Let me preface this by saying that I rather enjoy dogs despite the impression you might get from my upcoming rant. I think they are mostly cute and fun to play with, and I enjoy patting a cute puppy as much as anyone.
But I think they are grossly overrated and their importance is massively overstated in modern times. I'm not sure when this shift happened. It seems like only 10-15 years ago being obsessed with pets and treating them as human children was the domain of middle aged spinsters and weird old grannies who lived alone, but now it is totally mainstream.
To me this obsession with dogs is a sign of the emotional immaturity/instability of the general population. The world is a cold place and difficult to navigate and so people clutch to these simple animals who show vaguely human-like displays of affection to convince themselves that they are indeed loveable, because they have won the affection of an animal that would show the same affection to a serial killer or terrorist as it would to them. These people also say things like 'dogs are better than humans' because other humans judge them based on their words and actions, and not just the fact that they exist and sometimes give them food.
I also love the phrase 'there are no bad dogs, just bad owners' whenever a dog (inevitably a pitbull or similarly aggressive breed) attacks a person. I don't buy it. Some dogs are just shits, and some dog breeds are predisposed to violence and shouldn't be owned by anyone, including people who can quote unquote handle them.
I saw this website DoesTheDogDie.com where movies that depict dogs being harmed (among other things) are listed so that people who are upset by this can avoid the film. I mean, c'mon, this is an example of the hysterical/emotional instability of dog lovers. There is no need for a grown adult to turn into some delicate flower, fainting onto a couch when they see a dog suffering pretend harm onscreen.
I'm sorry if this post is a bit jumbled, I don't have the patience to proofread but I hope my point is clear. If you can't enjoy a dog as a dog, and have to attach all these human traits to it, then you don't really like dogs IMO.
