Analysis Another Theory For Our Poor Form

I think it goes further than just "winning" contested possessions.
It is what we are doing with those possessions?
As is all over this board at the moment, our disposal under pressure is just so bad.
Which is why no matter how much the boys get fired up and "go in hard", if they just burn the ball immediately after getting it. What is the point.
Then heads start to drop and the game is gone.

For some teams it does. Hawthorn regularly lose contested possession but win through pressure causing turn overs and elite disposal rarely giving up turn overs (although, strangely, not against us). But we ain't Hawthorn. We rarely lose when we win contested possession and we rarely win when we don't. There are some games where junk time stats cause a reversal of this but in the main, for us, the contested possession rule holds true.

There may be a million reasons for this- being too offensive when spreading from a clearance, structures etc. But why try to fix a million things when we know fixing one thing (contested possession) turns us from chumps to champs? There simply is no reason with Boak, R.Gray, Hartlett, Wines, Wingard, S.Gray, Polec and Ebert to use around the stoppages, we should be losing contested possessions.

Can we stop trying to pin the current malaise on one reason? There is a combination of issues: coaching, structure, motivation, desire, cohesion. It's a complete cluster**** at the moment, and isn't as simple as resolving one aspect of our game or list.

Just a thought. And I honestly hope I am so wrong that it's not funny.

In 2013-2014 (heck even 2015) we had players like Wines, Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Wingard all playing out of their skin. Could it be that they were playing to get that heavy and long-term contract/contract extension?

Now that we have signed up pretty much all these guys, they seem to be happy to go out kick a ball around and not hurt themselves because they're guaranteed to get the cash they've signed for.

Hell, Kenny even got an extension, which is flipping beyond me as to why. I mean I love Ken, but he's nothing without Richo or Walshy! It seems like he got his fat contract and now he couldn't give a stuff either.

Every thing is about money these days so it's not totally inconceivable, i suppose ken had to move his whole family over hear so the future is paramount to him and the same would apply for some players.

Absolutely wrong from what Bassett has said, the coaches are working long hard hours to try to turn this around.

Nothing about Ken Hinkley suggests to me that "he couldn't give a stuff". The coach is hurting, and I'm quite sure that he's doing everything humanly possible to turn our form around.

i dont put it down to effort at all. i put it down to woeful structures and game plan. The players would most likely be seeing this too and are probably getting sick to death of taking the heat for it. So when you see them with a pissed off look on their face, its most likely no different to how yours would be if you were standing on the edge of a blow hole being told to take a piss without it splashing your face!!

Our skills when getting tackled are poor. Other good sides stand up and brace in the tackle and lift their arm to get the ball clear. They are able to dispose to advantage despite the tackle, fend off or break the tackle. Our guys fall forward to try and get their arms free but end up getting pinned down and the play stops.

Lobbe is not great but he is playing his role to his ability, it is when the ball hits the ground and 98% of the time our mid field is not there, or if they get it they cough it up, the structures are breaking down (look at our clearance rate).

Another theory or just another excuse for these boys? Structure and method is breaking down in areas for our team and the onus is on the coaches to fix that, but there should be no excuse for the players not putting there bodies on the line to win the contested footy.
Its hard to fix structure when your full back, full forward,CHB and first ruck are on the outer.

So now Clarkson's got his extension Hawthorn will go down the tubes as well? Players and coaches will keep up the same whether signed to a contract or not. Apart from the loss of form of our major players, four of them rubbed out or LTI, the affect of regularly losing assistant coaches, we are now seeing what happens when you have traded away your future and your second-tier players are all low draft picks.
