offer if you think he might be a chance of leaving and you want to sway him to entertain joining your club. Like us supposedly offering Tim Kelly $500k, $600k, $700k or whatever today's figure is. You reckon he'll get that if he re-signs with the Cats next year? Doubt it. It's all gamesmanship.

Also if BigFooty is to be believed, in order to re-sign McGovern, Gaff and Lycett we'll be forking out around $3m a year leaving us about 3/4 of the cap to pay the rest of the list. Given we've already signed up Shuey, Yeo, Darling, Kennedy, Hurn, Naitanui, Redden, Jetta... that doesn't leave a lot to go around.

Well if de goey is worth 700k then gaff at least 1 mil. He happens to b in his prime, proven over the years to consistent and reliable on and off the field.
