Rumour Bailey Smith avoids being drafted interstate by way of medical reason

What do you think mate? A couple of hours on a plane to travel interstate is hardly the same as living there.

So you are aware of what his issues are!

We are all just presuming in this thread

Based on my one day psychology degree and reading the article about the presumed player in this discussion, I would be leaning towards OCD and anxiety (crippling) and having a family member who suffers from said diagnosis, moving away would be their worst nightmare. Even the initial interstate trips would be difficult until he has a routine that works for him down pat.

As much as I don’t like the fact he may have produced a medical certificate to avoid being drafted interstate, I do hope he is able to cope with the stresses of afl and has a good career

“Medical certificate” might just be liberties taken with terminology in reporting, and actually refer to much more extensive documentation. Universities, for example, will make concessions for students with mental health conditions, following detailed history, reports and internal interviews. Possibly as simple as a separate quiet room for examinations or a little extra time to submit assessments. Much lower organisational stakes than high draft picks for football clubs.

Smith could have been in therapy for years. Conditions like Bipolar or Borderline Personality Disorder are often life long and immensely susceptible to loss of structure or support networks. Some children are cursed by psychiatric genetics or have very hard lives for many reasons. While making no such suggestion in this case, it is not like the notion of adults such as sporting coaches treating charges indecently is unheard of, for example.

Whatever past he may or may not have had, he should not be further victimised by being forced to forgo pursuit of his dream career. It may also be best for his prospective employer/s to be aware of such risks upfront rather than making the discovery after contracts are signed.

If he medically can't go interstate, does this extend to travelling interstate week to week for games, or just living there? I don't know a lot about mental health, but assuming this is legitimate, wouldn't simply flying interstate for a week cause stress?

They go interstate for a day or two tops. Very different to moving interstate.

If you don't want to move interstate you probably shouldn't enter something called the NATIONAL Draft run by the AUSTRALIAN Football League.

One of my mates knows his best mate.

Definitely told clubs not to draft him. Didn't hear anything though about any medical reason. Typical elite private school kid from what I've seen and heard. It's not really surprising why him and a lot of these kids are so against a new start in a new state. Don't want to leave the comfortable cashed up life they live under their parents' noses and they've never been taught a thing about resilience.

Also this bloke seems like a complete and utter flog going off his Instagram. Bloke cries out for attention off Dylan Shiel and Tom Mitchell on his Instagram posts. Genuinely cringe worthy.

So you must be a flog if people you like as friends like people he likes as friends

Sorry did I hurt your feelings by saying something bad about one of your players?

And no. My mate's cousin is friends with Smith.

Hurt my feelings? How old are you champ? Looking forward to the school holidays?
First it was a mates best mate now it’s a mates cousins friend. Your story is all over the place. It sounds like the great TISM song about Shane Crawford

If a player doesnt want to or cant move interstate then they should be restricted from the draft. After spending a year playing state level they will likely rethink their position.

I hope the AFL cracks down on draftees minipulating the draft.
Hmmmm Did you make the same assertion when Wingard was 'upfront' with GWS about not going interstate??

Exactly. Who’s to say the Dogs didn’t suggest it? Who knows.
If you’re not prepared to travel don’t sign up.
That would be an awfully large risk to take to recruit one player. Bailey is a good junior talent but not one almost guaranteed to make us a premiership contender.

And to risk copping a two year draft penalty would be a major set back for the club. I don't think it would be worth the risk. If it got out that we had told him to tamper with the draft, AFL wouldn't have a choice but to come down hard IMO

that’s the issue though. There should not be any risk involved at all. These guys are supposed to be professional athletes and they’re earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, plus they get to remain in their home country. If they were playing any other elite sport in the world they would likely be living in a different country by the age of 16 - 18. If you can’t handle living a 2-3 hour flight away from home while earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year playing at the highest level of your chosen sport, then don’t sign up for the AFL, play VFL or whatever state league is closest to you.

It’s not ‘good’ that they’re being honest about not wanting to move interstate. It shouldn’t be happening at all.

Why do you get to decide the decisions of others?

I’m not deciding anything for anyone. These kids are signing up for a national draft in a national competition. If they’re not willing to move states in a competition that states that as a very possible outcome, then maybe playing a national level sport isn’t for them. State and local level teams can always use good young players on their lists too and there’s no risk of having to leave home then.

Yeah the mullet and shit. Bloke doesn't seem too short on confidence.

I think a lot of young guys don't want to leave simply because of the social standings. Imagine knowing a heap of people and then suddenly being the bloke who plays AFL? You can turn every semi-encounter you had with a chick down the Hawker two years ago into a root. You can swan around with your mates, now hangers-on, and take the piss out of them while they lap everything up. These guys just want to be the local big dogs.
