Unsure how such an average player was ever made captain of his country. Bloke has no idea and beyond me how he has landed a coaching gig when he finished up
He was better than an "average player", regardless of what you think of his coaching.

What was it 1 first class hundred to his name and a gutless cricket Australia not wanting to blood a young keeper from a hated state? Was very very average, just so happened to play for the same state Bailey did

His batting stats were average, he leap frogged a few players because of his leadership and at the time he wasn't scandal ridden after sandpaper gate
Rubbish. There truly is some stupid shit posted on these boards.

He averaged 32 at Test level. His Test batting record currently sits at pretty much equivalent to Carey and (average wise) comparable to Haddin.

Scored over 10,000 f-c and List A runs combined at better than 30, with 11 hundreds. Averaged 29.6 at f-c level and 33 in List A cricket.

Plus he was one of the best keepers in the country - which is the principal reason he was selected.

The only criticism that can be levelled at him was his inability to convert more f-c 50s into 100s.

Feel free to criticize his appointment to the captaincy, and his coaching, but he was a very good cricketer.

Amazing work for George Bailey to pick the side three years before actually becoming a selector.

Fun fact: Two of the four selectors that actually did pick Paine were South Australians.

Bowling attack has been awful all season. Logic would've suggested that an international quick was a necessity in the draft but they went with Allen who then got injured first game and they made no effort to rectify that. Behrendorff would be great if he was available, if not even a cooked Andrew Tye would be an improvement. Batting hasn't really been an issue for a few seasons now.
