Tonight is a prime eg with issues the bbl has, school holidays over, Melbourne lashed with wild weather and the match finishes at 10.30pm. Kids aren’t getting home until midnight. Not ideal really.

"I wish the bbl would end...so I can watch other cricket on Foxtel and aflw."
mate, there's a thing called commitments. Why would anyone attend a game when they have to go to school or work the next day. Even if matches are played on weekends, then people will probably forget that it is on after 4 weekdays of no action. I usually start to forget by the 20th of Jan before finals!

It's not just about the fans though. Mitchell Johnson declined to play this season because it was too much workload for his body, therefore the standard drops off. I'm sure for many other players in Bangladesh at the moment that is the case. We've got grade cricketers like Maneti and Jewell and Hobson playing for goodness sake. Not denying their talent, but are those people drawing people through the gates. No.

They're trying to become the IPL, but the market here is totally different. Aussies just want a hit and giggle, not a full blown tournament. See backyard cricket for example, Players drink beers while batting and bowl underarm to children. No wonder Australian consumers don't like seeing long tournaments. Tactics are natural progression, but a longer season does not need to be the same.

The final should have been played this past weekend, play more double headers in that early January period to fill in the fixture, either way this needs to be done and dusted the same weekend as the tennis.

I really feel like some people over-rate the pulling power of the big names of cricket. Most casual cricket fans could barely name a cricketer from outside Australia and the ones who can are probably the ones still following the games.

The Renegades and Thunder crowds are about the same now as they were when they had Chris Gayle playing for them. Its not like crowds increase when teams are playing Adelaide as the best bowler in the world is coming to town (Rashid Khan).

There's also this thing called international T20s where you can watch the best players in the world play every year in Australia (depending on who is touring). All we ever hear about them is that they are shit.

Actually the Renegades are averaging 10,000 less than the year Gayle played for them...

That is caveat-ed by the fact they've played 2 games in Geelong plus last nights game outside of school holidays but yep fair point. Do you think that is because of a lack of big names though?

FMD.

In today's Australian.

Pretty sure I cant post the whole article so here's a an excerpt.

CA planned for even more BBL matches

Cricket Australia officials were so determined to squeeze every drop out of the Big Bash League that they floated a plan to expand it to a staggering 72 games.
Amid growing disquiet over the length of the current 59-game season after just 8083 people turned up to watch the Sydney Sixers at the SCG on Tuesday night, the full extent of CA’s bullishness about expansion during TV rights negotiations last year can be revealed.

Talks during high-level meetings even raised the possibility of a hypothetical 96-game model in planning for the future.

Lack of big names plus tournament dragging on has equaled a lot less interest. Even their last home game drew only 10,000 and the Geelong crowds only averaged about 1500 less than their Marvel average. That’s been brought down by 2 10,000 crowds.

The entire tournament is lacking interest. Perth is probably the only ones with an increased attendance

This week should be the finals.

The higher cap and more internationals would make it more interesting, but they should also have those double and triple header days in that Christmas and New Year period when they know most people are off work and it's too hot outside to do anything.

They could end the regular season on Australia Day with all 8 teams playing. Start with an afternoon game in Hobart, twilight in Sydney, night games in Melbourne and Perth. 4 games, none clashing

yeah, your post was garbage

"Mid December to mid February is fine. What is the extended length of the tournament stopping you from doing?"

I'm sorry that you fail to comprehend how the BBL season is impacting on Australian first class and Test cricket. It has nothing to do with the tennis, AFLW, AFLX, AFL, etc etc. Our concerns are about CRICKET. Some of us, clearly not you, are able to look at things holistically, but sure, you stay in your little corner because you can't think outside your BBL box. If you hadn't realised, Australia is the 5th ranked Test side in the world and a LONG way behind the likes of India, South Africa, New Zealand, and dare I say, England.

There are two issues. The number of games and how long it takes to get through them. How many days with no games? How many double-headers?

So I thought I would present some data so that we have something to discuss.

First thing I would say is that the season should start a week earlier.

