I don't represent the Addy in any capacity, but my guess would be it would simply be a bottom line, $ issue. One that is facing every newspaper in the world at the moment.

If the addy make this content available online, what do they get out of it apart from a few more hits to their website on a Saturday?

If they hold off until Monday, people that are interested buy the paper don't they? Online content currently represents no $ value to the addy until paywalls are introduced.

My 2c.

I think you'll find that online newspapers generate significant revenue streams through advertising charges based on the number of hits a site attracts.

Its a tough situation the Bombers one. Nobody wants to take them to task for fear off upsetting them. The Advertiser sure wont do it and 3BO wont as they have agreements with them. Fresh sort of did (loosley) but they clearly look for any excuse not to travel here. Question, how many Bendigonians who are corporate sponsors or Essendon supporters hold Bendigo Bombers memberships......wouldnt be many. They dont do much to indear themselves to the community. As for the 3BO boys, thats how they interview everybody, mate this and Jossy that.
I just hoped they asked some tough questions and it wasnt in effect another statement where Joss just teed of at the city. Clearly they havent spoken to the council as the stories of their withdrawl and the QEO upgrade broke on the same day. Cr Peter Cox, said they hadnt even got a commitment from the Bombers, let alone a contribution for the upgrade. I spoke to the VFL CEO Peter Schwab, all he said is, "that it was disappointing", clearly had very little idea on the subject...

Coxy bags anything outside of the borough though. Interesting though, talking to one of the guys at the Council he said that they have not asked for a contribution and probably won't because they don't expect that Sandhurst and Sth Bendigo or the league would cough up and they don't think that it should be the Bombers only.

Don't forget there are 100 games at the QEO this year and the Bombers only wanted it for 9 - so most of the benefit is for local footy.

I for one would love a new QEO, if we have to use the Bombers to get the cash to for it, well why not then?

interesting this year not as many people are bagging out the bombers is this because the clubs can see the benefits that the club was talking about for years?

Finally, someone said it! Thanks REMfooty. We're in the situation we are now because too many people have the "what's in it for me" blinkers on. What people have to realise is that there's no way we'll attract any money from state/feds if we don't pool our applications together. for example... Arden St, Western Bulldogs, Princes Park developments... We need $2-3mill to get the ground up to scratch so it can handle 100+ games and another $10-15mill to build proper stands, restore the existing one, build a new home for the BFNL which includes a function centre etc etc and so on. We need all the help we can get.

and of course in 2010 we readers expect todays news today. The Border Mail faces the same newspaper challenges as the Advertiser, but provides a much more timely coverage of local football. The message to the guys at the Addy is 'lift your game'.

Looking at the footy itself I think this round of Bendigo football will be the most interesting one for the season. There is a lot at stake for every team and for once there are no foregone conclusions - when was the last time we could say that?

I leave the detailed discussion to the good Doc, (no one does it better), but make the following observations.

Strath and Gisborne have been impressive in recent weeks. A win by Gisborne over Flat may not open the door to the finals, but could unlock it. Last year Gisborne got the wobbles up in the later half of the season and the wheels came right off in the finals. I think they were a distracted football club. This year all that is behind them and unlike 2009 they are actually improving as the year goes on. Flat are at the crossroads as a football club. A win will mean a lot to their supporters, a loss will really hurt them.

Strath v Eaglehawk is also a big deal in the ego stakes. If Eaglehawk drop this one I don't think they will be able to say they have improved on last year despite all the hype about recruiting. They just have to win. From Strath's point of view a win will really put this club on the map and who knows what they could do with seven rounds to go.

Kyneton v Castlemaine is going to see two desperate football teams take the field. A win will give their respective committee, sponsors & supporters a much needed lift. The loser will be devastated. This is going to be one very serious game of football. If you have any interest in either of these clubs get to the game, support your club and let the players enjoy a big crowd.

Maryborough v Sandhurst sees the final credentials of these teams being put under a blow torch. Again no one will want to lose this game. Last time Sandhurst played like a steam train then came home like the XPT but it was too late. When Maryborough are good they are really good, but they do toss in some shockers. The loser of this game will probably make the finals, but they will not be seen as a serious threat to the top three.

South v Square gives South a chance to wipe the slate clean from the opening round disaster. If South win/are competitive against Square they are back in business as a premiership threat. I think Square sense another mauling of South would rip their guts out. It is going to be a very interesting match and possibly a grandfinal preview.

BFL average winning margins.

