Australia v India - post 2nd Test discussion, we're all doomed? Maybe not.

Stop listening to shit Ed Cowan podcasts and making your opinions from that please. McSweeney has averaged 80 in FC cricket since February. He also bats 3 which is a top order bat not a middle order bat.

I stopped listening at February. Get back to me when he does it over a consistent period of time.

Also, by this time. Khawaja should be about time to retire.

Or controversially, take both McSweeney and Konstas to the Caribbean in June next year

Think they will take Konstas on that tour as experience anyway

It’s still better than going back to a bloke in Harris who has failed 14 times before. Langer batted the same position for WA as McSweeney does.

Warner was so finished and Bancroft was so in form then the swap was obvious. But politically some people in the selectors tent won't go for it.

But they are also useless. They've had over 12 months of knowing Warner was going to plan-if they wanted to pick mcsweeney why the heck were they not instructing SA to run him as an opener in the shield last year? They have been exposed for having no viable plan and he's only being picked because it's a Bradbury situation.
I don't think it's political, other wise they would never have picked Bancroft in the 2019 Ashes series

CA has absolutely zero sway over state selections. SA have Hunt locked in one spot and trying to develop another opener.
Khawaja batted at 4 for QLD last year leading into the tests don’t forget

Usman is a different case as he's nearing retirement so isn't going to block a younger player opening for qld. That doesn't apply to mcsweeney.
SA have had a revolving door on the 2nd opening spot so he easily could have gone there if good enough.
I disagree that CA have no sway we see them telling the state camps to for example play certain players in positions or limit their training/bowling loads all the time.

Regardless if they wanted Nathan in they should have been telling him and his coach last year that he either needed to open or move to a state that would let him open (if you're saying SA would have told their captain to get stuffed which I seriously doubt).

CA didnt do this because they werent considering him as a test opener but now because everyone else has failed they are having to throw him in at the 11th hour with no opening preparation.

Its nothing against mcsweeney i hope he does well but it shows how useless the selectors are at planning and why we need new leadership.

Half of our last 15 test openers were not "specialist openers". The "specialist opener" thing is a myth, if you have a good technique, know where your off stump is and have the slightest bit of patience most good top 4 batsman can move it in to the opener role. Langer, Katich, Watson etc

First of all that's the wrong mindset because you need go develop specialist openers just like you need to develop specialist keepers, fast bowlers, leg-spinner etc.

Secondly you might have a point if most middle order bats had a solid technique but if you watch the shield most middle order bats have a poor technique. Even Kontas does (although he has time), even someone like mcsweeney does too and I laugh about people talking about Webster in the middle order as his technique is equally loose. When you have guys like Davies who probably should be playing grade cricket in the A team it shows you we aren't prioritising technique. Which means there's more need for a specialist opener not less.

Absolutely.
Khawaja will probably finish after the Ashes so take Konstas to Sri Lanka And the Caribbean

Yep it’s the one instance where taking a young kid can be beneficial

What about McSweeney's technique is poor? Genuinely curious to hear what you have to say about it, you are the only person I have ever seen question his technique at all and somehow you have come to the conclusion that it's poor. Very strange that basically no one has questioned his technique at all but you have decided it's bad. You got a bee in your bonnet? Making up falsities? I guess it would be on brand considering you cited the Ed Cowan podcast earlier that was loaded with incorrect information.

I wouldn't take Konstas to Sri Lanka, the Lankans are back and competitive, and with the spinning pitches, not sure how well he'll do. Plus, the Lanka series may be must win games for the WTC, so a full strength XI may be needed

I don't necessarily think it's a given that McSweeney opens in Perth.

It's a reasonable assumption, but no certainty.

If Inglis opens then at least he won't have to keep.

And we still need 2 openers sooner rather than later.

LP backs McSweeney. That's enough for me to be sceptical.
Bumrah and co to have a field day with the new ball.

Was happy with any option bar Harris was not fussed which one. Just didn’t want a terrible fielder in the side batting is probably going to be similar might get 40 if all things go well

The selectors could have gone either way. But wish McSweeney all the best. Hope he is given a good run at it.

Where ever you sit on the others, doubt we will see Harris or Bancroft again. This selection shows an eye for the future. Everyone has their opinions, maybe along with Renshaw were unlucky at times, but you need to take your chances and they both/all 3 had a few this summer.

Do feel for Neser. Would have been interesting to see if he was selected ahead of Boland in the Squad, with such a great start. Hopefully it's not to bad and he can be fit if required for later tests.

Happy for McSweeney. He may not set the stage on fire with this first stint in the team but he’s earnt his place. Still only 25, if he fails over the next 5 tests then it’s an easy fix for Green to come in and Head to move to open in Sri Lanka. He could easily come in to the middle order in the future once Smith retires if that better suits. e.g Green at 4, McSweeney at 5.

If he succeeds or has a relatively good series averaging around 30+ then I hope the selectors stick fat and give him time like they did with Green. He will have a good career if he can see off India’s opening bowlers.

Unlucky mate, hope you’ll wish McSweeney well

It's a given...Inglis is clearly the reserve batter in the squad & is captaining the T20 series leading into the test.

I literally just wished him well in the post you quoted.

But I don't wish the selectors well because this decision and its lack of planning show how inept they are.

The two issues are equally important.

That’s good then.

And I guess we’ll see, personally I think he’ll go alright.
