How long until their seniors make a case to the bfnl? Obviously they wouldn’t be able to compete at the moment but you have to think they see their future in the bfnl

The initial plan was for maiden gully 18’s to take up the vacant spot of Maryborough but they obviously have got up and going.

Word is tbe the entire Maiden Gully club is on the move to HDFL next season

Juniors is going to be struggle for all lvfl clubs. You'd think that the the north central league will merge eventually with LV, but they are struggling for juniors as well
LV clubs would get destroyed in the North Central league.

Think it’s inevitable there will be changes but thinking outside the square perhaps Maiden Gully could look at the BFNL. Its in a growth area, has strong juniors and with more housing development and population growth, would be well placed to go into the major league. Could be a struggle initially but could be a good proposition over the long term.

I can’t understand why those at AFL Central Victoria haven’t looked at placing a BFNL team out at Epsom Huntly Reserve. It’s also a growth area (more development and population growth than Strathfieldsaye) and surely a major league team would benefit being located there. It would provide opportunity for players to play at a higher level in areas to the north of the city.

The Epsom/Huntly facility is an absolute white elephant and is in no way suitable for a club to be permanently based there

White elephant?

The soccer and rugby pitch are great additions to that area. The football grounds get plenty of use, can't see a team ever calling it home but I don't think that was ever the intention.

There's an absolute shitload of houses been built in Huntly, they should be a powerhouse in years to come

Nothing wrong with the playing surfaces at all but the placement of the amenities such as change rooms etc was not well planned and is really quite inconvenient for regular club footy

Yeah but as I said I don't think that was ever the intent.

Didn’t someone suggest in an earlier post that a club should be located there? That’s why I was making my comment
Fair enough. I thought you were saying it was a white elephant in general.

Think this whole discussion belongs to a larger conversation that should be taking place but isn't.

Surely it is time for a regional wide conversation about restructuring the leagues into an AFLCV competition where clubs can move up and down tiers depending on performance.

The BFNL is slowly losing relevance as a major competition and badly needs a change and the other leagues in the reason have huge issues as well. Time to bring it all together and create something sustainable.

It's not just about population growth but also socio-economic (aka Money). Strath is not only a growth area but an affluent area with lots of money and business/sponsorship connections. If it was just population growth Flat would be dominating the BFNL with growth in their area.

Demographics and socio economic factors certainly play a huge part

Demographics and socio economic factors certainly play a huge part

Castlemaine is a good example of this. One of the big factors that has hurt the club has been the transition of the town into a 'tree change' mecca.

Different socio economic groups, less likely to support a local footy club and a reduction in the pool of players in the community.

The club has worked for a long time to get a women's team up. Achieved it for this year and straight away a bunch of Northcote tree changers decided to start a version of the Darebin Women's team in town because traditional footy clubs don't meet their social agendas. Now both battling for players, sponsors, support etc in the one town.

Any news anyone on recent practice matches or late recruits anywhere other than what we read about sandhurst in the advertiser the other day?

First time poster here - so much talk about juniors across so many threads - reality is bendigo football won’t change with the current layouts and stockpiling of kids at 3 clubs

Square strath and sandhurst have huge numbers at 14s and 16s level - not only numbers but a lot of talent - 106 tried out for strath 14s is my mail - flows through to 18s when 40 kids trying out for 24-28 spots at those clubs - and they don’t formalise lists until late and then other clubs and smaller leagues get the scraps - been happening since the early 90s and we wonder why it so the case

And I agree that the Epsom Huntly reserve is terrible - blows a gale most weeks has no cover and is a terrible layout - don’t think it was ever intended to be anything other than a training facility and it it was just another failure by the City of Greater Bendigo and whoever else financed it - the planners should be held to account on it !
