Punters robbed of win on $1.09 favourite
By Nick Hluchaniuk Yesterday at 6:37pm

It was a rough set of circumstances for favourite backers. Luverboy was expected to make light work of his four rivals when sent around well in the red at $1.09 in race two - the Taylor Motors 3YO Pace Ms (2160m).

The hot favourite didn't have it all his own way however and made hard work of running down second favourite Manly Boy ($7) in the straight. Luverboy and Manly Boy went to the line locked together, with the judge finding in favour of the latter, declaring Manly Boy the winner by a nose and the all-clear given.

Prior to race four however, the presiding judging officials advised stewards that upon further review they felt an error had occurred in declaring Manly Boy the winner.

After taking evidence from the judging officials involved, and the connections of Manly Boy and Luverboy, it was established that the judging officials had mistaken the nose of Luverboy for the nose of Manly Boy and as a consequence ‘all clear’ was given on the incorrect placings.

In light of the evidence, stewards permitted the judge to correct the error, with Luverboy elevated to first.

The ruling was of no help to punters who backed Luverboy however, with the amendment to placings not affecting the original payment of bets due to the 'all clear' having been given.

Harness Racing Victoria said an internal review would be conducted concerning the circumstances leading to this error.
