You can’t just match an offer and call it a day.

If McKay wants out he’s out and it will be in North’s best interest to take band 1 compo considering where they’ll likely finish next season. He has all the power in where he will play in 2024.

Would be hilarious to see them match and accept less in a trade but the people running the club will be smarter than emotional supporters.
Theoretically, you could. But we haven't seen this happen in the AFL system yet. Happens all the time in the NBA.

If the player wants to leave they will leave. When you can get a top four pick for him you'd be mad not to take it.

Hopefully for North's sake he re-signs.

Agree to disagree. If he had all the power, he would be an unrestricted FA with nothing getting in his way. The fact that we can match any offer, gives us power. It’s also worth noting that the bidding club may not want to enter into a trade. If the bid fails, they potentially walk away not wanting to pay a heavy price.
He doesn’t even have the myth power of the PSD because we will finish lower than any club he potentially wants to go to.

We probably would in all honesty accept band 1 compo, especially if we finish bottom 4. In saying that, I wouldn’t be against the club matching and forcing a trade for an elite player of equivalent value. What we desperately need are players in the 24-26 age bracket. We will most likely add another top 4 player this year and potentially a top 10 player with the Port pick. We are going to be littered with 18-20 year olds and the last thing we need is to lose an elite 25 year old. We will just tread water further or go backwards further by going down that path in my opinion.

The issue there is if it came to it he would go in the ND not the PSD. But i get where you are coming from.

Yeah, but you could say this for anyone.

If Cripps wants out, he’s out.
If Walsh wants out, he’s out.
If Weitering wants out, he’s out.
If H. McKay wants out, he’s out.

etc.

I couldn't think of any more Carlton players, tbh.

Tend to agree with the bolded part in particular. Case in point is the JHF trade, which was much more sensible in real life than on BigFooty.

If BMac decides he wants to leave and we'd get a top 3 pick for him as an RFA, I doubt Rawlings would stop the move. The key with McKay is for us to show improvement this season, to convince him to stay. I think getting Logue in to support will go a long way in 2023.

All the above are signed on long term contracts.
Ben McKay will be an OOC FA …

Don't get why some are getting ansy in here.

If Ben wants to leave, he will leave. No club is matching unless they are at the other end of the table and the compensation would be less than a possible trade.

We wouldn't have that problem more than likely.

He hasn't signed an extension and is entering the last season of his deal, naturally there will be talk.

I daresay the first 5-6 rounds will determine his decision, if there's no major improvement, he will probably look to move on and play in a finals side, with Carlton being an obvious one. I wouldn't begrudge him that, honestly. He deserves to play finals footy, hopefully it is with us though...

No doubt he will demand a Band 1 style contract, as he was the leading intercept defender in the league last year.

If he goes to North and says that he wants out and wants to play elsewhere, and North have a top 4 pick, then of course North would take the compo.

But if he comes to North and says that Carlton offered him $X, and asks if North are willing to match then I don't think that there would be an offer out there that North wouldn't match. Even knowing that they would get a top 4 pick if he leaves.

The latter is what I was referring to earlier.

I fully expect him to stay at North, but until he puts pen to paper, there will always be interest in one of the most valuable young KPD'a in the game..

You can pretty much count joining his brother Harry at Carlton out (no cap space)

I would assume he would stay in Victoria, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn and St Kilda would all be very keen.

But as I say, I would be astonished if he left NMFC

Blues can free up cap space.

Mitch McGovern can move to Freo to help solve their forward line issues. $ 650k.

Maybe they let Martin go as well. $400k in 2023 after front loading in early years.

There is your Ben McKay offer covered with change left over.

McKay takes McGovern's role in defense is just bigger and better.

Martin can be covered by one of the young guys coming through or one of the new guys Acres, Hollands, Carroll, Fogarty, Williams or Honey.
