I would have thought the first thing would be to determine where the club will play going forward.

You aren’t going to get a coach signing without that info and you aren’t going to know what sort of coach you need either.

Rick andrews
Ben Lavers
Jeff Brennan
Jamie bond
Justin Abram's

All good footy resumes, none have been able to turn the club around and play finals.
Andrews signed on for 3 years and lasted 1.

All of those guys have coached and been good coaches, none could break down the barriers between with mcdfl clubs and get 2-3 real a graders to help.

I'd they don't go and spend and get a mcguane, Cresswell, knight, Wilson Daniels, Stevie j type, they have to go into the central highlands and stick with perry.

They need to decide if they want to play major league footy and then they've got lure the best big name coach available that can get 5 a graders and entice the best players in and enhance their juniors.

They are at the crossroads as a club.

If they want to stay in the Bendigo league (and I think they’d have rocks in their heads to consider it) they need to reach out to AFL managers and get a Hartley type.

Recently delisted 25-30 year old who would play and commit for 5 years and bring a few with him. Someone who is looking to relocate to close by with a young family.

Then they aim to win a game or two next year, and get back to finals region by three years when the current 18s start to filter through.

Would be an expensive and incredibly demanding task.

Alternatively they sit back, appoint Perry and play Maryborough Castlemaine. Everyone can relax and enjoy themselves. I don’t even see why it is a choice to be honest.

A town that size can't be in the mcdfl

The giants are an amalgamation of rovers and royal Park, two clubs that have struggled for a decade in the mcdfl. You can't go from a top 8 league in the state to one of the bottom 5

Top 8 might be a fraction optimistic.

I can’t see an issue with them going in there, doubt if they would be any better than 4-6th at the moment.

Well still.top 8 in country footy. Sandhurst and gisborne would play finals in any comp in the state
And Golden Square, Eaglehawk & Strathfiedsaye over the last decade have been at this level and will be again no doubt. You can see them improving - even since the start of this year and I bet all three are looking to cause an upset in September and sneak into the Grand Final. So the top five BFNL teams would no doubt be consistently competitive in any comp in the state.

Country clubs like Castlemaine Maryborough (and Kyneton up to last year) are at a massive disadvantage. Their populations have not exploded like Bendigo has in the last 25 years. LFG summed this fact up really well on how this has impacted Maryborough in his time with the club. You can chuck in the conspiracy theories if you like but this population disadvantage is the core of the problem these clubs face.

Hence if Castlemaine and Maryborough are to succeed in the BFNL there as to be less clubs around them which means mergers. Roota has been making this point for quite some time. On paper it is as simple. In reality very hard to achieve. In Maryborough's situation I think they need to merge with the Giants just to survive anywhere. If these clubs don't merge with local teams around them they will need (be forced) to go down the Kyneton path moving from the BFNL to find on field success.

The problem as set out above is really clear. With this in mind I think the best the BFNL can realistically hope under its present structure is a healthier eight team competition.

I know he has commitments and it probably creates difficulties, but what about someone like Josh Jenkins. Would nearly pass through Maryborough on his way to the Mallee to play footy each week.

He's based in Geelong, which.lavars struggled with and he's got media commitments, unless he made a doco on it and it showed how he's grown as a coach to get back into an afl system, I can't see him doing it. He only plays for sea lake because he's brother in law coaches there

Don’t under sell the regular visits to the salt lake at night to see the stars.

He cant make it to all games as it is. Cant imagine him making it to training either.

There's no one close to Hartleys level in the mcdfl or hendersons

There’s not many in Bendigo either.

Kal Huntly was playing there last year and would be beating both of them in the best and fairest, Frost at Eaglehawk was out at Harcourt previously as well.

No doubt there’s some really poor sides but I think the top few are pretty reasonable.

Castlemaine would win the mcdfl flag by 25 goals
