Could we be targeting Treloar ahead of Shiel purely because he's open to offers where Shiel is not?

I know Shiel is open to offers and has been changing his mind regularly on whether he will return home or not. If both him and Treloar leave it changes the landscape of the competition completely. Losing their 2 best on ballers (equal with Ward) rules them out of flag contention for the next 5 years. Both are genuine guns and top 20 players in the AFL within 2 years. I hope we go hard after both of them, if we can snare one it'll be brilliant.

The only way we get Treloar to Collingwood is through The Rock - Bring_Back_Brad any suggestions?

I love it - "Give me a hug" - funniest thing since "Right in front of me, we were robbed"

Is it that the club "thinking their guy is better" really the reason?

Or is it that consequences are too great if things go wrong?

A lot of it is clubs like to appear loyal to their players. And that long has been a concern for clubs regarding trades. Then players if they're contracted, that's another natural limitation with teams, with the likely outcome that a player won't agree to a trade.

I'd do a Reid/Treloar straight swap.

Both sides win imo. While Reid is more valuable when fit, the fact that he's not durable brings his value back and makes that trade about even. Remember, Reid only JUST turned 26. He's not exactly old.

GWS get their pants pulled down.

Reid may not have another 20 game season in him.

His injuries are re-occuring. His value like Fasolo for similar reasons makes him less valuable than seems to be assumed.

Treloar is probably the better player of the two today and will certainly play substantially more games from here on in. So Treloar is where the value is, and with GWS more likely to be premiership relevant five years from now rather than next year, they would be dropping the ball making that trade.

We would be completely ******ed to give up that much for a midfielder and a forward with a dodgy knee.

I can't stomach the idea of giving up Elliot, Witts AND our first rounder for anything other than Shiel and Treloar.

Patton, no. I mean, Patton is a good player but those injuries, damn.

Treloar at $700k and 5 years? He will laugh at that though. He's the GWS best young mid. He will get offers when he's coming to FA that are higher then that.
Would love it if he could end up with us but i cant see it happening.

Perhaps when in he is a free agent (which I assume is a few years away), but in the mean time he'd be paid more than he would otherwise be paid, and he would still have a few years of his career to go after the end of the deal.

Would you forgo $700K over five years on the off chance that you might get a better deal at some point during that period? Particularly when you are being paid substantially less than that now?

(2) Formally offering a player a contract during the year is in contravention of the AFL trade rules.

Nobody is formally offering anyone anything (as in giving them the paperwork to sign). As for informal offers to sound a player out - well we were on the receiving end of that last year iirc (can't quite remember who the player involved was though).

Hoping this pans out - much prefer him than Danger, at much higher cost, TBH

Wasn't he the guy that Pendles 'coached' when we played GWS a few years back ( sorry if mentioned before, haven't read all this thread)

Umm maybe you should read that again.. I said it's a fact that we MIGHT never see him again.. and then you edited to say that's a possibility.. when I just said the possibility was a fact... *facepalm*

Maybe I should type slower so you can grasp the meaning... No, it isn't a fact that we might never see him again, it's a possibility we might never see him again.

Facepalm alright!

And when his 5 year contract is done with us he will be a free agent.. ATM he is not a free agent

No he wouldn't. As far as I'm aware it has to be 8 years at the 1 club to qualify.

From what I have read it would be the other way around.
Treloar has never stated a desire to leave and in fact has stated he loves it their and urged all of them to stick to together and be part of history.
Sheil rumours have been circulating for a while now he want back to Vic.

His twitter also has a lot of love on it for his club.

Just an example many more.

Have you also noticed how his twitter profile has barely any reference to the Giants? Says "Sydney" and that's it. Most players have at least one photo of them relating to footy and say who they play for. But not our man!

Players must have served at least 8 years with the club to be restricted free agent, 10 years for unrestricted so Treloar would not be FA at Pies at end of a 5 yr contract. Yes rules may change – there has been talk about dropping it to 6 years but can only go by current rules. Also worth noting that current system expires end of 2016 so who knows what may or may not be in 5 years time.

The following is an excerpt from the player agent's handbook" co-written by ricky nixon and liam pickering

"When your player is up for a new contract, float the possibility that Collingwood is offering a high paying long term contract. This will encourage the players current club to increase its own offer."

when he's 67, he will become eligible for the old age pension, unless the rule changes. That will be over 40 years from now but it's a worthwhile debate....

A few need to settle down in this thread lol

Treloar would be a huge coup if he came. Patton's name shouldn't even be mentioned in this thread - not sure how it even came up. Treloar would be our 2nd or 3rd best midfielder next year if he came. Those in power need to make him or Shiel happen.
