Australian cheating at Newlands, where to from here?

It's amazing how disliked Warner is. Also love the perception these guys will walk back into the test side once ban is served, that ain't happening. Sutherland didn't issue the penalties the board did

There’s no way back for Warner. Smith and Bancroft will have to find form for their shield sides to be considered.

I still don't really understand this.

Faf du Plessis uses his zip to scratch the ball and gets a slap on the wrist meanwhile we burn our team to the ground.
Did Faf tell assembled media "yeah I scratched the ball up using my pants zipper to try to get some reverse swing" and Graeme Smith go "yeah, me and AB knew about it, we had a bit of a chat about it over our roast beef"?

Smith will be straight back in.

Warner will be on the outer for a minimum of another 12 months beyond his suspension, and even then still pretty unlikely he'll come back into the fold. His marketability to Cricket Australia may be the only thing that gets him another gig.

Bancroft is performance dependant as he'll be locked in a battle with Renshaw, Burns and maybe a coupe of others for a spot.

Well why was there a zip on his cricket whites in the first place? That was put there for a reason aka planned.
No they probably refused to admit guilt and appealed the suspension whereas smith took responsibility. I honestly thought smith was showing leadership taking responsibility completely unaware of how much the world would over react. He literally had the benchmark punishment playing in the same match as him which was nothing.

Wait what? Faf got Mrs du Plessis to sew a zip into his cricket whites for ball tampering purposes?

I don't think they were even suspected of anything. Faf was the one rubbing the ball close to the zip. See how it works?

Note these sanctions have not been imposed by the ICC.

Perhaps if Smith hadn't stood up for Du Plessis and had organised the channel 9 cameras to get better footage it would be different for Faf.

We will still be expected to beat Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

India will be a tough series but they've rarely put up much of a fight in Australia.

Interestingly the closest we’ve gotten was in 2003/04 when Australia were similarly ravaged with Warne and Mcgrath both out, except ofcourse that was through injury.

If the pitches remain as flat as they have been tho I expect Australia’s replacement bats to be pretty proficient anyway.

The interesting thing will be if this type of tampering has occurred previously on the same flat pitches and if it has been a factor in the Aussie fast bowlers being successful at home.

Why? You won’t get the truth from Warner, just random attempts to save himself.

I’m surprised people are surprised at the punishments.

Cheating and half confessing but still lying about it, and sandpaper is a fair bit worse than mints. I’m not sure who could claim otherwise.

The ICC don't seem to think sandpaper was a 'fair bit worse'. In fact they don't even really consider ball tampering cheating. If they did, they would issue considerably harsher penalties than a 5 run penalty, a fine or at worst 4 demerit points lol

Why would he try and save himself? Warner knows he is a lame duck and will never play for Australia again. Nothing to hide imho

Don't be a fool. He clearly found white pants with a zip on them for that exact reason and it was the second time he was sanctioned about it.

The ICC gave them 1 match bans! That's how serious they think it is.

Smith and Warner have lost a couple million dollars each over something the opposition captain has received no punishment for twice.

maybe except there is absolutely no suggestion or evidence that it has happened before

I would say we try and tamper on a fairly regular basis, i doubt we often do it with sand paper in such an obvious way but like all teams we do anything we can get away with to get the ball to reverse.

It appears to be an open secret in cricket which is why the ICC penalties are so laughable and clearly not meant to be a strong deterrent to the practice, our lot still should have known the climate here was different to overseas though, most will rally around their players when caught but not here.

Most people reckon Faf got off very lightly.

ICC toothless as ever.

Every other cricket nation would deny deny deny..
Then they would call in the lawyers to fight the ICC's 1 game ban

In australia we ban our captains for 12 months each

save us from your laughable moral grandstanding thanks

5 million dollar fine for Smith + Warner, 2 million for Bancroft.. plus a ban from all international cricket until our next test series would've been a far better punishment, 12 month bans will completely ruin the team for a long time.

I don't think india are clear favorites but it's going to be very close, even against a pathetic england side we might have lost at the gabba if not for smith and who knows how the series turns out from there so if it's a tight series no smith for us but kohli for india could turn a match.
