Arrest of former SA Liberal Leader on Drug Supply Charges

Former SA Liberal Leader David Speirs has been arrested and formally charged by SA Police on two counts of the supply of a controlled substance. The arrest took place on 26 September for events that allegedly took place on 2-3 August and 9 August this year. Speirs is now on police bail.

The matter became public yesterday after Speirs posted a self recorded interview on his Facebook page announcing his arrest and claiming it was part of some deep state conspiracy.

Speirs faces a maximum $50,000 fine and 10 years jail.

The member for Black said he intends to resign from parliament later this month.

"Deep state conspiracy" - :drunk:

Take a look at that facebook video he posted and he blames everyone but himself and while saying he got arrested and his home searched by 'armed police' (SA Police officers, like most state cops always carry guns btw) he fails to mention the fact he was charged for supplying drugs.

And as the SA Police Commissioner said on Monday, if he thinks he's being persecuted by police and 'the state' he should report it to ICAC - which surprise. surprise he hasn't done.

And as the pic Kurve posted shows, all of this has played out in public when back at the start of September a video surfaced in the local media of him snorting lines in his own kitchen. His response when he was confronted by the local Murdoch rag was that it was a 'deep fake'...despite analysis from a forensice expert that there was no evidence of the video having been digitally altered and Speirs himself acknowleding that it was his kitchen which is shown in the video.

Even his own Liberal leader who replaced him told Speirs to report it to police if he thinks it was an AI generated conspiracy. Surprise surprise, he didn't and a couple of weeks later the police arrested him for two counts of supply.

Speirs is entitled to the assumption of innocence. But the story he's used about deep fakes and deep state conspiracy just doesn't have any ring of truth to it. The alternative option - that he actually is a user and did supply to others - seems to be the far more believable option.

And look, we all know drug dependence is at plague levels across all levels of society and I reckon most thinking people would sympathise with him if he came clean about having a habit. Heck, having a former State Cabinet Minister and leader of the Liberal Party coming out admitting an addiction might lead to a more informed and honest public debate about drug use and dependency - that it isn't just reserved for the unemployed, criminal scum or sports stars but it can sink its claws into anyone.

As is often the case with people in positions of power in our society when facing allegations of criminal activity, Speirs will have access to the very best and expensive legal defence team to represent him. The chances of him successfully defending any court action and a jury not being able to convict him of these supply charges beyond reasonable doubt would be pretty good, regardless of the truth of the claims against him.

But right now Speirs is added to the long list of politicians who have trashed their own reputation and instead of admitting fault and showing a sense of self reflection - they blame others for what has happened to them and the end of their political careers.

But the real loser is again, the reputation of all politicians and the system they are meant to serve.

Australia the only place where putting powder up your nose makes national news.
Spot on.

The leader of a major political party, serving MP and former Cabinet Minister being filmed snorting white powder, subsequently being arrested for of two counts drug supply and then coming out publicly claiming police involvement in a deep state conspiracy would definitely NOT be a news story in say the US, UK, France, Germany....Nauru.

There is an old song. "Iam always in the Kitchen at Parties"
I live in his electorate. I have an intense dislike for him.
He has door knocked my home a few times and he does seem "wired"

The ABC report has details of dates he has supplied the powder to other people,
hopefully they are adults and not teens.

He came back from a trip from Scotland and was bagging his own party.
Suggesting there were leaks, and deception. Going on and on about the Lib leadership, really tipping the bucket on them.
Just as well they had something to silence him. Always good to keep some dirt stashed away.

Not hard to work out who silenced him!

I find any discussion is limited on the matter. All the new services FB pages turn off their comments.
And Speirs own FB page is heavily moderated. Negative comments are deleted quickly.

Was a part-time opposition leader, so good riddance I say as was not fully committed to the role.

Expect he will just get done for possession, but his political career is cooked.

Actually good for Tarzia as clears him from all the back stabbing allegations.
