Another spirited showing from the Magpies in the intra club at the Camp today.

Very different Gisborne to last year but 77 points is progress.

If the Castlemaine blokes playing for Gisborne had stuck fat the result would have been much different.

Great win by Square... would be interested if the Strath sides went different ways.... one side to one pub, and the reserves to another....

Watched the live stream of the Kyneton/Sandhurst match and sadly I think Kyneton have gone a long way backwards. It was a very disappointing performance at home where they traditionally play their best football. The Dragons were without the likes of Andy Collins, Lee Couglan, Joe Wharton and others which on paper made them look a little vulnerable. I have never seen a team so slow/reluctant to bring the team into their forward line as the Tigers were yesterday. Why why why ?????

Square would have to be the flag favourite, but it is still pretty wide open. As for the final five Strath, Gisborne and Eaglehawk will be there so I believe it will be out of Sandhurst and South to make up the final spot. One good team is going to miss out. I cannot bring myself to discussing Maryborough and Castlemaine - just totally depressing .

Where's Bev?

Was at the game and Kyneton have gone a long way backwards, what’s the word around town Bev? Wonder if chapman will see the year out…..

Think it’s going to be a long year for Kyneton. After making a lot of progress last year it appears they may be going backwards at a rapid rate. Have they done the wrong thing by throwing all their ‘eggs in the one basket’ through Chapman and a couple of high priced recruits. With no depth it seems once Kyneton get a few injuries they are going to be in trouble.

in regards to Maryborough it has been a horrible start and things can only improve. Didn’t have a go against Castlemaine and smashed yesterday. What was supposed to be a development year with improvement isn’t going as planned. It’s only 2 games in but things not great. On a positive note the under 18 team is going to be right up there this year and apparently smashed Eaglehawk yesterday. Hopefully the young men hang around as they are the future of the club. Patience is a virtue.

It certainly says a lot for the competition if we think the finalists are decided already too. Once again a really predicable year looks likely which isn’t great for “neutral/ interested” fans.

Personally, I think it’s ordinary for a strong club to go after players from a struggling club in the same league.

Might be an old fashioned view but to me it reflects poorly on the character of the club and the players.
Yep I think it should be 4 points us a point for every ladder position, Castlemaine were 9th last year, Gisborne first, should 4+8 =12points each, it would stop it pretty quick.

What?

It was a top game of country footy with a huge crowd there to witness it with a bit of star power in Jack Ginnivan and Dyson Daniels in attendance

Is chappy working with the juniors as well? He's record coaching hasn't been super, Greenvale was ok, central's just average, and won't play finals in 3 years at Kyneton, and if he leaves at the end of the year, is the club in a better position through the development of locals?

Beautifully simple and sensible, yet our AFL overlords can’t see it.

At some point they will realise the country clubs face insurmountable challenges without equalisation, as we are seeing yet again with Kyneton.

If we want a fair dinkum competition where any team can beat any other the measures need to be introduced to even out the advantages some clubs have over others in terms of population etc

Local, hopefully Kyneton can improve as the season goes on and at least give some hope for the future to their dedicated supporters, especially in their home games. Chapman's appointment created interest and expectation which was good, but your comment about no depth is spot on. Last year Eaglehawk and Sandhurst had some very talented players, but paid the price of having no depth at the business end of the season.

I don't think the finalists are decided already. South Bendigo were written off by many before the season started, but look pretty competitive to me (admittedly from a distance). Last year there were seven competitive teams who could realistically make the finals. This year it is six.

Overall though you are spot on about the league being predictable. At the end of the day there is only minor shuffling at the top. Eaglehawk is back as a real force but they only slipped up last year anyway. Kyneton and Kangaroo Flat probably offer the most hope for another competitive team in the next 2-3 years. I would be great if they can improve, otherwise it is just going to be more of the same.

I would be very suprised if he saw the year out.
Has no great coaching record yet seems to demand plenty of $$
If the $75 k amount is correct that his on per year then to me for that he would /should be involved with juniors and always available for press etc
Personally I think Kyneton have put the cue in the rack this year and it will be a very very long year for them.

Why would they get manual again, if that's the case?

Hack we have to be a little careful in this situation. For a start Chapman did a pretty good job last year and they were unlucky not to make the finals. His appointment certainly bought a lot of vibe to the club and I believe they drew some very good crowds - just what the competition needed. We are also only two weeks into the season. Coping a belting at Wade Street can happen to just about anyone. It was the performance at home against Sandhurst that was so poor, but even then they won their fair share of the ball. It was their delivery and turnovers that killed them. If Chapman was sacked I think it would destroy the morale of the club and probably see player walking out. Look what Castlemaine have done over recent years. You don't won't to go down that road. The Kyneton faithful have worked so hard off the field since being in recess and their supporters have responded.

Hence Kyneton have a lot to play for regardless of whether they make the finals this year and that includes giving hope to their dedicated supporters. They do have some talented players, but need to play as a team. When Daryl Wilson coaches he makes it really clear he is not interested in individual heroics and he is no mug. Success comes from team football. A week can be a long time in football so let us see how they go next Saturday. I think the Tiger's next goal should be to build some depth which will take a little time.

I’m not saying sack him , I’m saying if performances continue like the weekends I believe he will walk , just my opinion.
His a relative inexperienced coach with not really many runs on the board and comes with a huge price tag , to me it doesn’t seem worth it but I’m not the one making the decisions there , just an outsider looking in.
There’s no doubt those behind the scenes worked hard no questions there.
The depth is the huge issue, have a bad run with injury and there could be some serious nasty results coming their way.
Like you said it’s round two and if they happen to turn it around then good luck to them
