Are Carlton now acknowledging they erred in not picking up Daniel Rich ?

Seems that Carlton have identified that they need a strong bodied inside midfielder. So they have picked up McLean at the high cost of a number 11 draft pick.

I think this move now is a resignation that they were wrong in bypassing Daniel Rich last year. Rich is already a much better midfielder than what Mclean has been & will be.

It seems baffling to think that they use no 11 on a midfielder when they badly need key defender's. Jamison is just a player. Nothing special, but still better than Bowers.

Waite was a big loss this year, however J Brown kicked 8 of his 10 goals on him a couple of years ago, so he is hardly the saviour they are looking for. Sure he has improved since then.

Can't see Mclean adding a great deal more than what Hadley would have given them.

So the sum of the last 2 year's draft high picks are: Yarran & McLean....Still no key defender's ?

At this stage, it's a bit too early to pass judgement on Yarran. However he looks like a very good reserves footballer. Time will tell I guess.

Actually, last year we acknowledged that we needed another avenue to goal, so we picked up Yarran (given Hurley was not available). You can't always fix everything at once.

We needed forwards, still do. That's why we took Yarran. If Rich was so widely believed to be an out-and-out star why didn't Freo, Essendon, Port etc. take him in the draft? All you're doing is using hindsight to state Rich is who we should have taken.

Besides, Yarran has bucketloads of potential, has played something like 5 AFL games and was only 18 this year. If you are writing him off now you're going to have a lot of egg on your face later on.

And it is quite clear you have no idea about our defence, similar to a lot of othery footy fans. We lost Waite, Jamison and Austin all for over half the year. Waite and Jamison our CHB and FB respectively. Yet we still managed a % of over 110% showing that we had a balanced attack/defensive game plan and players.

Bower is only 21 and is playing one of the hardest positions on the ground. I am battling to think of a CHB who has done better at his age. Prior to his leg injury verse Essendon he was one of the best performing defenders in the comp, regularly shutting down his man and running off to great effect. Only Bradshaw towelled him, and that was only because Jamo got injured half way through the game and the matchups screwed up.

Our defence is extremely unfairly maligned. It's not the best, but it is nowhere near the worst. And i'm confident Jamo, Bower, Austin etc. will grow into being extremely good players.

Yarran will be a gun.

Stupid thread.

The only similarity between Rich and Mclean is the fact they're one paced midfielders.

Daniel Rich is more like Marc Murphy than Brock Mclean.
The success of other draftees, i.e. Hurley, Rich, Beams & Ziebell compounds what a blunder drafting Yarran was.
I wouldn't swap Yarran for Beams or Sidebottom if you included Dale Thomas as the steak knives.

Bigfooty poster's lack of football knowledge never ceases to amaze me.

You really have to stop overrating Bower. You praise his game on Riewoldt, yet Roo kicked 5 goals, took plenty of marks and got 3 brownlow votes.

Any key forward would love to line up on Bower.

Reiwoldt is an absolute star of the competition. It's not like Bower's the only defender he's kicked a bag on. And a lot of those defenders aren't only 21 years of age - an absolute puppy in KPP years.

Pears kept him to 2.
Kept Fev to 2, Brown to 0, Roughhead to 2, Pavlich to 2, held Taylor Walker basically kickless for 3 quarters in a high scoring game, all in his first full year.

Pears has had a far superior year to Bower playing in key posts, not as a third man up. He's 2 years younger.

It is still way to early to be judging yarran , he has played what one year?

Emma Quayle wrote a top article about this recently. She used the example of Paul Hasleby having a top debut year and winning the Rising Star award, but being overtaken later by those whose debut years were inferior.

"Yarran was one of the most naturally talented players in the draft, if not the most gifted... Give him some time. He has some special talent."

The woman got all but 3 draftees at their eventual selections in her phantom draft last year, so she really does know her stuff when it comes to the juniors... puts posters like The Panther and Mighty Thor to shame.

Wow, a phantom draft.

You don't actually need to know anything about football to get it right. You just have to have inside info about what the club's are going to do.

Look at the phantom drafts on the Drafts and Trading Board in the last few days leading up to the draft in 2008, most people could easily pick the first 7 or 8 at least.

If you aren't aware of Emma Quayle's knowledge of junior players, then you are just showing yourself to be as ignorant as the OP. Quayle has been a very good judge of junior talent for awhile now. Her opinion carries a lot more credo than the trolls on here.

She lost me when she said Mark McGough was the next Michael Voss:thumbsu: Yarran was laughable in the VFL tonight.

Somehow I don't think she is concerned one bit about losing you & somehow I think she knows a lot more about junior talent than you ever will.

Interesting though that you should refer to McGough. A prime example of a player who early on looked at home at AFL level, yet fell away very quickly.

It is a very dangerous practice writing off players too early, because some clubs' losses are other clubs' gains. Zac Dawson will be playing in a GF tomorrow, yet there were plenty of BF 'experts' happy to contribute to negative threads about him & write him off after a less than auspicious beginning to his career.

That means absolutely Squat. The point is, her opinion is not gospel. Citing an example of her putting Yarran high in a phantom draft, doesn't hold much weight compared to what he has shown thus far at an AFL & VFL level.

The majority of AFL recruiters, who hold more knowledge & research on prospective draftees, collectively laughed when Yarran was taken at 6.

She also said Bowman Nixon was a 10 year CHB, when he hadn't played a game there in his junior career.

It is interesting when people post such garbage like this when Yarran was rated in top 8 by most experts pre last year's draft, who knows were he will end up as to what level he will reach but this statement is totally incorrect, as there were many several clubs Essendon and Brisbane that rated him very highly.
