Australian cheating at Newlands, where to from here?

They should be proud of it like the pommy mints scandal .....

Anybody else taking a 'tinfoil hat' view of this?? Surely with the amount of scrutiny around ball tampering today and the number of cameras constantly focused on the ball during a match the players didn't think they could get away with it??

Controversy always attracts attention in sport, perhaps an attempt to get some substantial media coverage of the series??

As Australian cricketers, you have a duty of care and responsibility to the Baggy Green and to Australia. This event goes far far further than UnderarmGate in that was within the rules (just) but not the spirit. Can anyone think of anything more damaging to the Baggy Green brand ever?

The ACB must come to the fore. It is crisis time for cricket and the ACB and the result (regardless of ICC) must be fast (ie today) and must be harsh.
We forfeit the test, Lehman goes, Smith is sacked as captain and stood down for the remainder of the series along with the the rest of the leadership team.

It wont happen (see @Anzacpaul above) but this could kill test cricket and short term losses need to be made.
Only things that come close for me are Warne and the diuretic and Warne/Waugh Jr. with the bookie. And those incidents didn't implicate the entire leadership group of the side.

They are in damage control. I'd expect them as in the leadership group plus boof even Sutherland coming up with lies to hide the truths we don't yet know about. There will be plenty of info that will probably never come to light. But enough is known for all of them to get the sack.

I found Clarke's responses to questions about him returning completely over the top.

This series has hardly been lacking publicity.

You could make a case for Warner going rabid at De Kock and Rabada barging into Smith being beatups, but no publicity stunt would involve calling the fairness of the result into question.

Pup as I said before is playing it along to look good. Remember all the shit that came out once he retired? Clarke is a calculating person, Smith is just naive.

The problem they have is there's nothing else left to come out. Smith signed a full confession, we cheated and it was a deliberate tactic.

I love how Pup is using this to garner the Aussie public. Firstly we don't know what happens, and secondly really?

Call me a cynic but Pup has done some ball tampering or knew about it as captain, wasn't a fan of Smith (they butted heads if I can recall), and he's trying to garner support. God, I'm suh a cynic

He ruled it out the first four times Peter FitzSimmons and co. asked him. Clarke was fantastic on Sports Sunday this morning.

Worst thing about this is that it also brings doubt over anything even remotely suspicious Australia have been involved with under Smith. The only way to get over it is by completely dismantling the leadership group and give the captaincy to someone untainted by this saga.

Think what Pakistan did post-spot fixing gate. Now spot fixing is a more serious offence than ball tampering, but in terms of public trust both in and out of Australia the effect feels very similar. After the spot fixing saga Pakistan had to appoint a 36 year old with a modest Test record and out of the team just to restore even some dignity in the side. What happened was that they went to #1 and became one of the more respected teams in world cricket. It's possible to get out of this, but given this was combined with Australia's poor on-field conduct....it's gonna take a lot of work, and may be worth losing some series for.

Will be interesting to see what CA does as well. Given how strong the public rebuke of Australia's actions seem to be, they may not merely follow ICC's penalties/slap on the wrist.

If there isn't significant fallout from this cricket Australia risks losing the public.

Anyone involved in this meeting needs to be removed from their leadership positions and suspended for all cricket for at least six months and five test matches (not sure if we play any tests before next summer?).

There's a complete leadership vacuum in Australian cricket and change at the top is needed.

In reality though I think everyone in the XI and the coaches would have known what was going on.

He's got nothing to lose if he does make a comeback. Either makes runs and becomes a legend or fails but still seen as a great bloke for coming back to help Australian cricket.

He'd be loving this

Reckon Clarkes approach to cricket was similar to an entrepreneurs approach to business. Success, excellence and career advancement at ANY cost.

Made him a great batsmen and onfield captain, and a terrible off-field one.

They're not sorry for what they did, They're sorry they got caught.

Any other team and we would want them banned for years. Same should apply to us but cricket Australia will give a slap on the wrist.

Ban them for 12 months (Smith Bancroft warner Hazelwood starc) anyone else who knew what was going on.

None of them to ever lead again ever and none should be able to play anywhere incl 20/20 tournaments

The opposition captain is a ball tampered, isn’t he?

What was his sanction for cheating?

\Not from what I saw this morning. He looked very hurt, not loving it at all

Will be interesting to hear the thoughts of all the people here that were calling Faf du Plessis a cheat for that ball tampering incident a couple of years ago.

That incident was not as blatant as this incident and he also never admitted to deliberately cheating like the Australian players have.

Probably the most shameful incident for Australian cricket since the underarm incident back in 1981 and the people involved deserve to be suspended.

4 blokes missed a test for not doing homework on the Indian tour this is much more serious and anyone involved should at the least miss the last test. If we have to fly others over so be it.

good god this is bullshit

The Australian Cricket Team has apologised for getting caught cheating at Newlands and vowed to get better at it.

In a packed media conference, Steve Smith said the team had overlooked the 30 broadcast cameras at the ground and the fact yellow tape doesn’t blend in against white uniforms.

“This was obviously our first attempt at cheating,” said Smith winking for some reason, “but we’re committed to it and we will get better.”

Cameron Bancroft, who tampered with the ball, said the incident had delivered some key learnings that would be taken on board.

“Obviously, we couldn’t foresee that our every movement would be filmed and watched by an audience of millions, so we’ll take that on board.

“And while yellow wasn’t the best choice, originally, we were going to go with hot pink, so I think we’re at least on the right path.

“Getting caught is probably our biggest takeaway. Cheating works best when you don’t get caught.”

Smith said that probably the most disappointing thing about their plan was that it didn’t really work.

“The aim of cheating is to make winning easier, so cheating and still getting smashed is kind of amazing.”

“It’s a work in progress though, so we’ll get there.”

When asked if putting more effort into getting better at cricket was a feasible alternative to cheating, Smith blinked for five minutes saying nothing before a media adviser ended the conference.

Got nothing really. But this seems worse, premeditated, organised and people need to be sanctioned. Part of the problem is the icc Havent been hard enough on a lot of issues for too long.