The Launceston game on Thursday starts at the same time. No one is going to travel from either the NW coast or Hobart on a work night for that.

Plus the fact that kids won't be getting home in Launceston by 11 on a school night and you could have a recipe for the lowest attendance for a BBl match ever. You have cut off a large number of people who could attend the match. You host that match on an afternoon on the weekend and you be looking at 10K.

So, I find it a bit rich of the TV companies to complain about declining interest.

We had a crowd of 11K for a 4pm game midweek today, which is damn good considering that. I reckon that will be higher than next Thursdays game starting at 7:40.

Well, the people of Launny have made me a fool. Looks like a good crowd(10K at least).

Sometimes, being a big fish in a small pool is better than being small fish in a big pond.

I reckon a big part of the problem with the big bash is there are too many teams and too many players.

My mate and i spent some time after training tonight coming up with "mediocre t20 player/overrated/washed up big bash XI" and the fact you can see these players play regularly indicates how poor the cricket is.

Ben Dunk
Tim Ludeman
Nic Maddinson (c)
Beau Webster
Seb Gotch
Evan Gulbis
Cameron Valente
Nathan McAndrew
Sam Rainbird
Michael Beer
Joe Mennie

What a great team the side above is. Theyd be 1/25 after the powerplay and might cobble together 120.

Bowling first they would cough up 200 plus!!

Shame Jono Dean, Jason Floros and the Gannon Cannon weren't offered contracts as theyd have been walk up starts.

Id love to see other people make their mediocre XI's

I’m struggling to comprehend Lynn’s comments about burnout. That’ll deadset do me that is an absolute copout. Maybe the word he was looking for is ‘bored’ or ‘disinterested’ which is a given when your waiting to play games that have no bearing on your team making finals.

Besides maybe the travel, how can players be ****ing burnt out like certain players are claiming? Maybe if you are a 40 year old retiree on their last legs but we have comments coming from players in their late 20’s who are suppose to be professional athletes.

Even if you are a fast bowler, the maximum amount of overs you can bowl through the regular season is 56 overs (14 games x 4 overs) that equates to 336 balls over a 7 week period. That’s like 48 balls a week on average!

I mean credit for Lynn for saying it as it is but **** me it’s rich coming out of his mouth. Maybe he is mentally fatigued from shit captaincy job he is doing. Besides the 2 decent innings he has played, most matches he is only out in the middle for 2 overs dead panning spinners until he inevitably gets out to one of them and then he fields inside the circle where his shoulder prevents him from over exerting himself in the field. He’d be ****ing lucky to cover 2km a game most days. How can he be ****ing burnt out? Not only that but it’s not like he has to back up after this tournament and play 4 shield matches in quick succession like most of his teammates will be. There was also I believe a 10 day break between the 2nd and 3rd Heat game this season as well. And it’s not like these guys slog it out at training in between games. Half The time they are just having a hit in the nets and brushing up on some fielding drills.

Shield cricketers must be sick to their stomachs hearing BBL players are ‘burnt out’ what a laugh!
I’m no athlete but I reckon I could put my body through 2 x 20 over Games a week for 7 weeks without much fuss and these guys are being payed good money to top it off. Spinners especially should be able to play a BBL match every day. They’d bowl more overs in the nets in one day than they would in half a dozen BBL matches.

I love me some Chris Lynn but **** me this year especially his profile is ****ing going downhill at a rate of knots I can’t even defend him anymore. His captaincy leaves a lot to be desired, his burnt out comments reek of a soft attitude, can’t field because of his shoulder and he can’t even hit a ball square off of a pub spinner.

Might be time to change my avatar and my username. Rant over.

Jordan Silk played for North Hobart T20 team last weekend. He obviously isn't tired.

It is a cop out if he is tired from the number of games. Perhaps the length of the tournament. But then, he is at home. Think of the people who have to live away from home for 2 months.

Living in a hotel for 2 months would be a bit of a grind, I can understand that. But then again a lot of those blokes could’ve signed for their home teams if they wanted to.

And not sure why there are no games from Monday through to Wednesday next week.
