If I am reading Wikipedia correctly, following were Band 1 compo picks:
  • Dale Thomas 2013
  • Buddy Franklin 2013
  • James Frawley 2014
  • Tom Rockliff 2017*
  • Steven Motlop 2017*
  • Tom Lynch 2018
  • Joe Daniher 2020
  • Zac Williams 2020

*I think were Band 2 compo but not 100% sure
Rockliff and Motlop were band 2.

Perfect world there is no compensation. I feel the thing to remember is there is an element of socialism to the Free agency comp, other wise solely the players value would determine the value of the compensation

If a club offer a two contract high enough for the afl to trigger band1... then a very early comp pick for a defender would be delivered to a bottom side. In a way reminsent of Frawley

The fairness of his second contract being a lot less will be other to assess.

Barrass is contracted until 2027. Clubs will be taking on his deal if he's looking for a new start.
Ok.
29 next year. But if the eagles can get something for him then they should deal.

I don’t think McKay is worth 800k. But he will be added to a long list of over paid players if he gets it.
Any club chasing Barrass is one less in the market for McKay.

Another that missed the point. He played 1 year at the Giants - I know he wasn't a free agent.
Then talk of Band 1 'compensation' is irrelevant then....

The Boyd trade was trade value for a contracted player. Is Pick 2 the going rate for players of equivalent value of Lachie Weller that sign as free agents? Nope.

Equating the two (FA compo vs Trade value) is a nonsense

Motlop was band 2 but Rockliff was band 3.

IIRC there was a hint of controversy at the time because the deals were very similar. However Geelong needed a better pick to give to GC for Ablett so the mystery formula worked its magic again.

That mystery formula is the only hope North have of getting Band 1 for McKay. Even to get Band 2 would require some creative charity from the AFL.

Agree - 1 and it’s a massive gift. 2 is the real mark. As a Roo - hoping for a gift. Another Sheezel and Wardlaw would be nice.

1 is a free hit - the other will cost you.

Barrass in contract isn’t going cheap.
Oh so there is a difference between players traded and free agents.

He might get it eventually boncer.

Either way. McKay will likely end up at Sydney is my bet
Awesome - they love handing out big fat long contracts. With buddy retiring and maybe both McCartins everyone wins.

Although watching Laverde and Zerk on the weekend maybe ess lose. Another team in desparate need of a key defender.

I rate Zerk but not as the main stopper. I think he would be great as a second KPD who can float off as an intercepter.

Laverde will hopefully be pushed out by Baldwin soon who has shown good signs as a stopper and has the weight to hold his own on the monsters.

Correct - you don't have a key back - Baldwin is a long shot to make it and the kids you drafted as Key Backs are either injured or struggling.

Firrito and Grima all over again for Scott.

Not sure we’re in the position to fork out for a win now KPD especially after investing so much draft capital into key position defenders in recent drafts.

Only need two of Hayes, Reid, Cox, Baldwin and Zerk to step up and become good AFL players to play alongside Ridley who has been a jet and due to his height and athleticism can play CHB or as a 3rd tall.

Amon was only Band 3 as well which royally ****ed us off. I can only assume he is on a 4x600 type deal as we would have offered the same. IMO Mckkay has to do ALOT to justify that he is a more than a 4x600k player. Based on form, He would have been playing for our SANFL side up until about a month ago if he was at Port. I would think band 1 would have to be in the 5x800 range now and I'd be punching holes in walls if we offered him that.

The biggest hole in Ports squad is full back. 5x800 may well get you a flag. He is head and shoulders better than McKenzie, Jonas and Clurey
Sometimes overpaying is exactly what you should do to get to the next step - and enticing a Victorian born player over he is going to go for the largest contract.

I agree. The injuries worry me though.
If it was just poor form I wouldn't hesitate on pulling the trigger.

Amon wasn't/isn't that good. Probably the same as Brandon Ellis, who needed a similar compo pick for Richmond when he joined Gold Coast

I just don't really like the compo system at all.
