Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Tis is strange but the reiwoldt point rather than goal left the ball in their forward line.

if he had slotted it, it would have been a point difference and back to the centre, where we were dominating. Cyril was running free.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Absolultely the Hawks own fault on Friday night.

It is interesting watching games in hindsight. Everytime I watch the 08 GF I get more and more critical of individual players and their mistakes during the match. Probably an unfair way to judge individual players.

Friday night was not any individuals fault but the HFC did let it slip.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Yes, don't make any mistakes, boys.

.

Don't you believe that Buddy giving away the double 50 metres was easily preventable?

As I said, I felt Hawthorn won the game. I felt they were the better team, and played better footy. What I mean by this thread is that if it wasn't a tied game, then clangers by either side may not have had any influence on the outcome; but because it was a tied game, then each mistake, each clanger stands out in hindsight. That's was what struck me as I watched the game with great interest.

I absolutely agree, particularly with the Buddy double 50 metres. Knocking the ball out is inexcusable from ANY player, and Buddy should know better.

While I felt that Hawthorn should have won the game, I don't think it was any particular clanger or missed shot, or even the woeful umpiring. The vast majority of all of these were fairly equal both ways, and I'm sure St Kilda is just as disappointed in the way they played the game as we feel having 'lost' what should have been a win.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Yes Buddy's 2 50's were preventable. But that is Buddy - he is impetious but that is part of the make up of him, and maybe without it you wouldn't have the flip side and the brilliance ( as a Bombers supporter i'm sure you could attest to that in those 2 goals ).

Buddy is only 23 and has some more maturing to do and what he did could be argued it cost us the game, yes.

However there were other infringements on the night such as the St Kilda runner getting in between Kosi and having a shot and the now infamous 19th man decision that could have also been avoided.

I personally didn't take that as a loss.Yes we should have won on the scoreboard but what we did accomplish is a moral victory and a win in the fact that all the other teams are now saying Sh*t bloody Hawthorn are back and we don't want to meet them in the finals. St Kilda also know deep down they lost and stole the draw, although you wouldn't get any of them to admit it.

Fact is 4 weeks ago we were saying that with the run of Doggies, Geelong, Brisbane and St Kilda we would be happy to come away with 2 wins. We came away with 2 1/2 wins and very very nearly 4. In the last 10 weeks we have only lost 1 game and that was to Geelong by 2 points.

After being 1 and 6 it is a massive effort to be where we are and some people even considering we could make the top 4, although personally i thought this was a bit of a pipe dream.

Leave Buddy alone - he is not the reason for the draw, he was leading goal kicker with 5 on the night.

Also how many times have you seen a player going for a mark and get a push in the back as he marks it. Gibson did it to Riewoldt later in the game and no 50m penalty was paid and i could name a lot of instances during the year where eaxactly the same thing happened and nothing. But because it was Buddy he gets pinged. The second 50 for knocking it out of his hand was definately 50 but i will argue that he shouldn't have even been running down the field on the first 50.

If you wan a finger to point try pointing it at Roughy. 30m out directly in front and kicks a point. he is a professional footballer who plays full forward and paid $200k a year to not be able to kick a ball in a straight line for 30m. Too often this has happened this year.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Good OP. Watching the game for the second time, knowing the outcome, so many little things come to light. For me the biggest one was Hawthorns first shot at goal. Ellis took a mark and fancied his chances from outside 50. I'v never seen Ellis kick the ball over 45 meters, let alone from 55 with someone on the mark. Buddy was screaming for it. He may not have got the goal, but Buddy would have at least got a point.

Same goes with Birchall opting for his left foot 10 meters from goal. All he needed was a behind.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

I agree, I just finished watching the replay on IQ again and knowing the result, and being calmer gave me a lot more insight.

The game was ours for the taking really. We had chances, and so did st kilda, to end it before the interchange issue.

Hopefully the players take the draw in a good way and keep pushing, instead of putting their heads down.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

Birchall's right foot must have been amputated,he NEVER uses it and to think that a professional player can not use his non-dominant side really is a disgrace.....

Apart from that the op is correct,it seems the players are blase about shots for goal and some are resigned to the fact they will miss before they even line up.(see Roughhead)

Osbourne's set shot was laughable, how can you not score even a point from ten meters out?Until the Hawks learn to take their opportunities they will be pushing shit uphill in most games, especially finals.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

In a tied game with 55 free kicks and 13.9 to 14.3 scoring, singling out Buddy's 50's is a bit rich. What about the other 1000 things that could have influenced the result?

What happened happened.

Let me get this straight - Buddy kicks five but gives away one to the opposition.

That's a four goal net gain on his part and yet there's still some who want to blame him for the draw.

The logical extension of such flawed logic is take away his four goals and we would have lost.

Strange days indeed.

Eagerly awaiting the results of the MRP.

In the first quarter, buddy bumped Milne behind play, could be looked at, even though I believe there was nothing in it. But, its buddy

We had our chances to win and it could have easily been a close loss.

We've shown we can mix it with the top teams. Really need to be cleaner with our skills, and hopefully the dangerous Rhan Hooper can get back soon.

All in, it was a weird game. Etihad stadium, with it's slippery surface and cold atmoshpere. Looking at all the players sliding around, we were fortunate that no-one was injured.

The umpires' strange decisions. They still hate Franklin, that first 50m penalty was hardly there.

And a draw to end it off. Just take the two points and move on, I say.

Great and interesting thread to read.

Hodge is an out and out freak player. Hopefully Goddard will reach his level in time.

On the interchange incident
: I have heard several people now who saw or claim they saw it. All have the same story of Hawks having 19 on the field by one player entering the arena too early and then going off again.

As Hawks officials have now gone quite I presume Birchall has fessed up.

Re: The tied game brings out all manner of insights in a replay

I'm sure St Kilda is just as disappointed in the way they played the game as we feel having 'lost' what should have been a win.

It was a shocking night full of crazy decisions and strange happenings, could not pin the result down to any particular incident, because there were way too many.

After watching the replay, I found it a real shame about the poor umpiring and the excessive slipping, because it was an absolute cracker of a game.

That's it, isn't it? A game that was ruined by things out of the control of both clubs. Let's just hope that some sanity prevails on both fronts.

I spent most of the game praying that none of our players got injured on the ice rink. What a pathetic surface, I'd be concerned if my Auskick kids had to play on it.

As for the game itself, I have no doubt that Hawthorn has more upside to it than St Kilda. I feel that we are still improving this season and when/if Hooper and Taylor come back in I think we just might witness something special in September.

Yeah, external parties are doing their best to ruin the spectacle.

Hope is the key word Grizzly, I am not really confident to be honest....

Interesting, is the upside because of the potential inclusions you have highlighted? I also think we still have room for improvement, we have players running into form after long absences due to injury.

Agree that you'll be amongst it in September though.

If you look at the past Saints v Hawks home and away games before last Friday night, the Saints have an average winning margin of 30 points against us, so for the Hawks to come close to beating the Saints is a very good sign considering in our premiership year you guys flogged us..

yes agree it was a cracker of a game and would have even been better if that ground was not so dangerous , it is bad that collo did not in the past listen to any body when they said it was bad it was dangerous and it took that game to highlight it and the fact players came out said we have tried all type boots as he said it was a boot problem and it still was shocking and it proved it was not the boots!

there were enough injuries in the past to proved how bad it was Gibbo and Roo were enough to point that out let alone Lloyd and Danny Jacobs [ i am very sure these two who tore the hammy off the bone did it at the dome in the same year not the same round though correct me if i am wrong ] and others in the past
