Cheap & gratuitous ... but very amusing!

Actually, having been to Kyneton this year I could honestly say I don't think I had seen a better surface in the comp. I can't vouch for the past couple of weeks though.

Can anyone tell me why the Bombers - having left for Cairns yesterday - would put an "interchange from" in today's paper, listing BFL players who clearly didn't make the trip? Is it just for encouragement?

I hope it is taken as amusing. Well done to the Tigers. It has been a long time so they should enjoy a win over Gissy.

Kynetons ground is still in great nic, pitty it wasn't like that for gisborne - they might have been able to swim to save themselves!!

Kings Army - you feeling ok???

Its a pitty predicting such huge wins over the smaller clubs -goes to show the BFL needs to help the small town even things up a little - might make things a little more competitive!! Fingers crossed it doesn't go that way, Dr Ken is normally pretty spot though and that will help continue the big averages that we are seeing and the problem that is being denyed!

Gissy are having a bad year and it is not easy but Kyneton have been down for a long time. I posted on the BalFL how tough it is for Sebas and the Marsh who like Kyneton have been down for a long time. Sure it is fun to wind up the supporters but end of the day for the league to be a great one the struggling teams need to improve. Financially Sebas and the Marsh and even Melton South would spend approx 70k on players. They are playing against teams like Redan and Sunba who pay over 150k. I would suggest that Square would also be up with Sunba and Kyneton around the Sebas, Marsh and South mark. Ten years ago the difference was maybe 10 -15k. Now it is 70K+ and good coaching and bringing your juniors through no longer make you competitive. The playing ground is so lop-sided that no way can the less financially clubs ever think about pushing for a flag.

Also the problem has a snow ball effect - players will not come to Kyneton, Sebas, Marsh, Melton South to play for $400 a game when other teams offer $800. Also players want to play in sucessful sides so even if an offer of around the $800 is on the table the player will pick the stronger club that will win games. Also supporters drop off - less gate and food takings - sponsors drop off as they want to be associated with successful teams.

I have been a huge push for a couple of divisions. At least if Kyneton played against Sebas, Marsh and South they are on a similar playing field off field. More wins, more support and when things turn a chance to push for Div 1. Something has to give as Kyneton and co I believe will be bottom for a long time. The president of Kyneton has a lot of admirer's and when he posts on here it is quality and you get how hard he and the club are working (I would guess harder than the majority of clubs) just to get a side on the park. I think the VCFL need to become more invloved and actually go and spend some time at the Kynetons, Sebas and co and see what they actually go through. Clubs are going to go under or merge if something does not happen. I have joked about the Tigers to the RDFL but it maybe a good option. If Riddell are now paying the more than Melton South then something is wrong with the BenFL and BalFl.

I worked at the Richmond Football Club in the early 90's when they had 2,500 members and had to rattle tins on the weekend to "save our skins" - maybe I should dig them out and send them up the Calder.

You are just so right KA - really well done!

As well as giving teams like Kyneton, Castlemaine, Sebastapol & Melton South a chance to get their head above water, we would also see the likes of Square and Redan play off against one another in Division 1. Us punters would get to see two much more even competitions and Division 1 would be pretty good stuff.

Travel is used as the reason not to have two divisions, but if you look at the distances between most of the clubs even that does not stand up to close scrutiny.

Hopefully sometime in the future the Bendigo Board will:

1. accept that there is more to Bendigo football than just Golden Square, South Bendigo & Eaglehawk,

2. sit down with the likes of Castlemaine, Kyneton & Maryborough and at least discuss this concept with them.

I invite other to make contributions to this issue. You do not have to agree with KA & myself, but if you don't you should advise how struggling country clubs in the Bendigo & Ballarat leagues are going to compete against city clubs offering much more money to players (existing and recruits).

Some good comments there guys. I would personally would like to see a points system introduced as other leagues implemented. This would not only reward clubs for looking after and retaining their juniors but would give a more even playing field with a more even competition. Its the only way to keep these big spenders honest.

Central Murray league has had the points system in for a few years now and that league is proof the points system does not deter clubs from spending well over $100grand.
In theory its a good idea but logically it doesnt work.

Unfortunately it usually takes a club to fold until the league realise something is wrong because League boss's dont have any effective plans in place to help struggling clubs or any league future direction.
The league just hope clubs save themselves and miracle sponsors appear from every where willing to pump surplus cash into a club.

A two division league is the answer and needs to happen sooner rather than later.

KA, atleast Kyneton a getting a crowd now at their home games!

A great article on Grant Weeks in the age today. Well worth a read. A good game this week for the VCFL side and will be a chance to be drafted. Good publicity for the BenFL. Good players in lower leagues such as the RDFL may look to playing at the higher level to be more of a chance to get drafted. Aaron James has kicked 100 goals also but you will not see any articles in any major papers. Lets hope for Weeks sake he can turn it on this week - most fullbacks in the league would be happy to see him drafted!

saw the age article in the hard copy ka
the online version misses out on the stats .... weeka's goals round by round altho u can get the overall leading goalkickers in the vcfl from countryfootyscores.com
had forgotten he was a pioneer way back in 2005

onto the tiges i rekon after a reasonable showing v the hurst, kynton might have one more win left in them over the final, 4 rounds. maybe at home rd. 18 v maryborough

I think Condos has been equally impressive for Kyneton. How old is he?

He was the number one selection in the 2003 Rookie Draft ahead of Davey, Foley and Carrots. He played in the Wizard Cup against Richmond in 2004, but didn't play another game.

When Eade arrived at the end of 2004, he wanted to keep Condos on the list. Having not yet coached a game, he didn't really have much say on the matter - Condos was delisted in a flash. Jim's father approached the powers at AFL HQ to complain that Condos wasn't given a fair chance, and that's why they changed the rule so that a player must spend a minimum of two years on an AFL list. The club has no say in it now.

As for him being redrafted, no chance. He's 27 and not playing in a good enough league. He was a handy player at Werribee, but nothing special at that level.

Thanks X box. With the form of the big J Pods and a compromised draft 1 more year in the VFL may have opened the door for him.

Can someone please inform me the real reason why the BFL no longer use the house located at the QEO.

I have heard that they were evicted because they couldn't pay their rent.

I highly doubt that. It did get a grant from government for an upgrade as it was in a pretty ordinary state last time I set foot in there...Maybe if they are out, work is about to commence..

So you don't know Hoops33.

The goverment grant is for external work, the Bendigo cricket association remains there and their rent has increased as a result of the Bendigo Football League leaving.

Listening to Steve Oliver on the radio Sat morning, he said they moved out b/c of the external works and better facilities at Dudley House. Might be a smoke'n'mirror statement... he's an aspiring pollie after all... guess time will tell

I wasn't aware of this. Will give up football admin to become a politician?
He has all the attributes of a good politician - talks about how good his administration is and delivers absolutely nothing.

A duck taking to water would have a far more difficult task.

And currently being paid by the football public and using our resources such as phone, office and car so he can become a politician.

Will be interesting to see the finals price increase to cover these expenses.
