No way is Reid by himself more valuable than Treloar. If he plays solidly through the back half of this season with no sign of injury then he has currency, but not for a top tier 21 year old midfielder.

Thinking of trading Reid is misguided IMO. Until he puts together a solid period of decent footy at AFL level, we will get severely reduced value for him.

Did you read my post? I said when fit. So, in a perfect world, where Reid isn't made of glass, a 26 year old All Australian defender is more valuable than a 21 year old gun mid. All day, every day.

Hence, why I said, Reid's fragility brings his value back to make it (in my opinion) more even.

But his fragility makes it not even. It is uneven in our favour. And I think Treloar is good enough that even if Reid was fit, it would still be in our favour. Do you really think Reid is going to play past 30 at this point?

Can't see how we will get a trade done, at the moment we look like finishing somewhere between 5-10 on the ladder. So pick 8-13. Pick 8 + what? Witts we can't let go, we don't have a 2nd ruckman, I can't see anyone else we'd be willing to give up, they would want a tall defender, Brown and Reid are too important to us, especially with Keefe gone.

Other Melbourne clubs will offer more. You can be sure Carlton and Melbourne will be after him also and they will have a much higher pick to trade.

GWS will lose one of those gun mids with all the money that will be thrown at them. If they match the 700k over 5yrs for Trelor it'll mean the following year they won't be able to keep someone else

Treloar is the best young mid in the competition. I would much prefer him to Dangerfield.

I don't know if we could offer up a decent trade for him, though. He would be in our best 4 if he played for us right now and is still 21. That's going to cost a lot. The trade would have to be something like Witts plus our first rounder for a start and I'm not sure even that would get it done.

I understand the comments about the importance of key backs but if the opportunity came up to trade a Reid or Brown for Treloar the club would do it in a heartbeat

It's a hard one to see getting done without costing us severely. There's no indication that Treloar wants to screw the Giants the way Beams screwed us by only nominating one club.

It's in Treloar's interests to have an open bidding war between the Melbourne clubs. So why would he lock us in at this point?

We either make an offer no one else will match (and 700k/5 years is very good, but others would pay it as well), or we satisfy GWS at the table, and they'll want what we can't afford to give up.

We have no depth in our key position stocks that we can afford to trade a best 22 player. If we trade a midfielder that would get the deal done, we cannibalize the very improvement we get from Treloar (who would get it done from our midfield roster? Sidebottom?). Witts might be the best option of a sucky bunch. Maybe we go the Hawks route and start poaching cheaper ruck role players to support Grundy?

Chip Frawley and Nathan Fyfe circa 2013? :p

Umm maybe you should read that again.. I said it's a fact that we MIGHT never see him again.. and then you edited to say that's a possibility.. when I just said the possibility was a fact... *facepalm*

But there's no point talking about prospects as facts. I could say it's a fact that Pendlebury might never play again or it's a fact that Patton might become the premier forward.

No-one knows what will happen with Reid nor with Patton. Patton is as big a risk as Reid imv in terms of injury.

If the AFL enables trading of future first rounders I'd be more than happy to trade this and next years first rd picks, still that's probably only like 2015 Pick 9 + 2016 Pick 12 dunno if that's enough? Would adding a fringe player to this make it adequate?

Sigh

(1) Ed is on the record saying "Proud Collingwood doesn't cheat".

(2) Formally offering a player a contract during the year is in contravention of the AFL trade rules.

Informal offer.

John Brown was offered in year deals twice by us. Ed tells porkys to please whomever his target audience is.

Like all clubs we "do our due diligence".

A Treloar and Patton deal if we're going full fantasy scenarios I imagine would look more like Treloar and Patton for Elliott, Witts, Reid and our first round draft selection.

And even then it's rarely so easy to get anyone interested in moving. And certainly not so many big time pieces on both sides.
We would be completely ******ed to give up that much for a midfielder and a forward with a dodgy knee.

Could we be targeting Treloar ahead of Shiel purely because he's open to offers where Shiel is not?

From what I have read it would be the other way around.
Treloar has never stated a desire to leave and in fact has stated he loves it their and urged all of them to stick to together and be part of history.
Sheil rumours have been circulating for a while now he want back to Vic.

“I love the club,” Treloar told the Daily Telegraph.

“I’ve got no plans to leave, it’s just a matter of time before I can get a deal organised. I’m definitely one who wants to sign.”

Treloar is one of many Giants including star forward Jeremy Cameron, Stephen Coniglio, Dylan Shiel and number one draft picks Jonathon Patton and Tom Boyd who are all out of contract at the end of next season. But Treloar believes he won’t be the only one to recommit to the fledgling club.

“I think it’s going to happen with a lot of other players,” Treloar said.

“Just because a lot of players haven’t signed yet a lot of people wonder if they we are going to leave because we’re from Melbourne but there are a lot of players who are going to re-sign at the end of this year or next year.”

His twitter also has a lot of love on it for his club.

Just an example many more.

This is pretty much what Giants fans think, Treloar seems like a guy who loves the club and wants to build, Shiel is probably on his way out

Also, for what it's worth - it would take a reasonably high end player to get Treloar from us. I wouldn't compare it to your unfortunate Beams deal last year because I just can't see him only wanting to play for Collingwood, I think if he wanted to leave - it would just be to return to Vic in general, not a specific club.

Yeah I agree would have to be quite the deal to get it over the line.

Sheil is the one who is most likely to shake loose and again a reasonable offer will need to be made.

I don't think Treloar will leave GWS. Seems content where he is. I wouldn't trust Barrett as far as I could throw him either.
I think Sheil is the more likely to want to come home. But every club would have made enquiries as to their intentions with their managers.
Barrett as always used us to create a story though. He produced nothing to back it up. The "Collingwood will deny it but it's true" is pretty pathetic.

I have a theory that this is a deliberate tactical leak from Collingwood. Treloar looks like he is going to stay, our plan bump up his price to squeeze someone like Shiel or WHE out. I really hope this is the case because as much as I like Treloar we need more outside ball users than in and under tough men.

Not only do "we" overate our players but we do it to opposition clubs as well, bunch of dreamers if people think he is in the top 20-25 players in the league, not worth 700k by a long shot!
At best a late first rounder and maybe a fringe player like Kennedy or Broomhead but that is it!

I think Treloar is just a really level headed young guy which comes out in everything he does. He's a leader of the club and I think regardless of where he goes I think he would continue promoting the club as we see above.

I think he genuinely he appreciative of the chances his been given at AFL football and is prepared to give back, whether that includes loyalty I'm not sure and I guess we'll see.

Doesn't seem like the type of bloke to move on for money so if he leaves GWS it would be under some duress I think, but would probably be just to be back in Melbourne with family.

Perhaps our supposed interest in Treloar is just a ruse.

If he is so happy at GWS can't see him leaving unless other clubs offer him significantly more money.

Seems a waste of time.
