At Shield level? Hes a good domestic player

Yes but if mcsweeney was as suitable as you say he would have 1) been opening the last 3 years (it's not like SA are a dominating team who don't have a spot for him there) and 2) dominating for the last 3-4 shield years like Bancroft has done. He hasn't done either. Bancroft is certainly more deserving than anyone else in the queue. But as I said it's political.

Nail meet head. Cowan spot on.
Takes a former test opener to understand it seems.

Finally someone with brains. 100 % right not that anyone will listen.

Herald Sun saying that McSweeney to open, Inglis to be spare batsmen, Boland to be spare bowler in the predictable squad.

Inglis as the spare batsman? Jeepers.

So we have a wicket-keeper as the batting reserve and we have a middling middle order bat as an opener.

And our batting stocks are good. Yeah right.

Selectors should be sacked. I liked Bailey as s cricketer but as a selector he's a moron.

good to see we learnt from last summer pushing a non opener to open oh wait, harris was a no brainer if he fails in the first two tests so be it stamp the papers for good if nathan fails then what?

for my money hunt was the one to pick

worth noting that the squad is only for the 1st Test...

Happy with that squad but important not to drop McSweeney if he fails in the opening test as a opening batsman.I have said in previous posts that it would be ideal for McSweeney to play and open in the 2nd 11 shield game starting on Thursday even if does not play day 4 seeing the squad has to go to Perth on Sunday.Other borderline test players should also be playing in these games I think starting on Thursday for all states. The lack of red ball cricket during the test series for these players I do not like.

Khawaja and Labuschange are under pressure if they fail as their current form could be better.

Harris is one of these borderline test players that should be in the 2nd 11 shield games starting Thursday,I think for all states as I find these 2nd 11 shield fixtures confusing.

It isn’t political this year he’s dead set averaging about 3 this summer dreadful form

Sorry but I don't agree with that. He would have been in last year if it wasn't political. He's not ever getting picked again (nor is probably Harris if they are picking someone as unsuitable as mcsweeney).

Possibly a little truth to it being political he bats like a crab anyway and is as ugly as anything to watch so not complaining not having him there.

I agree with last summer it was a waste should have given Warner the farewell in Sydney and used the other 4 tests

I listened, I listened to the entire podcast and not just a 90 second clip on twitter or X or whatever it's called. It was one of the worst and most ill-informed podcasts I can remember listening to. Cowan exposed himself as a guy making opinions despite the fact he clearly doesn't watch domestic cricket and the other bloke is some deluded Victorian Harris fan saying words. Couple blokes stealing a living based on that podcast, and I say that as someone who usually likes listening to Ed. Ed called McSweeney a "mediocre number 4" despite the fact he has been batting 3 for South Australia for some time now. Your credibility is in the mud when you make basic errors like that and people that casually follow the shield can see through the bullshit.

Warner was so finished and Bancroft was so in form then the swap was obvious. But politically some people in the selectors tent won't go for it.

But they are also useless. They've had over 12 months of knowing Warner was going to plan-if they wanted to pick mcsweeney why the heck were they not instructing SA to run him as an opener in the shield last year? They have been exposed for having no viable plan and he's only being picked because it's a Bradbury situation.

Ok then. You should shoot your resume through to selection@cricket.com.au

I've got better things to do with my life but id do a better job than them. Most people would. Inflated egos-no decent decision making processes and flawed junior development systems.

Inglis has averaged 60 with the bat over a fairly extended run of shield matches he has played in

I'm aware of his average. My point is if our best reserve batsman is our reserve keeper and our best opener option is a bog average middle order bat who has never opened, our reserve batting stocks are clearly flawed and have no depth no?

Let’s just be happy that at least they didn’t go Harris for the 15th time to tell us he’s not test standard.

Bancroft was unlucky last year

If you listened to what he said properly he's not plumping for Harris. His points are 1) the selectors don't understand the importance of picking a specialist opener given they aren't developing any and aren't preparing guys like mcsweeney to open and 2) Harris is probably the least worst option given our paucity of other options (he's not saying Harris is good enough he's saying everyone else is so bad that you probably have to go back to him).

He's 1million % right on the first count and I'm not a Harris fan but it's probably hard to argue against the 2nd count either.

his played 5 shield games in 3 years lol i get why he has played one day cricket and what not i just think it's flawed looking at AVG when he bats low in the order, davies from nsw AVG 67 last year should he be opening?

CA has absolutely zero sway over state selections. SA have Hunt locked in one spot and trying to develop another opener.
Khawaja batted at 4 for QLD last year leading into the tests don’t forget

Half of our last 15 test openers were not "specialist openers". The "specialist opener" thing is a myth, if you have a good technique, know where your off stump is and have the slightest bit of patience most good top 4 batsman can move it in to the opener role. Langer, Katich, Watson etc
