If they win, they get an opportunity to host an interstate side, but they don't control it. If Port win, a GWS win guarantees GWS goes to Adelaide in week 1, which is a perverse disincentive.

In comparison, a loss very probably lets them stay in Sydney v Swans week 1. The only way it can come unstuck is if Port gets belted (i.e. loses by Giants margin + 4 extra goals). If that happens, a GWS loss sends them to GMHBA instead of SCG.

Probably a risk worth taking though. In their shoes, I'd be resting players too.
