Re: Round 9 - St Kilda vs Melbourne @ Etihad Stadium

Some posters seem to think we still have Grant Thomas as coach.

If you remember back then - he was the one man band - he took responsibility for several roles and was too busy to do any of them justice.

The club sacked Thomas and brought in professional personnel to fill the roles that required more specialist skills. One of those specialists was a new coach (Ross Lyon).

St Kilda have a General Manager of the Football department, a head coach, 4 assistant coaches, a development manager, a teaching and development coach, a player development manager, an elite performance manager, a strength and conditioning coach, a head trainer, medical staff, physiotherapists, a whole recruiting department, and several other executive, administrative personnel and technology officers.

Lyon is a very senior part of the football department but he does not make all the decisions by himself. The selection committee collates all the available information, discusses and decides in a professional and scientific manner on what changes (if any) are best for the club. I have faith in their professionalism and in the long term I expect it will produce the results we expect.

There are reasons why certain players are not considered ready while others are given the green light.

My boss doesn't publish my professional shortcomings and strengths on a weekly basis, the same applies to these professional footballers. The in-house discussions remain in-house as a courtesy to the players. Just because we don't hear all the reasons does not mean that there are none behind decisions like the McEvoy resting / Blake cover.

A player like Blake is a godsend for coaches. He can do just about everything out on the field. He is not great at any one thing, but he can play a role quite well and that allows the team to function much better than if he didn't play that role.

Re: Round 9 - St Kilda vs Melbourne @ Etihad Stadium

you seem to be misled. football clubs are not perfect, you put too much faith in them my friend. i'm afraid you need to wake up and realise the reality of what actually occurs. Ross has lost assistant coaches due to the simple fact they think he is a arseh*le (excuse my french), and he ALONE makes the final decision at the selection table, even if others occasionally have a say (unlikely). if you think our selections in the past two years at the selection table have been in the best interest of the club, once again you are blind. While contending for a flag, it is important to continue youth development. Ross Lyon is a serial offender at not doing this, and at the moment it is hurting the club, and dont tell me we had to focus on a flag, geelong managed to do it. and a bit of competition for spots may have got us the premiership, as that boosts performance, instead of players knowing ross will play them as long as they get 5 tackles.
You are the one making assumptions. Where is your evidence? Your opinion simply doesn't cut it.

and on GT, he made the list strong, ross added a few matures. Also you dont think GT had a physio etc? you went a bit silly naming every role at the football club, so your saying GT was the physio was he? your actual point of the post is so muddled it cannot be derived, maybe GT should have hired more cleaners so he didnt have to be the cleaner to, coz according to you he did everything?

Your straw man arguments do not stand up to scrutiny. I stated cold hard facts. These facts do not sit with your opinion so your response is this? Do you think that by creating exaggerated ridiculous misinterpretations of my statements you can win this argument. The facts have not changed. Facts are facts. Come back when you have something concrete to offer.

Utility/Nexus,

IF THOMAS WAS SUCH A GENIUS.. then why did we have so many soft tissue injuries when he was at the helm?

Oh that's right, there was a weights related issue that was picked up by ross the boss after an audit in the first few weeks.
The lack of delegation by Thomas cost us flags. (full stop). But thats ok because he's not an "arseh*le" like ross, he's a tops bloke.
I couldn't give a stuff what type of bloke ross is, but he's a better coach than thomas is as roscoe got a playing group of aging stars and discards from other clubs into a GF and at least contending for a flag. Thomas couldn't even do that with a younger team.
F*** me, i'm sick and tired of you banging your drum about GT.
Now mrs thomas kindly f*****g stop it.

Dunno how people can bag lyon, he does make some odd selections but he has made a lot more good than bad decisions. I cant bag him for bringing in some players from other clubs as we were having a crack at the big one and lets be honest a bit of luck and he'd be the king of moorabin/seaford/stkilda. Sure the mercanary/jump on collingwoods bandwagon hurt most saints supporters but at the end of the day he DID NOT want to give in to collingwoods bullying and stood his ground, which may seem being stubborn but lets not forget what collingwood made port power do with nick stevens.

Ross comes to the club, first thing he notices?

Players are running the training. Not the coach, the players.

Grant was the worst thing to happen to this footy club, if we had Ross in 2004/5/6 we would've gotten at the very very least one flag.

I would suggest we all stop replying to Nexus/Pelican/Utility or whatever other user name this flog comes up with.

Nexus, go and post on the Bay if you want scandal. I am sick of reading this crap.

Nooo please don't, The Saints posters in the Bay have enough issues with stupid collingwood posters without some of the embarrassing rubbish that Nexus etc comes up with.

Excuse me Half Back Pocket. I admit to being Pelican Point but I have no idea who is Utility. This is the first time I've seen this name thank-you.

how was he "unlucky" in failing to react at all as a coach in the 2004/05 prelims when blind freddy could see we were being over run?

how was that unlucky?
You really shit me to tears!!!!!!

Ask ****ing Steve Baker's dad why Thomas was unlucky in 2004. It still burns me today that the game was stopped by those morons when Gherig kicked his 100th. Port were in shock and completely rattled. We would have lead by 5 goals at quarter time, instead we led by 5 points. But you are too stupid to remember that...FFS.

Regarding 2005, go back and see how many players were injured and not playing against Sydney that night in 2005. If luck had've gone our way we could've had both those flags.

You are a flog if you don't remember this or if you don't admit this.

The pitch invasion stopped the momentum we had and port re-jigged things ever so slightly. thomas couldnt alter any of the positions and the small changes williams made and was outcoached due to his stupidity.
In 2005 we had injuries, we had a lot of soft tissue injuries didn't we, that's because "mr unlucky" stuffed up with the weights program because he couldn't delegate.

neither are luck, the first is gameday inflexibility and the second is control freak-ness.

Yeah right.

He is right.

Ross Lyon's gameplan would've made St Kilda 2004 keep their momentum, and go on with it taking advantages quickly as they did. Ala Geelong game in Round 14 2009.

Ross when he got here got one of the best injury managers in Dave Mission. We rarely get those 2-3 week Hamstring injuries anymore, just big un-preventable ones we always got anyway.

are many of his posts as clearly A Fail as this this thread ?

Grant Thomas was a mistake. He's a nice guy etc, he did good things, but his whole non tendered appointment was a mistake. Ok, blame the president.

Had we won the Prelim in 04, the lions would have had four in a row, had us over a barrel. In 05 we fell apart when Hall hit McGuire and I saw Fraser leave his post to make a point. As I remember we were lucky to be in front at 3/4 time.

I have no issue with Grant Thomas, more games out of Aaron Hamill and he'd have been a premiership coach.

Ross Lyon is, in my opinion, the superior coach however fate seems to enjoy shatterig our hopes time and again.

This is how it goes, I am slowly and reluctantly learning.

This

Although I am sure we were the best team in 2005 cruelled by injury
We were also the best team in 2009 but blew it in the GF
Nearly snatched a GF off a superior Collingwood outfit in 2010