Seniors Reserves U18
R1 50 30 86
R2 59 84 47
R3 69 74 65
R4 60 72 51
R5 103 73 81
R6 45 67 36
R7 41 46 95
R8 49 75 66
R9 103 78 64
R10 98 68 87

After 10 rounds average winning margin seniors 68 points, reserves 67 points and U18 68 points.

And all concerns in the BFL seem to be about the QEO playing surface. I think there is a bigger issue relating to an uneven competion.

I'm going to have to disagree, particularly about the significant part.

I understand that some revenue is derived from the advertising on their website but as I said, until paywalls are introduced the $ are made through selling papers.

I refer you to some of TTG's posting on here earlier this year...

then those wanting to see teams will just get on website instead of getting paper. not good business

Let me come at this from another direction then.

The Border Mail gives a brief summary of Ovens & Murray matches - details anyone injured, reported etc, then states a full summary of the match will be in Monday's Border Mail. It is actually an invitation to buy Mondays paper to find out more after you have been a outline of what has happened.

Ban for life I also totally agree with your comments.

Doc’s Game Previews and Tips for Round 11

South Bendigo v Square - 24
At the start of the year, I actually tipped South to win this one but ended up with egg on my face as Square stormed to an easy 86 point win. I think South have improved out of sight since that day with Strange, Hardinge, Leech & co coming into the side and Stroobants providing a lively target up forward. The problem is in Rd 1, Square were also missing Simon Rosa, Chris Carter and Nathan Bell. The gap between Square and “the rest” has seemed to get wider. For the sake of interest in the 2010 finals series, I hope South at least put up a great fight. An important note here: the closest anyone has got to Square this year is Sandhurst, who were up at 3 qtr time only to lose by 30 points…. Just keep that in mind for a few weeks time. Speaking of Weeks… 12 goals to the ton? I think not this week as the pressure will be there from South’s defence. Which means all you Dog supporters better start packing a picnic basket for Castlemaine next week… and practice a few “fence jumps and 50m sprints… Three sessions of 4 sets of 10 should give you a good chance to be the first supporter to congratulate the big fella after he kicks it!

Strathfieldsaye v E/hawk - 46
Another tip I got horribly wrong in Rd 1. The Burra flogged them by 110pts. I love Derrick Filo’s attitude. “If you want a job done properly, you gotta do it yourself” The grand old man of Bendigo football proved this by coming out of retirement Dame Nellie Melba style and chipping in with 4 goals last week… AND with a pack of Winnie Blues stuffed in his socks. At 42(?) he’s showing what valuable leadership can do for a side. He has a few champions running around but they haven’t quite managed to perform as a champion team in 2010. Strathfieldsaye on the other hand have put in some serviceable performances since Round 1 and should better their results of 2009 which is great for the comp. On a bad note, Marc Millard decided this week that the Storm wasn’t for him after all and returned to Heathcote for a chance of another premiership. All the same, I think at Tannery Lane, this game will be closer than last time.

Kangaroo Flat v Gisborne – 12
Gisborne has put some really good performances together recently which may have the fair-weather bandwagon ticketholders like KA and BB posting again in the near future, especially if the Doggies can snag a win against the very bland and “vanilla” Kangaroo Flat. Other than Justin Maddern, there’s not much going on at Dower Park. I’m told by some within the club that there’s a bit of blame being pushed around between the coaching panel and the playing group. Hey, these things happen when your side is not going as well as expected, but as they say, loose lips sink ships. The S.S. Kangaroo Flat is sinking slowly, not at crisis point yet mind you, but sinking nonetheless. A win this week might help to bring the club and the playing group together, and keep their finals hopes alive.

Kyneton v C'maine - 16
Oh Jimmy where art thou? The Tigers just can’t seem to buy a trick. On top of Jimmy’s injury, they’ve lost a few blokes back to the big smoke. Catch 22 being that close to Melbourne I suppose. The Castlemaine boys may sense a possible victory here given the unrest at Tigerland and should provide an entertaining days play. Everyone bangs on about how the country clubs are struggling, so I would like to see 1,000 people through the gate. Maineman, load up the truck and bring your mates. Barfoldbob & all you other Kyneton people, it’s time to beg, borrow, steal abduct supporters to get to the game. Get out there now and start generating interest… email, text, phone anyone and everyone… hell, do a flyer drop from an aeroplane and offer a free beer on entry… anything!! Ahem, apologies… I digress… I think the Tigers should get up in what should be another close game.

