Atmosphere at the soccer better?

Cheers squads, supporters groups, call them what you want, they all do the same thing, they are all highly contrived. Take the singing away from the soccer and the atmosphere would be dead.

I went to the soccer game on fri night and sat in the middle of the BWB. The atmosphere was good - chanting/singing the whole time, but the rest of the crowd just watched the game. If anyone is thinking of going, sit at the ends and join in the chanting.

The reason there is no chanting in footy is because there's too much action on the field. In the soccer, when ever there's a shot at goal or something all the singing stops. Its funny

Roonaldo, you have converted me to the world game with your persuasive arguments: I only came on this site to talk Aussie Rules, but thanks to you I'll drop everything, sign up to Foxtel, and then pledge allegiance to my favourite EPL team based upon some clever reasoning such as 'I like the colour red', or 'By barracking for the most popular and successful team I won't look like a pathetic maggot to my friends, who I am desperately trying to impress'.

Wow, Sarcasm to that there is no responce is there?

I've been a member of Victory since the start. There is a bit of atmosphere when the cheer squad gets singing but for most of the game the crowd is dead quiet. That's because the game is boring in my opinion. I don't think I'll renew my membership next year.

Some member you are, thanks for the money arsewipe.

BWB urges people to either Stand and sing, or f*ck off.

I said take the 'singing' away, not the 'crowd'. Read before you reply.

I was impling how stupid your comment was.

Take the "Insert AFL name here" *clap clap clap* and "Ball!" and you have no atmosphere either.

Why did you bother joining up as a member if you are gonna slag the sport?

That's like buying a 1000 dollar PS3 only to despise it and chuck nasty looks at it all day.

I derive happiness in the knowledge not one intelligent person has degraded football.

It proves the theory, plain and simple.

Some people don't have the brain capacity for more than one sport, and that is just sad.

The soccer is OK, better than cricket in my opinion.

Roonaldo - your 'stupid' comment suggests you lack understanding. Most of the crowd noise at the soccer is created by the singing, very little noise is made about the actual play. At AFL there is very little contrived cheering - most of the cheering revolves around what is happening on the field.

One of the things I like about 'BigFooty' is that I am able to post about AFL and 'Association Football' (whatever you want to call it) my favourite sports.

I also like the fact that in the 'Association Football' section here is full of bicodal people like me.

But once in a while there are these threads about Australian Rules vs Association Football...I usually don't slag anyone on forums..but..can I say that they are really borefests?

There is a section who will only like Australian Rules, and that's fine. One section will only like Association Football and that's fine. And then there are people (like lots on this forum) who are lucky enough to like both. It is like arguing whether Pizza is better than Canelloni or whether Chicken Parmigiana is better than the Veal version.

Different things, different sports etc. The athmosphere at Telstra Dome was awsome, but so it is on a packed MGC watching a final between two Melbourne AFL teams. But is different. The support with Association Football is organised with chanting, choreography and colour. At an AFL game there is a constant wave of sound as each individual shouts their own instructions: "Tackle him!" "Pick him up!" "Ball!" "in the back!" etc.

Both fantastic, both unique.

Well said. Both are great games with their good and bad points. I've never understood the fear a lot of AFL fans have of football, and similarly there are a group of football supporters who believe you are committing a sin if you watch and enjoy AFL or League.

Great effort by the Victory to get 50,000 on the weekend :thumbsu: Only a couple of EPL teams could beat that. They just need a couple of the other sides to follow suit and it'll be a vibrant league.

Born and bred on AFL, but got into 'soccer' when I lived in the UK for a few years. Have to say I love both and quite like the NRL too.
I am a regular to MVFC games and I believe the atmosphere to be far superior to that of any AFL game.
Quite cringeworthy the chants (if you can call them that) at AFL games.

This is quite a funny topic - the atmosphere at the football now a days is pretty strerile.

The TV ratings suggest that people love the A-league for other reasons than atmosphere...

Don't know what TV ratings you're looking at (obviously not actual ratings)- these are some of the latest figures - and they are national audiences.

A-LEAGUE ADEL V MELB FOX Sports 3 50,107
A-LEAGUE QLD V PERTH FOX Sports 3 47,616
A-LEAGUE MELB V NEWC FOX Sports 3 47,330

Yes, that's 50,000 nationally. That suggests people in the main couldn't give a fat rats clacker about the A-League.

The reason the crowds chant is because the game is so boring that they have to make their own entertainment. If they are getting these crowds so soon after the Soccerroos national success then imagine what the crowds will be like if the national team fades. AFL has a lot more substance about it, the crowd and TV figures are always pretty constant.

:D :thumbsu:

So in all those leagues all over the world people go to the football to chant? :D

AFL has more substance because it's got a long history in this country. Football doesn't, amongst other reasons thanks to idiots like you who have no idea what they're talking about and happily come up with any stupid excuse to make the sport look bad.

Ignorance and arrogance at its best :thumbsu: .

Soccer crowds aren't made up of people who actually like sport, they're made up of

1. Yuppie and bandwaggoning types

2. IQ challenged immigrants, including Poms. Mainly bogans.

No idea

But whatever, as someone else said, no intelligent or reasonable person will attack football, it's only the insecure and backward types.

I think it is YOU who has no idea.

That's spot on. That is the ONLY reason why the atmosphere seems better.

That world cup qualifier against Uruguay was a crowd of Aussie bandwagoners and foreign immigrants.

Whereas AFL is a crowd with some level headed balanced people and racist bigots such as yourself.

Hey, how's One Nation doing?

Hi! Just popped on. Don't know what you're talking about but pleased to see you follow Moonee Valley Football Club. It's a great team in a great league.

I've been going to football games in Europe for over 20 years. There's always singing, it starts hours before the game in the pubs and in the stands, continues through the whole match and goes on afterwards in the pubs.

The fans sing because it's great. Fans knowing and singing the same songs bond with each other, they try to outsing the fans of the opposing team and they support their own club. It's a fantastic thing and I've got great memories having been part of it so often, I can recommend it to anyone and every Australian I've taken to games back home absolutely loved it.

If football fans sing songs because the game is boring, why aren't fans singing at American football or baseball? Have you ever been to one of those games? 90% of the time nothing happens, still everyone there keeps sitting on their seat and does the occasional "clap clap clap".

And has it ever occurred to you that the Croatian, Dutch and Swedish fans at the Australian Open sing a lot as well? Has that anything to do with tennis then?

The crowd at the Uruguay match were fanatic Australian fans. My mates who love football all got into the game after they spent some time in Europe, where they could see and feel what the game really is about. None of them are bandwagoners and none of them have given up on their footy team either. They love both codes now.

This country has a group of ignorant/arrogant/scared/backward haters of what is foreign. Just look at your comment about the crowd being foreign migrants. And what about that "fan" who was interviewed on channel 9 after the Victory game friday, saying there were riots and he felt unsafe. This "fan" appears to be a reporter who works for Southern Cross Network, funnily enough a station that recently replied the question of a Victory fan why they never reported on them by "we hate your game!". Simply unbelievable  .

Flags are for kids FFS.

And we wonder why our sporting crowds are so drab and dull these days in the AFL.

Yeah, flag-waving and the tifo/bandieristo culture is just for kids.
