At the end of the day Richmond were the better team that finals series. Their system in which they moved the ball was insane. We struggled to match Richmonds speed. I think the club has addressed need with the recruitment of Ah Chee, Birchall and natural development of Starcevich, Bailey and Answerth. I suspect Witherden will be on the outer next season due to his lack of leg speed.

I feel like witho might surprise us this year. He definitely doesn't have the best leg speed but if he can take the next step in terms of effectively utilising his kicking ability he should be able to cover for that.

If he does take the next step just imagine how damaging our transition could be with richy and an improved witho sending the ball forward quickly and efficiently out of the back fifty

Would be genuinely surprised if Witho isn't best 22 all year. Elite user of the football and is quite good defensively. Still needs to develop that part of his game, but it's come on in a huge way compared to previous years.

He really stepped up his contested marking this year.

I felt Witho was much less creative/damaging with his disposal last year compared to 2018. The plus side was that he had less of those shocking turnovers but it would be good to see him find some middle ground where he can still look to be creative and damaging.

That was no doubt due to clear direction from his coaches. Tbh it shows how coachable he is though.

The main area that killed us against Richmond at the Gabba, was our woeful kicking for goal at the East end of the ground.

There was a strong wind blowing across the face at goal, from the Stanley street side to the Vulture street side.

I lost count of the amount of missed goals when kicking from the Vulture street wing/flank, where we would kick for Goal, only to see the ball sail through for a Point.

Yet Richmond never missed from the same side of the ground.

In regards to Witherden.

I expect Witherden to play the Hodge roll starting the season, and for a new player to step in as a HBF’er.

Whether that’s Birchall, Starcevich or Ah Chee.

Answerth to start on the bench as our 7th defender.

Accuracy at goal was a weirdly recurring issue at the gabba. If we can clean that up next year it should be enough to get us over the top of the big teams coming to town during the season

This was definitely an occasion where we didn’t account for a strong wind and Richmond did.

It was pretty clear from where I was sitting.

Yeah I agree with that but hope he is encouraged to find more of a balance next year.
You see it in many sports where kids come in and show a lot of natural flair in their first season, only for it to be “coached out” of them as their careers progress.

The same happened with Rayner last year.

It’s not a negative. It’s about playing to a game plan, playing “responsibly” or “smart”, and about learning when it’s ok to take risks or show that natural flair.

As the old saying goes, you cant teach experience. But now we have it. Also Richmond had a freak that day with his kicking - Dusty just couldn't miss.

Agreed. When players like Witherden and Rayner find the balance, they will be very dangerous. I think both found a pretty good balance in 2019. Once Rayner gets more of the ball, watch out!

I thouht the reason why we had trouble and Richmond didn't was because of their defense. They forced us to mark the ball on the 50 and/or near the boundary line, whereas our terrible lack of defensive midfield running meant they could mark the ball right in front only 20-40m out.

There a few things that contributed to our loss. If we had kicked straighter we would have been in the contest.

Many of their scores came from rebounding our turnovers, and they’re the best team at scoring from rebounds.

Because we played down the line, when we turned the ball over, we were open to a quick kick in infield, which then opened us up.

Also we didn’t defend their set up from kick ins from the goal square appropriately. They almost always had a kick in to an open man on the boundary in their defensive 50.

When I was at my worst as much as I wanted to do nice/good things for other people either analysis-paralysis and inertia or self-sabotage and destruction would win out, so I'm looking at this through my own lens. I think this will be one of the last things for him to regret if he is looking back from a better personal headspace than what he has reportedly been in.

In addition, I always heard that he went above and beyond his contracted community outreach obligations throughout his time at both clubs even if his demons have led to some poor choices otherwise.