M'borough v Sandhurst - 11
The Dragons have come into some good form, winning their last 3 games, albeit against bottom 5 sides. Their young talented list, which saw a heap of new faces come in at the start of the year, has finally started to gel together and work to Keiran Nihill’s game plan. In disappointing news, it seems Jimmy Cozens has done his shoulder again and will not return in 2010 as well as star forward Mark Fitzgerald and solid midfielder James Walsh who are battling to overcome chronic ankle injuries. On the plus side, Ben Duescher is having a stellar season and is the Dragon’s leading goal kicker while the midfield brigade of Coghlan, Coghlan, Holmes, Stagg, Bateson and Summerhayes are playing exceptionally well. On top of this, the Reserves sit undefeated after 10 games beating the next best side by about 7 goals so the depth at Hurst is amazing. This game was a corker in Round 1 with the Pies surviving a late-charging Sandhurst to hang on by 4 points. Since then, Fisher’s boys have had their troubles with injuries and lack of consistency. They are always hard to beat at home and I expect the small ground will present some troubles for the Dragons if it’s a wet day. Evenly matched sides which will produce an entertaining, high quality game.

will be loading up the sheep truck, doc ken, and taking some redesdale, barfold and mia mia folks to the game
they don't go on a regular basis but, hell, we need some support --- any support :D

jimmy c. was on the sidelines last week alongside pauly houston. prety good at barking orders to the troops was jimmy from all reports. not that the tiges did diddly squat. only 1 snag roll for the entire day.

maybe big jimmy will b back for the maine game. if so, the tiges to win.

other games: gizzy to beat flat even w/out lukie saundes/hurst to be too quick and slick for the borough/weeksy and square to beat south (carroll wont start on weeksy, maybe rees altho a touch 2 tall, perhaps nalder/eagleh to beat storm but robins is going 2 b out for a while

Paws of leather drop the game tomorrow can we call them Paws of Wooden Spoons? All the Ra Ra Ra at the start of the year has disappeared. With Condos on the move in 2011 things are looking smelly as the town they play football in.

Horrible day yesterday with only the under 18s getting up.

Unless we pinch an upset at the Camp it looks like we will go winless. Hard time indeed.

To the credit of everyone though we had a successful auction night last night and the atmosphere is as positive as it can be in the circumstances.

Just been a nightmare year with injuries and suspensions killing us.

Can't believe noone on here is talking about the South win on the weekend? Great for the comp, puts some interest back in there...

Gutsy win by the Dragons over at Maryborough, a game they had to win if nothing else but for their own confidence.

Tiger fans - what was the gate takings on Sat? Did you end up with a respectable crowd?... not that Tigers supporters show much respect at home games... boom boom. thank you, I'll be here all week :D

Probably cos they have no supporters. Good win by South. Celebrated like they had won the flag.

Off Topic. How can they run out of all hot food half way through the second quarter??? Geez i know they usually don't get anyone there to watch them but seriously its a top of the table clash and they have a reunion on. Buy a couple of extra pies. Not that i need them

Wasn't a great crowd I wouldn't have thought, but I must say having been out injured Saturday and spent my first trip to Kyneton on the sidelines it was bloody painful standing in the cold watching!

Huh!?!

Firstly, please define "not as many". I think you'll find there is still a very healthy pool.

Good effort Dr. Aside from the South upset of course, you've done remarkably well. Might have thought you'd be a bit more on the ball than suggesting "Hoofa" was gone for the season though. He returned on the weekend!

I know you hate Sunday football Maineman but I though last Saturday's round was the best for the season and a real opportunity to have a Sunday game. Every match played held interest and any one of them I think would have drawn a good Sunday crowd.

Jayden Hind leaving Maryborough to go and play with his little brother at M'borough Rovers in the MCDFL - what does anyone think of that?

Represented BFL this year in senior interleague, plus U/18's last year, and was having his break-out season despite recent injury niggles. Such a waste of talent, although I doubt Rovers will see it that way.

by far the biggest crowd the bfl will see this year

thanks Cuz. As for Hoofa, well... depends what mood he's in as to whether you believe him or not. Looks like I got sucked in again ;) Great to see him kick 4 in the magoos... Dragons coming good just in time for a testing couple of weeks

Must admit, I fell for the "he's quit for good" card as well. That's Hoofa I guess, good luck to him. Duescher out will be a big loss for S'hurst. He has been brilliant for them, and they need all they can get for the next fortnight.

Yes Duscher will be a big loss, but I think this gives Jono Coghlan in particular a chance to play in a position that really suits him and Jono is no mug.

I would also love to see a fit Hoofa back. Four goals in a very powerful reserves team is an important first step, but lets not kid ourselves - there is a long way to go.
