THE Carlton Football Club can confirm that after 26 years within the AFL industry, Director of High Performance Andrew Russell will step away from football at the conclusion of the 2024 AFL season.

Following six seasons at the Blues, in which time he led high performance, Russell will conclude his time at the Club, with his current contract set to expire at season’s end.

Agreed. Cerra was clearly our best mid for the first half of 2023. He alone will make a huge difference if he can stay fit.

TDK, Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Jagga, Lord, Hewett - matches up with the best in the league for depth and talent. I'd argue it is the best midfield in the league. Just got to keep them on the park.

The dream!

Agree. to a certain extent...

I think the Lions bat deeper with the added Ashcroft and more importantly they have the pinch hitters that go through the midfields that can change a game. We lack that...

Our biggest point of difference is TDK, he's the one we need to protect, full stop...

Be interesting to see if Levi Ashcroft is selected in Brissy's best 22, or will he be expected to develop in the 2's despite being a contender for pick 1 in this years draft.

This is true, many clubs leave key messaging printed around the changeroom/ medical rooms to keep players on script from week to week.

Players thought he was nuts. Very few were sold on him from the very start.

Interestingly, club went out of their way to tell the players to talk him up more than usual in the media if questions were asked.

There is no 'fall guy' or 'scapegoat'. He might've been great at Hawthorn but was poor for our playing group, which is why he was sacked. It's literally the same scenario as when we got Buttifant.

Not saying you are wrong but I have never heard anything close to this

Well if Neale drops off a bit (32 next year) I think they're well down the pecking order I think.

Zorko even moreso IMO - 36 by the time the season starts and he was critical for them this year.
The team was 18-1-8 across the season, and in games where Zorko had 25+ touches they were 14-1-3

It's why AFL media is so ****ing boring.

Nothing interesting ever gets said, ever. But more media keeps appearing. Incredible business really.
Half of the journos work for the AFL directly and the others are acredited, cowed and know there's someone else who wants the job so rarely take risks.
when you add that to a 24 hour news cycle to fill you get more and more lukewarm 'approved opinion'.

If it’s true about Russell and how poor he was for us then we are about to see a huge rise in performance of our club. If it looks similar then we know it had nothing to do with him. I’m a firm
Believer Russell was not the right guy after about 4/5 years with us. Leadership was his strength and mental conditioning but the fitness side of stuff was poor. He changed too many things too often and although he could fix long term injury issues he had no idea about building strength and unity prevention
